Developed by the Army Resiliency Directorate GRASSROOTS INITIATIVE Not in My Squad (NIMS) was developed by the 15th Sergeant Major of the Army in 2015 as a grassroots initiative focused on empowering squad leaders to build professional climates founded on mutual trust and cohesive teams. NIMS workshops are facilitated by the Center for the Army Profession and Ethic (CAPE) and the Army Resiliency Directorate (ARD). WHY NIMS? NIMS focuses on changing a unit’s environment’s by building a culture of character, self-development and performance from the ground up. As the Army’s first level of leadership, squad leaders have the most ability to influence their Soldiers and effect change. Through NIMS, squad leaders learn strategies to create and expand positive unit environments, share best practices with each other and develop actionable solutions. HOW DOES IT WORK? The workshop emphasizes the need for leaders to engage with their Soldiers, assume responsibility for their own behavior, exhibit Army professionalism, and uphold the Army ethic both on and off duty. WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE? NIMS workshops consist of an opening introductory session, facilitated working group sessions, and a closing backbrief session to the hosting Command Sergeant Major. The working group sessions cover three main topics: Identity, Climate and Culture. How have you built, maintained, or restored a positive squad climate? What challenges do you face with regard to building a positive climate?

WHY NIMS?

Dignity, Respect, Inclusion and Trust? — What Army policies and practices help you build a positive climate or create challenges? — What are examples of sub-cultures within the Army? — What happens when sub-cultures become misaligned with Army culture?
