Please always remember to honor those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Your team of volunteer leads have been busy getting us ready for summer. Bobby – getting the pool ready, Rog- er – sprucing up the tennis and pickleball courts, Eric – our park, FC Garden Club – the memorial and butterfly gardens, Andrew – new kayak storage rack and the ma- rina, Matt – the lake drainage pipes and duckweed treat- ment, to name a few. We owe them all a big thank you! We await guidance that will allow us to open the play- ground, the pool and the clubhouse. We expect that this will be a step at a timewith some restrictions. Our future picnics and events of more than 10 people are on hold until permitted by government guidance. But, our lake, marina, beach, tennis courts and other public areas are wide open. We are so very fortunate to have these public areas. If you have time, take a walk and enjoy all that our beautiful neighborhood has to offer! We strongly encourage everyone to follow the guidance our government and medical leadership has provided to keep us all safe, and suggest that everyone adhere to the guidance on masks and social distancing. Together we can stay safe! Be on the lookout for updates throughout June – we will do our best to communicate regularly through Face- book, emails and the newsletter. If you have any ques- tions, feedback or concerns you can email me at [email protected]. Please continue to do what you can to keep you and your family safe. To all Residents of Greater First Colony, Although we’re very sorry we couldn’t be together for our usual Memorial Day picnic and cookout, I hope everyone had a fun and safe Memorial Day weekend. Please always remember to honor those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Your team of volunteer leads have been busy getting us ready for summer. President’s Corner Board Meeting Minutes

The May 14, 2020 Board meeting was called to order by President Terry Walker at 7:08 pm. The meeting was held via dial in or video link due to the Corona Virus rules and safety precautions. Other board members pre-sent were: Brian Day (VP), Brian O’Day (Treasurer), Denise Thomas (secretary), Meagan Schultz (Business Manager), members-at-large Kathy Colburn, Becky Loving, Liz Robbins, and Troy Tuckey. Bobby Jankovic (Pool Chair & Past President), Patricia Burke (Welcoming Committee Chair), Roger Hunt (Tennis Chair), Eric Mueller (Park Chair), Andrew Mayfield (Marina Chair) , Laurel Henshaw, (Swim Team Chair), and Matt Wawersik (Lake Chair) were also present. Guest Fran Geisler was present to respond to questions regarding the spillway repair. Minutes of the previous board meeting held April 16, 2020 were approved. Brian O’Day presented the GFCACA budget perfor-mance summary. worn by attendants inside snack shack; reduced mem-bership fees and opened later on weekend nights; con-cession limited to prepackage items with no food that has to be prepared. Bobby will create a survey to try and determine interest. The pool staff is full, returnees are getting raises, entry level is minimum wage. A motion was made, seconded, and passed to open the pool when we can, enforce social distancing, and create a safe en-vironment for families to enjoy and to open for rental of lanes for lap swimming. Welcoming. Pat visited a couple of new families and has left messages for others. Appreciates any information on new arrivals. Tennis courts. Roger reports that the cracks still need to be repaired and that people have been playing pickle-ball. Clubhouse. The clubhouse remains closed through June 10. We are waiting for direction on what kind of re-quirements there will be for cleaning between uses. There was discussion on hiring a cleaning company, scheduling the work, and fees. Conversation was tabled until Terry could discuss with Marion (Clubhouse Chair). Park. Not much going on now. There is a significant amount to be done and the plan is to put together a list of specific tasks and find volunteers who can complete them. A note was made that the lawn maintenance crew is doing a great job. Marina. Andrew reported that a canoe and kayak stor-age rack has been built by a volunteer. There are eight storage spots. Rental will be around $85 per year. He will place a note in First Colony social media sites to advertise. If he gets more than eight requests he will have a lottery to determine who gets the spaces. He also reported that the sign on John Rolfe pointing to the ma-rina is gone. All slips are filled. He has been doing mi-nor repairs to the pier and dock along with some gate maintenance. There was a question on when the buoys would be put in and a clean up date scheduled. These will be done closer to Memorial Day. New Business: Swim Team - Laurel advised that they are still waiting on specific guidance and there are many questions. They are going forward as if there will be a season and team. It appears that 86% of families are returning and the ones that aren’t have swimmers that have aged out or moved. There is a June 1st deadline from VPSU to confirm teams and practice can start June 22. In person meets would likely not happen this summer. Looking at ways to have virtual and intra team competition. They do have coaches willing to work and within the safety guidelines. These guidelines include practice by age group only, 6-10 swimmers per practice session, one swimmer per lane, no extra people on the deck.

MORE TO FOLLOW

We send belated good wishes to Neal Robinson of Tim-ber Ridge, who recently had a hernia operation. I learned about it when I read his letter to the editor about his excellent care at the hospital. We sent a get-well card to Sue Hallady of Heritage Landing, who is recuperating from surgery. We sent our sympathy to Kelly Charles and her family on the passing of her mother. I remember meeting her on one of her visits here and learning we had a New Hampshire connection. I received the following thank you notes: Dear Neighbors, Thank you so very much for the beau-tiful flowers you sent after my Mother’s passing. She visited often from New Hampshire and joined us for many picnics at the park and beach. She really loved First Colony! The Spring of 2020 has been a difficult time for all of us. Your flowers really brightened up my day. How wonderful it is to live in such a caring com-munity. With Sincere Thanks, Kelly Charles and fami-ly. Dear GFCACA, Thank you for the lovely flower ar-rangement. Your thoughtfulness is much appreciated. Stay safe, stay well, and hopefully we can all get outside with one another soon. Best, Steve and Penny Haag. May 20th Gazette had the obituary for Joe Evans. Joe and Dean were very long and active residents of First Colony. We hated to see them move away some years ago. Ann Hunt, Sunshine Chair [email protected] 757-229-1384 I appreciate so much when neighbors inform me of sadness or sickness in our community. Please don’t as-sume that someone else will tell me. I would rather get 10 calls than none to alert me to sickness or any other adversity. We want those in pain to know that we care. It doesn’t take a minute to call or send me an email. Thanks to all those who keep me informed.

Flag Day, also called National Flag Day, in the United States, a day honouring the national flag, observed on June 14. The holiday commemorates the date in 1777 when the United States ap-proved the design for its first national flag.

The idea to set aside a day to honour the national flag came from sever-al sources. Bernard J. Cigrand, a Wisconsin schoolteacher, in 1885 urged his students to observe June 14 as “Flag Birthday.” He later wrote an essay published in a Chicago newspaper that urged Americans to proclaim this date as the day to celebrate the flag. In 1888 William T. Kerr of Pennsylvania founded the American Flag Day Association of Western Pennsylvania, an organization to which he dedicated his life. A lesser-known claim is that of George Morris of Connecticut, who is said to have organized the first formal celebration of the day in Hartford in 1861.

In 1916 Pres. Woodrow Wilson proclaimed June 14 as the official date for Flag Day, and in 1949 the U.S. Congress permanently established the date as National Flag Day. Although Flag Day is not an official fed-eral holiday, Pennsylvania celebrates the day as a state holiday. Each year the U.S. president delivers an address that proclaims the week of June 14 as National Flag Week, and all Americans are encouraged to fly U.S. flags during that week.
