VICTOR LEW!S AND I FIRST .. in the (~arl}l "las" I was a pizza delivery boy working at a neighborhood jOint when I got the call. New Yorker, Danny Me/cion, had inva.ded Lincoln with his brand of city jazz/pop, was or(';:lBnizing a rock OPera called "Carouse! For Freaks", and wouid I play piano. : knew that I was in over my head, but [ fJa!!ant!y dug in, and our first practice commenced. Victor INa;::; sitting at his kit reading Down Beat with ana hand, and conducting the rhythm sectlon with his oUler, wtlile reading Trom thE~ chart ... and of course, never missing a beat.

i came and went...to be replaced a teenaged Torn Larson, the rock opera came and went, and Victor Lewis became one of the ieading components of the Ne\N York jazz scene, Victor has been performing through the past 20 years .. ,and his star is still His list of recording projects, and past works are endless and il11pressive, He even portrays Papa Jo Jones in Robert Altman's upcoming new film, "Kansas City'"

THE UNL J,A.ZZ EI'JSEMBLE. .. tDok the stage at Kimball Hall at 8:00 P.M. on Saturday, February 10, 1996. The evening's performance was a part of The Nebraska Jazz Festival that Oavid Sharp puts together every February. The ensemble opened with a Bill Holman's arrangement of "I Remember You". Michael Parkinson, who is the Director of Jazz Studies at the University of il/Jissourl at Kansas City, then joined featured guest artist The first piece was a Latin flavored Steve Swallow compomposition entitled "Como En Vietnam". Michael Parkinson certainly displayed a beautiful, crystal clear tone on his Then the ensemble waltzed away to the "Blue Bollnets"-an original composition by Dave Zoller, and played the tune through in it's entirety This time Michael Parkinson displayed his skills on the flugelhorn. "Blue Bonnets" was an extremeiy interesting waltz, with a haunting meloc1y .. ending abruptly in dissonance. ! thoroughly enjoyed tile The ensemble concluded with Oliver Blues" ... including a screamin' alto

The Nebraska Jazz Orchestra witll Ed Love directing, The Ol'chestra Charles Mingus composition entitled Fiockefelier At AtticaH.arranged David Sharp. NJO closed with the Hoagy Carmichael On My Mind". The band took the song from a ballad to a style, and then back to a ballad Jon Tom and Tom Harvill a!\played iine solos.

And then Victor struck, and drove trle Nebraska Jazz Orchestra to new heights. The composition, "Victor Strikes" is an originst! ... written by David Str)/ker. David Stryker is a very innovative jazz guitar plaYf3(, who is also originally from Omaha, and now lives and wmks on the east coast David is gaining considerable attention as a compos'ar, as well as a guitar player. wwte the song for Victor. Victor's roBing drum solos and energy are hard to match, Dave Sharp played a fine alto bursting with energy. I assure you that the felt the energy.

The N,JO then broke down into a small group, with \iictor Lewis continuing to drive the lJand. Victor chose to perform two of his original tunes. The l'irst \ivas calied .. "Loss Of A Moment"(Don't wai:. too long, or you'll miss an opportunity). Ask Victor to explain that one, when you see him next time. Tom Harvill played a beautiful solo. Ed Love's solo was ~!owing and melodiC. Vicar's cyrnba\ and brush work was exciting and flawless. He is definitely a master player. The group then jumped into an extemely quick paced tune entit!ed "Hey! it's Me You're talking To 1',/1e". The tune moved from a samba into a swing stye, and then back to a samba. Bob Krueger took a trumpet solo, playing quick, successive, and weI! defined notes. Tom Harvii! took a very impressive solo. Tom (iefinitely has his own style ... i was impressed, The NcJO stepped back out on stage ... and sizzled through a Mark Thompson composition. Victor Lewis deserved and received a standing ovation ... not onty for his playing, but for inspiring the NJO to reach and stretch. fv1y hat was off to thern aiL

a very tender rendition of "Body and Soul" .. you really missed something special. The arrangement was slick. I car: still hear Bob Bowman's solo on "Footprints" ... the solo was memorable. My favorite was Kurt \Neill's compOSition, "Speak Low"'. ,arranged in a samba style I am still hearing tIle tune. Two fantastic shows l !!

The rapport between Claudio Rodi1i and Abate personally and professionally is something to bE;hold They really have a lot of respect for one another. They also consistantly inject humor into their on stage banter .. they are funny. 80th periormances surpassed my 8xpectations ... another very special weekend.
