GREENSFELDERGIVES BACKCommunity Service, Pro Bono & Charitable Giving Annual Report

Page 2: GREENSFELDER GIVES BACK

A s President and CEO of Greensfelder, I reflect back on 2020 and am proud of how our firm persevered despite the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. The

pandemic caught the world by surprise, but Greensfelder embraced the challenge and sought out meaningful ways to continue to provide support to those in need. Our firm has a history and a culture of giving back at every level of the organization, and we were able to carry on that tradition as Greensfelder celebrated its 125th anniversary. It is a testament to our collective commitment to one another and the well-being of others that we did not allow the circumstances of the pandemic to unduly disrupt our standards of service to each other, our clients, or our community.

I am pleased to share with you via this annual report how the firm continued our pro bono legal assistance, community service and financial contributions in 2020, and I am excited to preview the future community initiatives of the firm for 2021.

In 2021, we plan to continue our commitment to the #GreensfelderGivesBack initiative by:

• Increasing employee involvement: In 2021, the firm will challenge even more employees to participate in service activities and giving back to our communities. Whether that be through service on non-profit boards or in other leadership capacities, or exploring more ways to incentivize community service, we want to build on the spirit of giving that is already strong in our organization.

• Continuing our support for equity and social justice: In 2020, the firm selected equity as a focal point of our charitable giving and community service initiatives. Greensfelder will continue its support for social justice by targeting efforts that serve and uplift historically marginalized groups and those that have a focus on equity, justice and fairness for all.

• Supporting COVID-19 relief efforts: As the pandemic endures and our communities continue to grapple with the economic and health care ramifications, we at Greensfelder feel strongly compelled to help. While we acknowledge that the scope of the COVID recovery is significant and best coordinated at the state and federal levels, we believe this is a prime opportunity to work with our clients and community partners to provide more immediate relief where we live and work.

I am proud of our commitment to the cities where we live, work, and play, and I look forward to expanding our partnership with clients and community partners to make a greater impact in the years ahead.

Sincerely,

Kevin T. McLaughlinGreensfelder, Hemker & Gale, P.C.

PRO BONO LEGAL SERVICES

Greensfelder attorneys provide a signifi cant amount of top-notch legal work at no charge to organizations in need in our communities through our Pro Bono program. Whether it is serving as part of Missouri’s Public Defender program or providing legal services and advice to local non-profi ts, our attorneys demonstrate their love for community with action. We support organizations including Legal Services of Eastern Missouri and Land of Lincoln Legal Aid that strive to improve access to justice.

VOLUNTEER SERVICE & FINANCIAL/IN KIND DONATIONS

Greensfelder attorneys and staff members give time and service to organizations that are near and dear to them and personally donate financially to charitable causes. In addition, Greensfelder is proud to donate to non-profits and charitable organizations that do important work in our communities, especially during the pandemic. A list of many of the organizations that received financial and volunteer support in 2020 can be found at the end of this report.

URBAN LEAGUE OF METROPOLITAN ST. LOUIS GIVEAWAY | JULY 2020

ST. LOUIS BUSINESS JOURNAL CORPORATE PHILANTHROPY LIST

In the St. Louis Business Journal’s Corporate Philanthropy List for 2020, Greensfelder was proud to have been ranked second in the mid-size company category, based on community donations and pro bono service. As a bonus, we were selected as the only law fi rm to be featured in a roundtable interview accompanying the list.

UNITED WAY GIVING CAMPAIGN

Greensfelder donated over $20,000 to the United Way as part of our annual United Way campaign through pledges, raffl es and contests. These dollars assist over 170 non-profi t programs and services in the St. Louis area.

URBAN LEAGUE: LEGAL COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTION

In July, Greensfelder was proud to join with the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis and our colleagues from across the St. Louis legal community to make a joint contribution to the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis. The St. Louis legal community jointly contributed more than $100,000 toward one of the Urban League’s major food and supply giveaway drives.

The Urban League’s weekend giveaways provided food and essentials to any family in need. Items donated include masks, gloves, sanitizer, soap, toilet paper and food items such as produce, bread, canned goods, etc. Greensfelder employees also volunteered as part of the program.

MOTION FOR KIDS

Motion for Kids, a program of the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis, provides an annual holiday party for up to 2,500 area children in foster care whose lives have been severely impacted by the criminal justice system.

Motion for Kids partners with local support organizations to identify the children invited to the holiday party. Those children are matched up with sponsors from the St. Louis legal community (lawyers, judges, paralegals, offi ce administrators, law students, legal secretaries and their families). Each sponsor is asked to purchase and wrap two gifts chosen from the child’s wish list. Gifts are distributed during the party, to which the children and their families are invited.

Greensfelder attorney Caroline Paillou has coordinated the Motion for Kids effort for the past fi ve years, and the fi rm was honored to have sponsored over 80 children in 2020.

FOOD OUTREACH COLLECTIONS

Food Outreach’s mission is to provide nutritional support and enhance the quality of life of men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS or cancer. Clients of Food Outreach live in 160 Missouri and Illinois ZIP codes and range in age from 5 to 88 years – many of whom live with multiple secondary illnesses in addition to their primary diagnosis.

Thanks to the Greensfelder employees who participated in our holiday Gifts of Gratitude program, we were able to supply almost 30 meal kits through Food Outreach. Greensfelder summer associates volunteer for Food Outreach for a day during their time at the fi rm as well.

TIM THORNTON DIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIP

Greensfelder created a new scholarship fund with Washington University School of Law to support diverse law students, in recognition of the fi rst anniversary of the passing of former fi rm President and CEO Tim Thornton.

Each year, a law student at Washington University in St. Louis who has demonstrated a commitment to diversity will be selected as the recipient. After awarding the initial $10,000 scholarship in the fall of 2020, Greensfelder will fund an endowment to allow for the continuation of the scholarship annually in alignment with the fi rm’s commitment to advancing diversity in the legal profession and creating opportunities for individuals in our communities.

CHICAGO COUNSEL FOR A CAUSE

We were proud to continue our support for the American Heart Association’s Counsel for a Cause initiative in Chicago. Because of the pandemic, this annual event bringing together support from the legal community shifted in 2020 to focus on helping at-risk populations stay healthy at home through the use of blood-pressure monitoring.

BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF SOUTHWESTERN ILLINOIS

Greensfelder is proud to have been a Big Defender Sponsor of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwestern Illinois’ fourth

Big Impact Bash, held virtually in 2020. BBBS recognized the fi rm’s support in a LinkedIn post that said: “Greensfelder has been an amazing friend to us and our community. Thank you for all you do. ”

ANNUAL HOLIDAY CARDS

Each year, the fi rm makes pledges to several charitable organizations as part of its holiday card program and provides information about each group to e-card recipients.

This year’s card featured:

• St. Louis Area Foodbank

• Chicago Food Depository

• Annie Malone Children and Family Services
