"As a yoga teacher and studio owner I'm committed toand excited about supporting Yoga Gives Back. Thepractice of yoga has changed my life and given me so much. It seems the veryleast we can do as a community is try to give something back to the country fromwhere it came. Sometimes it can feel like the problems of the world areinsurmountable. The fact is, a very small amount of money (what most peoplespend on a couple of yoga classes), can really change someone's life."

Lila French is generously donating 25% of salesfrom her great artwork currently exhibited atLiberation Yoga (La Brea and 1st) through August10th. Check out http://lilasfrench.com/liberation.

We are excited to welcome two new YGB teammembers: Naoko Doi and Patrick Gookin.

YGB explores new ways to support microfinance in India

Can micro financing reach the poorest in India? Can we reach the poorest in moredirect ways? We have been exploring answers to these questions. Here is oneorganization YGB has decided to support.

NISHTHA is a non-governmentalorganization that has been working for more than 35 years in Kolkotta, WestBengal. NISHTHA, working in over 250villages, empowers impoverished womenand girls by employing a number of programs to improve their social andeconomic conditions. This region, likemany in rural India, suffers from illiteracy, child marriage, poverty and malnutrition, with most eo le livin on less that $2 a

day. Most of the adult women have notbeen to school. With neither training nor money, women cannot purchase even the essentials. Conflicts within the family anddiminished self worth are a result. This is why NISHTHA started a project called "Self Helf Group", where abusive situations can be addressed and women are madeaware of their rights.

As a part of its SHG effort, NISHTHA started micro credit groups in 56 villages, three

years ago. So far, 112 groups have been formed and are working well. This hasbeen a very positive experience in that there has not been a single defaulter amongst the loan borrowers.

To support NISHTHA's works, YGB is thrilled to collaborate with Barbara Piner, founder of  ASTI(American Service to India), who has been assisting the poorest inIndia since 1981. YGB will send portions of our funds directly to NISHTHA, and wewill continue to explore more ways to get directly involved. We are also planning tovisit them this fall and report back to the YGB community.
