STEVE HOUSEHouse describes himself today as an alpinist, speaker, mountain guide, author and coach. He tries to integrate all these different aspects together based on a philosophy of awareness and experience.

Hehasclimbedtoughandpunishingbigwallsonsomeverybigmountainsinfarflungcorners of the world. They include what he considers his toughest climb yet, Nanga Parbat (8,125m)wherehemadethedifficultfirstascentuptheCentralPillaroftheRupalFaceofNanga Parbat in 2005 with friend and fellow climber Vince Anderson.

After a bad accident in Canada, House has found Alpine Mentors which helps

aspiring alpinists prepare for tough and demanding big wall climbing over a two-year programme.

The idea behind Alpine Mentors, a two-year-climbing resource, is about learning skills, but alsoaboutrealizingthatit’snotjuststrengthbutconfidence, bornoutfromexperienceandwisdom, thatiscrucialtosucceedingondifficultclimbs.

He’s written a well-received book called “Training for the New Alpinism: A Manual for the Climber as Athlete” which he believes has started an important new conversation about the need for a balanced life which takes stock of both the personal, spiritual and the physical quest.

On Saturday December 27th, 2014 Markus Pucher free-soloed the Via dei Ragni on the west face of Cerro Torre for the second time. He had free-soloed this route back in early 2013, when he blazed up it in a mere 3:15hs. What was unique about his last ascent is that it was carried out during a raging storm. No other ascent was done that day in the entire massif. Most climbers stayed safely inside the warmth of their hostels.Extract from an article by Rolando Garibotti on pataclimb.comHe is very very good, I think he’s the alpinist that has made the greatest impression on me during my whole life! He has a very strong will and head and reminds me of the greatest alpinists the world has seen.”Rolando Garibotti

Grivel started to make harnesses in the early ‘80s of the past century. Grivel uses now for its harnesses the Web-Core manufacturing process. A broad, yet thin and light piece of webbing which is laser cut to match the harness’ shape and is laminated - at high temperatures - to both the interior and exterior of the harness. This webbing, which is the same size as the comfort parts, assures optimal pressure distribution without any compression zones where the body is in contact with the harness. There are numerous benefitstothisinnovation:itallowsforthinner, compactandlighterweight harnesses whilst increasing comfort.

NickademusHollonplaced2ndatthisyear’sTordesGeantsin76hrsand29min’sandwasthefirstevernon-Europeantomakeitthepodiumintherace’sfiveyearhistory.Belowheofferssomeofhismost valuable tips in terms of training, racing and recovery from the 330km journey. 1.Knowwhatyouaregettinginto.TDGishailedastheworld’smostdifficultmountainultramarathonfor good reason. Training for the race is a six month commitment minimum and any athletes even considering the event should have a very strong mountain running background.

2. Keep training relevant. Although high volume and elevation gain are extremely important aspects of training, you should strive to mimic the terrain you’ll encounter at TDG. Nothing will prepare you better for the race than familiarizing yourself with unrelenting technical climbs and descents similar to what you’ll come across at the race.

3. Get to know the course. Whether that means getting out to race course in August and hiking the entire route or spending countless hours studying the maps and topography of the region. Learn and memorize the ups, downs, technical and non-technical portions of the course.

4. Practice using hiking poles. Use and get comfortable with hiking poles in the months leading up to TDG.Polesmakeyouruphillhikingeconomyfarmoreefficientandcansaveyourhips, kneesandmuscles from severe trauma if used properly on downhills.

5. Practice napping. During a 330km race you will encounter extreme sleep deprivation. Studying sleep cycles and analyzing your own sleep patterns can help immensely. Make a nap journal leading up to TDG. Does a 15 or 45 minutes work best for you? Know how much sleep your body needs to stay functional.

6. Smile and be thankful. Thank the race volunteers at the tops of the high mountain passes. Thank the medical staff at the life bases. Thank the volunteers and fans lining the course. It’s a beautiful course, full of beautiful people-smile and enjoy it.

7. Run your own race. Nothing is more important than running your own race. Don’t worry about what others are doing, who is passing you or what position you are in. Race your own race, track your ownprogressanddefineyourownlimitations.

8. Don’t use bad words. I mean it. Not a single negative word. What you say becomes what you think and what you think becomes your reality. Keep your vocabulary positive and the lows of your race will be short lived.

9. Honor your body. Your body will be wrecked after running TDG. Take care of it. Drink lots of liquids. Takeanti-inflammatories.Avoidalcoholandsalt.Respectandthankyourbodybyeatingwell,restingand staying hydrated.

10. Beware of post-race depression. TDG is a tremendous life accomplishment. And slipping back into normal life can be tough. Surround yourself with friends and family and remember that there is more to life than just running! Use this time to discover an old passion you may have cast aside in the months leading up to the race.

IN 1818 THE GRIVEL FAMILY OF BLACKSMITHS STARTED TO TRANSFORM THEIR PRODUCTION OF AGRICUL-TURAL TOOLS TO SATISFY THE RATHER PECULIAR DEMANDS OF A NEW BREED OF WEALTHY TOURISTS WHO, FOR UNFATH-OMABLE REASONS, WANTED TO CLIMB THE MOUNTAINS!

THE ENGLISH ENGINEER OSCAR ECKENSTEIN

WAS RECEIVED WITH SIMILAR SKEPTICISM WHEN IN 1909 HE ASKED HENRY GRIVEL TO MANUFACTURE THE FIRST MODERN GRIVEL CRAMPONS.

IN 1929, HENRY’S SON LAURENT MADE THE BRILLIANT INVEN-TION OF THE TWO FRONT POINTS, ALLOWING CLIMBERS TO STAND FACE ON WHILST ATTACKING THE STEEP ICE AND SNOW GRADIENTS. THIS INNOVATION WAS THE KEY TO THE CONQUEST OF THE LAST UNSOLVED ROUTE OF THE ALPS: THE NORTH OF THE EIGER, 21-24TH JULY, 1938.

IN 1936, IN COLLABORATION FOR THE FIRST TIME WITH THE COGNE STEELWORKS, AMATO GRIVEL, LAURENT’S YOUNGER BROTHER, USING THE CHROMOLLY ALLOY (NICKEL-CHROME-MO-LYBDENUM), CREATED A REALLY STRONG GRIVEL CRAMPON, THINNER AND THEREFORE LIGHTER.

IN 1982 A NEW MANAGEMENT LED BY GIOACHINO GOBBI WAS CONVINCED THAT OVER A HUNDRED YEARS OF TRADI-TION, THE BRAND NAME AND THE COMPANY’S LOCATION WERE A RECIPE FOR FUTURE SUCCESS.

1996 THE MACHINE: THE GRIVEL ICE AXE THAT REVOLUTION-IZED THE DESIGN OF TECHNICAL TOOLS. FROM NOW ON THIS WAS THE SHAPE THAT ALL MANUFACTURERS WOULD USE.

IN 2003 GRIVEL CRAM-PONS RESOLVE THE PROBLEM OF SNOW BUILD UP UNDER CRAM-PONS WITH THE FIRST PRO-ACTIVE ANTI-BALLING PLATE.

IN MAY 2009 THE COMPANY OPENED A NEW PRODUCTION UNIT IN A MUCH BIGGER SPACE, ALLOWING TO MANAGE DIFFERENT LINES OF PRODUCTION, TO AUGMENT FLEXIBILITY RESPONDING TO DAILY NEW

DEMANDS FROM AROUND THE WORLD, AND WIDEN THE RANGE OF PRODUCTS AND MAINTAIN AN AVANT-GARDE POSITION IN THE MARKETPLACE. SINCE 2010 THE NEW LOCATION HAS ALLOWED US TO SWITCH TO

A TOTAL SOLAR ENERGY FUELED PRODUCTION, CLEANER AND MORE ECOFRIENDLY. EVERY YEAR THEY SAVE 1,173 BARRELS OF OIL!
