DESCRIPTION

Text of GR.ENE.CO fact sheet

  • Promotion of environmental sustainability at the basin level

Promotion of renewable energy use and improvement of energy efficiency contributing to addressing, among other challenges, climate change

    Priority 2

    Measure 2.2

    Green Energy for Green Companies

    GR.ENE.CO

  • Project in briefThe problem of massive emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the burning of fossil fuels and related climatic impact have become major environmental, scientific and institutional issues worldwide. Long-term sustainability of the atmosphere requires a drastic decrease in CO2 emissions and an efficient energy strategy. Against growing energy consumption in the Mediterranean area, GR.ENE.CO project aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to improve energy efficiency by adopting renewable energy as main power source at farm level. This will be reached through the implementation of several forms of renewable energy - biofuel, biomass, solar, wind and hydro power - in farms settled in the involved target areas: Sarcidano and Barbagia of Seulo (Italy), South Lebanon, Al Iskandanyah and Al Buhayrah territories (Egypt).

Beneficiary LAG Sarcidano and Barbagia of Seulo (Italy, Sardegna)

Partnership1. University of Alexandria (Egypt, Al Iskandanyah) 2. Beirut Arab University (Lebanon) 3. Ministry of Agriculture (Lebanon) 4. Italian-Arab Chamber of Commerce (Italy, Lazio) 5. Chamber of Commerce of Nuoro (Italy, Sardegna) 6. Tecnomarche scarl - Scientific and Technology Park of Marche Region (Italy, Marche) 7. ITABIA - Italian Biomass Association (Italy, Lazio) 8. IPSAR - Vocational School for agricultural and rural development (Italy, Sardegna) 9. Sardinian Forest Institute (Italy, Sardegna)

Specific objectiveTo spread the use of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) for agricultural and livestock activities contributing to energy self-sufficiency at farm level

  • Expected results Energy consumption from non-RES sources per target local farm reduced of at least 30% Standardized protocol defined for green crop production using Renewable Energy Sources Energy optimization indicators defined for around 200 farms/SMEs Good practices in Renewable Energy Sources and financial instruments for supporting development of RES projects at farm level identified and promoted Increased target groups and final beneficiaries knowledge and awareness about RES and energy saving Renewable Energy Sources based power plants deployed in nine farms located in Lebanon, Egypt and Italy

Main activities Data collection and mapping of local farms with focus on their energy requirements Establishment of a GR.ENE.CO network to promote the use of renewable energies and improvement of energy efficiency at farm level Organization of a Best Green Farm Contest and of Green Behavior seminars dedicated to young students Design of an energy efficiency database as well as guidelines featuring good practices for energy saving in agricultural activities Creation of three financial support tools Implementation of three pilot RES projects at farm level per country involved

Target groups Local farms High schools Public administrations

    Final beneficiaries Local populations SMEs
