Phase 1 – Seeking - Believing• Those in this phase are individuals that are seeking a relationship with

God. Their biblical knowledge will vary, yet their need is all the same: to place their faith in Christ as their personal Savior.

• Our responsibilities include unconditional love, modeling the joyous genuine Christian life and sharing the truths of the gospel.

• Key teaching topics include the following: the origin of the world, people and sin; that the Bible is God’s Word; God is Creator, Lord and Savior; Jesus is the sinless, Son of God; Sin separates people from God; the penalty of sin is death; Christ is the substitute that pays the penalty for sin; Jesus forgives those that repent; this transaction is completed when one believes in the sacrificial death, burial and resurrection of Jesus; assurance of salvation is possible

• An individual in this phase will be working on the following areas: observing believers; developing a trust in the Word of God; recognizing need for salvation and God’s provision; accepting God’s plan for salvation; be baptized as a picture of genuine faith; have interest in bringing others to the same knowledge and experience of God.

Phase 2 – Believing to Following• The believer is now ready to develop godly habits.

Reading, memorizing, studying, and applying the Bible begin to become a major part of the disciple’s life. The disciple has a strong desire to become like Christ and will begin putting off selfish desires and habits to be replaced with ones that are like Christ’s.

• Much of the training at this stage involves grounding the believer in basic doctrines and helping him/her to develop spiritual habits pertaining to prayer, the Word, fellowship, evangelism, worship, trials, conflict resolution, victory over sin, obedience and service to God. One moves from this phase at the point when the above areas become habits.

Phase 3 – Following to Leading• The disciple is now ready to start leading others.

Spiritual habits and a sound understanding of the Scriptures have been developed. As part of their own discipleship they begin to develop their interest in creating and leading other disciples.

• Activities include the following: leadership training; regularly sharing faith with others; initiating restoration of others; teaching others; defending the truth against false teachers; actively exhorting other believers; counseling others with the Scriptures; leading others through discipleship. One moves from this phase at the point when he/she is ready to train other disciple makers.

Phase 4 – Leading to Supervising• The disciple is now ready to equip new

leaders. He/she has led many individuals to a closer walk with Christ and is now capable of training others. Progression has been made from observing to helping, then to being helped, and on to being observed, to finally training apprentices.
