A Message from our Spiritual Director:

During the 2004 film, The Passion of the Christ, a poignant conversation takes place between Jesus and his mother. Following the brutality of a Roman scourging, Jesus falls beneath the heavy cross he is forced by the Roman Guard to drag through the streets of Jerusalem. Witnessing the excruciating pain Jesus is made to endure, Mary runs and kneels alongside of her son. She says, “I’m here.” Jesus replies, “See, mother, I make all things new.” Jesus’ words reflect God’s words as spoken through the prophet, Isaiah: “Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness…” (Isaiah 43:19, ESV). As Christians, we believe that these words in Isaiah offer a foretaste to the crucifixion of Jesus. Both the Old and New Testaments witness to the belief that the death of Jesus marked the beginning of God’s new creation. Additionally, the cross has made possible both the justification and sanctification of those who place their faith in the person and grace of Christ. From the moment of our conversion, life is no longer the same. We become in the words of the Apostle Paul, new creatures. As you may know, life within the Greater Cincinnati Emmaus-Chrysalis Community is changing quickly. For many, Hyde Park United Methodist holds precious memories. Hyde Park is the location wherein you may have taken your pilgrim walk to Emmaus. The image of a beautiful sanctuary bathed in light brings about cherished memories. The thought of saying, “good bye,” to this sacred space is distressing. Yet, permit me to remind you that the God who blessed you with his presence at Hyde Park is the same God who will bless you in Greater Cincinnati’s new location at St. Paul Community. While certain places and moments embed themselves in our memories, it can become easy to get stuck looking in the rearview mirror and miss the amazing things God is doing directly in front of us. While nostalgia temporarily can warm our hearts, only the living Christ can move our hearts forward and use us for God’s primary purpose‒‒the transformation of the world. In the immortal words of Winnie-the-Pooh, “How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.” I am confident that each of you will carry with you treasured memories of the Emmaus Community’s soon-to-be former home. Strange as it may sound, we can be thankful that saying goodbye is so hard. However, we can be equally grateful that the God who welcomed us in the past is the same God who invites us to work with Him to build a glorious future. De Colores, David Wells, ASD

2Community Lay Director’s

Message

Joshua 1:9

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Over the last year I have been in fervent prayer for guidance as we transition as a community to a new location. I came upon this verse and it has set my concerns to rest. As we move ahead with the transition to St Paul UMC, I know that God is with The Greater Cincinnati Emmaus community. He has blessed us and continues to do so. This is an exciting time for the community as we celebrate the last walk at Hyde Park Community UMC and the 41 years of blessings that the Father has given us. The love and caring that HPCUMC has shown us over the years, our gratefulness cannot be expressed in words alone. A special thank you to Hyde Park Community United Methodist Church for all they have done in support of our community and a thank you to St. Paul United Methodist Church for partnering with us as we head in to the future. So as a community, let us be strong and courageous. The LORD is with us! De Colores! YBIC Ennes

Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Robin Shehan, and I am the newly appointed member-at-large on our community’s board of directors. As such, I am YOUR representative to present any comments, questions, concerns, suggestions, etc., to the board.

To let you know a little bit about me, I went on my original walk in March 2009 (GCWW #101, table of Sarah, clap). I have been very active in the community from the start, first serving behind the scenes in the kitchen during walk weekends. In 2013, I joined the board as the newsletter editor and served in that capacity until December 2014. In January 2015, I took on the Social/Kitchen co-chair role, responsible for getting meals served during walk weekends. I ended that tenure in December 2017, but have remained active in a support role. I have also served on five teams.

I now return to the board to serve in this new role. I want to be your voice to the board. If there is anything you would like to communicate to the board, don’t hesitate to contact me either by phone or email. My home phone is 513-474-2708, and my email is [email protected]. If calling, please leave a voice message. Like many people today, I seldom answer the phone for an unknown number, but will return your call if you leave a message. Thank you for allowing me to serve in this capacity. I look for-ward to hearing from you.

De Colores!

Looking for a way to get involved with Emmaus? Want to spread a little love? Our Agape Chair is in need of 1-2 assistants to help collect/organize the agape provided by the community, and to help with set up for Walk weekends (a few hours, Thursday of the Walks).

If interested, please contact:

Kim Corrigan at 513-293-9907

A Note from the Community Good Shepherd

Being a part of a share group is a wonderful way to maintain the bonds of faith and fellowship in your heart from your weekend Walk to Emmaus. It is also a way for the brother/sisterhood of our Christian faith to be accountable in the service of our church, family and community. It is in that spirit that I encourage you to become part of a share group. I have a list of 15 Emmaus Share Groups which would welcome new members Email/call me if interested However, you are not limited to these. YOU can start your own! The core of the share group can be pilgrims from previous walks and people who have never experienced a walk. This is a good way to sponsor pilgrims just like the person who sponsored you. Christ is Counting on You and the Order of the Reunion booklet is the foundation of your share group meeting. I would like to ask that if you do form a new share group and are open to new pilgrims, please e-mail me the information so I can add it to the Share Group Directory. De Colores!

As I write this there are currently 26 open

spots for kitchen volunteers, and some meals

have only 2 people signed up. Sunday lunch

has zero people. As a reminder, all meals

need 6 volunteers with the exception of

Saturday dinner where we prefer to have

8 helpers. As you'll see on the job board

when you sign up, breakfast helpers are

asked to arrive at 7:15, lunch helpers arrive

at 11:30, and dinner helpers come at 4:45 on

Friday and 4:30 on Saturday. Please pick a

meal convenient to your schedule and sign

up on the job boards soon!

ALSO, as part of our transition to St. Paul

Community UMC in Madeira, we will be

engaging a new caterer for the Walks. If

you have a suggestion for a caterer to be

considered we'd love to hear who you might

recommend. We've already begun the

screening process and would love additional

suggestions. Please call or email Les Sper

with your thoughts . 513-675-5987
