The year of 2012 was a successful one for the Greater Reading community and the Greater Reading Economic Partnership (GREP). Not only did the organization celebrate ten years, but we are able to celebrate eleven successful projects in 2012. These projects have generated almost 2,500+ jobs for the region, with a significant majority of those jobs being new to the area.

While GREP has continued to focus on working with existing Greater Reading companies, many of the larger projects over the last 12 months have involved companies that are new to the area due to Greater Reading’s strategic location, diverse workforce and lower cost of doing business.

In 2012 the Board of Directors determined that the organization should focus on three primary strategies and in 2013 we are staying the course.

• Increased organizational awareness to our internal stakeholders and business community

• Existing business growth and retention• Increased coordination and collaboration

with our economic development partners

I am pleased with the results that we have seen over the last year and while there is always work to be done, the GREP team—staff, Board of Directors, Investors and Supporters—are all committed to making Greater Reading be something greater.

Berks park 78 wins BesT of 2012 The 2012 land sales at Berks Park 78 recognized by the Mid Atlantic Real Estate Journal

The MAREJ Best of 2012 was a juried competition of submissions and nominations from their readership. Winners were selected based upon the size of the deal or project submitted. To qualify, projects or firms must be located in the Mid-Atlantic region, specifically the states of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Virginia and Maryland.

Under the leadership of BCIDA Executive Director Thomas McKeon, the $22,190,000 sale of two pad sites, totaling almost two-million square feet, at Berks Park 78 in Bethel Township, Pennsylvania was completed in 2012. The two sites will be home to two large distribution centers for national chains, Dollar General and PetSmart—both Fortune 500 companies.

Dollar General and PetSmart are investing over $150 million at Berks Park 78 and combined are expected to create over 1,100 jobs. Dollar General plans to construct a 900,000 square foot facility and PetSmart plans to construct an 870,000 square foot facility. Both distribution centers are expected to be completed in early 2014.

“We’re thrilled to win this award and could not have asked for stronger or more prominent companies to anchor Berks Park 78,” said Tom McKeon, BCIDA Executive Director. “The Dollar General and PetSmart commitments have proven what we’ve known all along. We are on the map as one of the best logistics locations in the Mid-Atlantic states.”

LoCaL CommuniTy CoLLeGe joins sTaTewide joB TraininG iniTiaTiveA statewide initiative will help provide critical training to displaced workers in PA

The program, JobTrakPA, will use fast and affordable retraining to help PA’s displaced workers regain employment in today’s high-demand industries. JobTrakPA was made possible by a $20 million Department of Labor Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College Career Training (TAACCCT) grant awarded to the colleges last fall.

“Pennsylvania employers tell us that they have jobs waiting for workers with career-specific skills in several high-growth industries,” said Dr. Alex Johnson, president of the Pennsylvania Commission for Community Colleges and president of the Community College of Allegheny County. “Community colleges are part of a nationwide effort to provide a new skill-set to our workforce that will create career pathways for qualified workers in the shortest possible time.”

Currently, there are 15,000 TAA-eligible workers in Pennsylvania. The colleges, along with Pennsylvania CareerLink, are coordinating efforts to reach those workers and connect them to JobTrakPA for retraining and re-employment.

Three high-growth, in-demand industries have been identified as priorities by the colleges. Training in these industries will be offered throughout the state, but will vary by regional needs:

• Advanced Manufacturing;• Energy Distribution, Production and Conservation; and• Healthcare Information Technology

Each of the industries is projected to grow substantially over the next few years.

Local Workforce Investment Boards project that there will be 4,800 job openings in advanced manufacturing in the coming years; in the industry of energy distribution, production and conservation over 32,000 job openings are expected by 2016, according to the Pennsylvania Green Jobs Survey Report; and in healthcare information technology, the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry estimates there will be more than 9,000 job openings by 2016.

In addition to offering training, the community colleges have hired dedicated staff to help ensure students are successful at completing their courses. Following completion, staff will provide job placement assistance. The community colleges have already developed relationships with local employers who are ready to hire students who complete JobTrakPA training.

Additional information about JobTrakPA can be found at www.JobTrakPA.com.
