Congratulations to the 2012 LeadershipUnion Grove Class who received theirgraduation certificates on Wednesday,May 9 at The Bixby-Hansen AmericanLegion.

The class met for the first time in Augustat a session. Since thatday, they have spent many hourstogether - listening to numerousspeakers, learning how to build betterwork and personal relationships,exploring the community as well aslearning the history of Union Grove andgiving back to the community through ateam project. This year’s class projectwas to work with area businesses. Theydistributed educational informationabout the importance of having afacebook page and how to start one. Ifyou would like the information, pleasecontact Betsy Weese at 262-878-4606and she will forward the information toyou.

LUG meets from 8:00 am - 4:00 pm onthe second Wednesday of the monthfrom October to May. Monthly sessiontopics are: Health & Human Services,Law Enforcement & Justice, Media andEducation, Business & EconomicDevelopment, Government and ProblemSolving, Agricultural Day, Volunteerism &

Trusteeship, and Recreation & Quality ofLife. We would like to thank Ruth Bose,Carolyn Preston and Jill Gillmore whoare going to be stepping down from theadvisory board this year. We also thankMichele McGarry for her many years ofservice as Chairman. Their contributionsare deeply appreciated and they will bemissed. Michele will be staying on theadvisory board as Nancy Suhr and BarbFischer-Galley will be co-chairing.

We would like to thank the Village ofUnion Grove for providing theCommunity Room, Dousman Transportfor providing a bus for many outings andDr. Kinkade for monthly training.

The parade will be coming up before we knowit. We have approximately 35 entries who havesent in their forms so far. If you haven’t sentyours in, now is a good time to do so. Deadlineis coming quickly - June 15.

We want to thank those of you who have madea monetary contribution to our parade. The lastfew years have been financially hard on manyarea families and businesses. In turn, themoney left over to run this years’ parade is very

low as well as this years’ donations. We do wish to continue to invite entertaininggroups to enhance our parade. You can help us by considering to make a donation.All donations are greatly appreciated and used to pay for bands, ribbons, flags andadvertising.

There will be no chamber lunchmeetings held in the summer thisyear. Our next meeting is scheduledfor the evening of Wednesday, August29. Jaime Vollmer, author of“Schools Cannot Do It Alone” will beour guest speaker. Look for moreinformation as the date gets closer.

The Racine County Fair brings thousandsof area residents right to our back yard.In an effort to make the most of thisopportunity the Chamber of Commercewould like to offer you affordableadvertising. We have our Shift Chairpersons for this years corn roast. You may be contacted by one of them in thenear future to join them for 6 hours of working in the corn roast building for our biggest fundraiser ofthe year. While there are a lot of jobs to be done, it is a fun day of helping out and getting to knowfellow chamber members outside of the work environment. If you would like to volunteer for a shift,feel free to contact me at [email protected] and let me know what day and time you are available.

Shifts are available July 25 - 29 from 10:30 am - 4:30 pm & 4:30 - 10:30 pm

People are needed on each shift to: Roast corn, take orders, fill orders, grill brats and hot dogs, fillsalt/ketchup/napkin containers and much more. There is something for everyone.

New boardmember, DonMeredith, isagain on theChamber board.His name isactually acombination ofhis father’sparent’s two

family names: Donald and Meredith.The Donald and Meredith familiesboth settled in the Union Grove areain the mid-1800’s about the sametime as Wisconsin was becoming astate and our country was at peacejust prior to the Civil War. With theexception of several short active dutyperiods while serving in the WisconsinNational Guard and for a few years

out of college, Don has also spentpretty much most of his life in theUnion Grove area. He is a graduateof Union Grove High School andUW-Whitewater with a bachelor ofbusiness administration in finance.After working in the insuranceindustry for a few years out of collegeand managing a corporate insuranceoffice in Madison, Don went to workat Meredith’s Culligan Water with a 5year plan of learning the businessand purchasing the franchise fromhis father.

In 1985, Don completed thepurchase of Meredith’s CulliganWater and Bill, his father,“temporarily” retired. Since that time,Meredith’s Culligan has grown and

expanded, which allowed forpurchase of Union Grove TIF districtland and a building that is now theircurrent facility on 13th Avenue. Thebusiness employs about a dozen full-time people and serves most ofRacine, Kenosha and Milwaukeecounties from this “hometown” UnionGrove property. Meredith’s Culliganprovides water treatment toresidences, commercial, industrialand technology companies in thatservice area.

Don considers himself very fortunateto have both grown up in a smallercommunity and had the opportunityto raise a family in a placethat is safe and friendly.

The Family Dentists participates innumerous chamber and communityevents. This year, Dr. Ulloaspearheaded "Save a Tooth"program, in an effort to betterprepare teachers, firemen andcaregivers for the possibility of aknocked out tooth. Dr. Ulloa visitedfourteen local schools, firedepartments, and day care centersand donated kits which contain amedium that a displaced tooth can be

placed in to maintain viability until itcan be re-implanted.

Also this year, Tammy Wisniewski andMichelle Petersen visited six localelementary schools and gavedemonstrations on how to brush andfloss teeth. Approximately 250 localstudents learned about theimportance of good dental hygieneand healthy food choices inmaintaining good oral health. Thestudents also received kits with toothbrushes and other goodies. This wasthe 19th consecutive year that TheFamily Dentists has givenpresentations to local schools.

Dr. Ulloa also participates in theDonated Dental program for qualifiedapplicants and the GKAS (Give Kids aSmile) donated dental program heldevery first Friday in February.

The Family Dentists has been a SilverSponsor since 2004.

Comedian Jeffrey Danley will be at R&R Club onSatruday, June 2nd. Show starts at 9 pm on the Patio.Advance tickets are available for only $5. Cost will be $7at the door. The Southeastern Wisconsin Regional PlanningCommission (SEWRPC) is conducting a comprehensivetravel survey for the seven-county southeastern WisconsinRegion in 2011 and 2012. The travel survey informationis vital to the proper planning of the highway and transitsystems in southeastern Wisconsin.

A part of that overall survey effort will be a commercialtruck travel survey. To conduct this survey, a randomsample of approximately 24,000 commerciallyowned/operated trucks will be drawn from vehiclesregistered in the seven-county Southeastern WisconsinRegion. If your vehicle was selected, you will be receivinga survey packet in the mail in early-June.The truck travelsurvey information provided to SEWRPC will be used inaggregate for statistical purposes only and individualresponses will be kept completely confidential.

By participating in the commercial truck travel survey, truckoperators will be performing a valuable service by assistingin the planning of the Region’s future transportation systemand assuring that their travel will be considered in themajor reevaluation and update of the RegionalTransportation Plan which is now being initiated.
