American Visions

San Juan Symphony2017-18

Greetings from our Music Director:

Welcome to the San Juan Symphony! And thank you all for the warm welcome into the Four Corners community. Don’t know if you’ve heard, but the San Juan Symphony has a new sound. Our musicians have more passion and energy than ever before, and we are delivering one incredible performance after another. But our work has just begun: we want to engage a broader community, and you can help spread the word about Season 32. Invite your friends and family, because every night at the Symphony is ours to share. “American Visions” will explore unique takes on the American experience all season long. From West Side Story to Requiem for Eagles, the voices of American composers weave together our shared musical heritage. Added to the mix, we have an entire evening devoted to Latin American and Spanish-speaking composers, plus a generous portion of Classical and Romantic masterworks. With brilliant guest soloists, familiar faces in the orchestra, and the powerful sound of an enormous community choir, it is going to be a fantastic season with something for everybody to enjoy.

Thomas HeuserSara M. Novenson’s work has been exhibited and

published worldwide for over 30 years. Her variedbody of work includes Landscapes of the Soul and Women

of the Bible. A series of her landscapes are bordered with Hebrew Psalms. She has also written and published a book

of her Women of the Bible Series. Her studio and gallery are located on Canyon Road in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Sara’s greatest love and joy is to paint onsite in the New Mexico landscape. “As I paint I feel infused with the beauty

and sacredness of the landscape, making each of my paintings a form of prayer.”

Latin Nights Things get fired up in February with “Latin Nights,” a sizzling evening of flashy showpieces by Spanish and Latin American composers. The program features music from The Three Cornered Hat by Manuel de Falla, plus exotic dances like the zarzuela, fandango, huapango, and more! Franklin Cohen, former Principal Clarinet of the Cleveland Orchestra, joins the Symphony for a lyrical Clarinet Concerto by Mexican composer Oscar Navarro.

Leonard Bernstein Centennial From Broadway to the silver screen and everywhere in-between, Leonard Bernstein personifies the ideal American musician. A visionary composer, conductor, and educator, Bernstein brought classical music into the American household and used performance as a response to political turmoil in the 20th century. His life and works will be center stage with the San Juan Symphony as we celebrate his centenary year, featuring movie music from On The Waterfront and familiar favorites from Candide and West Side Story.

Pastoral Reverence Celebrating composer David Lingle’s impact on our local choral community, the San Juan Symphony is proud to present Requiem for Eagles as part of a continuing collaboration between the Durango Choral Society and Telluride Choral Society. The soaring harmonies and gentle themes of Lingle’s Mass are paired with other reverential offerings, including Beethoven’s beloved “Pastoral” Symphony and Felix Mendelssohn’s first-hand rendering of Fingal’s Cave in the Scottish Hebrides Islands.

From the New World Czech composer Antonín Dvořák views America through the lens of the 19th century and creates a vivid Symphony “From the New World”. After a thrilling operatic overture, Rochelle Mann, Principal Flute of the San Juan Symphony, delivers a lyrical Serenade by American composer Howard Hansen. Then local student musicians join the Symphony for a Side-by-Side performance of The Moldau, raging over rapids and thundering through Smetana’s epic symphonic poem.

The State Street Ballet from Santa Barbara returns for holiday performances of Tchaikovsky’s beloved Nutcracker Ballet.
