FRAMESHEET The CHIEF frame is designed to fit Granite Tactical Gear CHIEF packs. CHIEF frames are engineered to flex like your back but never “wash out.” Unlike a system with aluminum stays that can only flex evenly from top to bottom, our CHIEF System is engineered with three distinct zones of flexibility. The lumbar zone is the most flexible, absorbing the shock of each step. The mid-back zone is semirigid, transferring weight evenly downward toward the belt while allowing the perfect amount of torsional flex. The upper zone is rigid, allowing the load lifters to pull the whole load close to your back. The CHIEF frame can flex but always returns to it’s original shape - never deforming like aluminum stays frequently do.

Body Armor Compatible Harness (BACH) The CHIEF System works in conjunction with our harness system that can be customized to work while you are wear-ing body armor. The BACH system compensates for the change in fit that is imposed when in use with a body armor vest. While wearing body armor vests, you already have the pad-ding over your shoulder from the vest, and additional padding becomes too bulky resulting in loss of flexibility. Also, the body armor creates a void in the lumbar area resulting in a loss of contact between you and your pack in this critical area for load transfer. Granite Gear’s BACH system effectively solves both of these problems by incorporating remov-able padding in the shoulder straps and additional padding in the lumbar zone. The remov-able shoulder strap padding is designed to allow better flexibility while wearing body armor. This advantage is best demonstrated in the prone firing position. In this position, the shoulder strap padding is reduced, allowing for better headroom while sighting your weapon. In addition, while wearing body armor, you can add a special lumbar pad that fits below the back body armor plate and brings the lumbar area of the pack frame in contact with your back to allow for effective weight transfer.

BACK PAD Our back pad is smooth on the back, so all you feel is the cush of the foam pad evenly across the whole length of where the pack is in contact. The foam pad is covered using a stretch fabric that is both comfortable and durable. This amazing fabric does well at managing moisture, and not letting any into the foam padding. The fabric dries quickly after you remove your pack.

SHOULDER STRAPS The shoulder straps are 3D shaped to fit the contours around your neck and torso, as well as the contour over your shoulder. Each strap attach-es using our Pivot Point hardware. The Pivot Point allows the straps to naturally cant and fit the exact angle of your shoulder. The inside fabric of our shoulder straps is the same as our back pad for all the same reasons.

BELTS The belt is attached using our exclusive Pivot Point stainless steel hardware. With this system our belts are allowed to pivot with the natural movement of your hips. A belt that moves with you means it doesn’t move against you. Our belts have a plastic exoskeleton. This rigid plastic exoskeleton, when fitted properly, forms a cup over your hip bone and does a great job of transferring the load to your hips. Our belts feature dual-density foam and the same stuffed construction as our shoulder straps. Our belts form a continuous wrap that hugs your hips without leaving gaps.

Stand up straight with your feet shoulders-width apart.

Tilt your head forward and place your hands on your hips, thumbs to the back.

Note: Hold the line between the tip of your index

fingers and thumbs parallel to the ground, with the

tip of your index fingers resting on the crest of

your hipbones, and your thumbs near the center

of your back.

With a flexible tape, have someone measure from the most prominent bone at the base of your neck to an imaginary line drawn to connect your thumbs. This will be your torso length.

NOTE: Follow the contours of

your back with a flexible tape

to accurately determine your

torso measurement.

Regular Torso Fits 17" to

22"

NOTE: Each framesheet has adjustment set-

tings spaced in one inch increments to further

fine-tune your fit. If you measured at 20" then no

adjustment is necessary for torso length (default

setting) but you may need to adjust the width of the

shoulder straps. This is determined in the steps on

the following page. Follow through steps on next page to

determine shoulder strap width and components.

DETERMINE YOUR TORSO LENGTH

Setting your pack to your correct torso length is crucial to getting the pack to fit properly. If it is set up too short the hip-belt will ride up your back and not effectively transfer weight to your hips; too long and the pack will pull back and not ride as close to your back as possible. To determine your torso length, have someone measure the distance between your seventh cervical vertebra and the crest of your hipbones, using a flexible tape measure as outlined below. Your Torso Length will determine where to attach the pivot point shoulder strap hardware.

Page 3: Granite Tactical Gear CHIEF Operation Manual

In order to determine which harness components that are right for you and tune the pack for a custom fit, you will measure your neck, chest, and waist. CHIEF packs come with a default setup of a medium belt and medium shoulder straps (set at wide). If your sizing does not reflect the size currently on the pack then you will need to follow the steps on pages 5,6,7 to exchange and adjust components.

MEASURE FOR CUSTOM FIT COMPONENTS

(Measured by circumference at hip crest) Small 28" to 34"Medium 34" to 40" Large 40+

Your chest measurement should be taken just under your arms and across your shoulder blades. After measuring yourself locate the sizing tag to determine if the pack is equipped with the correct size strap. If a tag cannot be found assume that it is a medium. If you are a 20" torso with a ‘regular’ neck and need to exchange shoulder straps sizes see page 6 only. If you need to exchange shoulder strap sizes and make a torso/width adjustment then you will have to follow all the steps on pages 6 & 7. Be sure to replace the shoulder straps with the correct size.

Use the size chart below and go by your regular pant size waist measurement. If you don’t know this, take a measurement with a flexible tape measure with the tape next to your skin, around your waist. Measure the circumference at your hip points. Or, you can simply try on a hip belt; just be certain to remove bulky clothing or wear clothing suited for your conditions. A properly sized hip belt will wrap over your hip bones and still leave a gap in the padding at the front. All belts have a sizing tag on them. Locate the tag to determine if it is equipped with the correct size belt. If it is not then follow the steps on page 5 to exchange belt for correct size.

FINE-TUNING THE FITSWAPPING THE HIP BELT

It is not necessary to remove the framesheet from the pack to swap the hip belt. This pro-cess is a lot easier with an empty pack. Our Power Hook system allows easy access to the mounting hardware. You will use a #2 Phillips screwdriver on the hardware. When remounting the hip belt make sure it is right side up and arcing upward.

Undo Hip Stabilizer straps - one each side.

Use a #2 Phillips screwdriver to remove mounting screw.

3

With screw removed lift hip belt off mounting post.

4

Undo Power Hook Flap which is wrapped around the tail section of the framesheet where the hip belt is mounted.

NOTE: The seam between the Power Hook Flap and the back pad should wrap 1/4 inch around the bottom of the framesheet. This seam should follow a straight line with the seam on the hip belt.

Size: Chest Size: Small 34" to 40" Medium 40" to 46" Large 46" to 52"

2. Select Proper Fit Shoulder Strap

To accomodate variable width necks and shoulders all packs come with an adjust-able width bracket. To determine your setting we suggest you measure the circumference of your neck. The regu-lar width setting is for neck sizes 17" or smaller and wide is for 17.5" and larger as measured at the adam’s apple. If you measured regular and have a 20" torso no bracket adjustment is necessary. If you need to change width and/or torso length then you will have to adjust the bracket (page 7). Follow the next step before ad-justing torso length & strap width as you may need to exchange shoulder straps also.

FINE-TUNING THE FITSWAPPING AND ADJUSTING SHOULDER STRAPS

It is not necessary to remove the framesheet from the pack to adjust or swap shoulder straps. Our frame cutouts allow easy access to the mounting hardware. You will use a #2 Phillips screwdriver on the hardware. This process is a lot easier with an empty pack.

To adjust the torso length only, skip to step 3. To remove the shoulder straps, simply follow the photos below to access the mounting hardware. See the diagrams on page 6 for adjustment details.

Unthread the Load Lifter straps - one each side - located at top of shoulder straps.

Use a #2 Phil l ips screwdriver to remove hardware.

With shoulder straps re-moved the shoulder strap mounting bar can be sl id up or down for making a torso length adjustment. Details on next page.

Match up your torso length measurement to the corre-sponding pair of holes on this chart.

5 Place SHOULDER STRAP MOUNTING BAR under the proper holes for your torso length and for your neck/shoulder width. pgs 3-4

NOTE: Bar goes in from the backside of the framesheet. Move it by grasping it through the arrow shaped cutout.

6

Place the shoulder strap grommet hole over the shoulder strap mounting bar post sticking through the framesheet.

Mount shoulder strap screws into the threaded studs.

Be sure the lift handle between the shoulder straps is not twisted. Review steps one and two for reattaching straps.

NOTE: Use a number 2 Phillips screwdriver for a perfect fit. The Phillips driver on a Swiss Army Knife or the Phillips drivers found on multi tools will usually work fine for in-field adjustments.

REMOVE OR INSERT THE FRAMESHEETYou shouldn’t have to remove the framesheet from the pack under normal circumstances. However, you may want to remove it for cleaning or repairs.

NOTE: Removing and inserting the framesheet is much easier when the pack is com-pletely empty. Leave the shoulder straps and belt attached to the framesheet until it is removed.

Pull framesheet out by holding on to the tail section and pulling until the framesheet is com-pletely out of the pack body.

NOTE: If the framesheet is not coming out easily, check that all the straps mentioned above have been undone!

INSERT THE FRAMESHEET To reinsert the frame sheet follow steps 1-5 in reverse, 5-1. Be sure to check that the frame is slid as far up as possible. There is a webbing sleeve for it to rest in.

10 11

CONFIGURE HARNESS FOR BODY ARMORIn order to properly fit your pack over body armor you have to insert the Body Armor

Compatible Lumbar Pad and remove the Body Armor Compatible Shoulder Strap Padding.

Undo POWER HOOK FLAP which is wrapped around the tail section of the framesheet where the hip belt is mounted.

Hold flap out. Slide pad over flap. Large end on top.

Refold flap and secure to hip belt Velcro make sure that flap is completely wrapped over hip-belt and the flap seam is inline with hipbelt.

3 4

To remove the shoulder strap foam simply pull it out from under the elastic band. The Velcro is held at the top of the shoulder strap with a Velcro flap. When reat-taching be sure the top is set back into the flap correctly.

With the pack adjusted for body armor the absence of shoulder strap padding allows more flexibility for the head and neck. The lumbar pad helps transfer the weight effectively onto the hips and hip belt. For more details on the Body Armor Compatible Harness (BACH) please see page 1.

SNAP DRAGON-STERNUM STRAP RELEASEEvery second counts when you need to rapidly remove your backpack. Our new sternum strap quick release system doesn’t leave you fumbling with small buckles, especially with gloves on. Simply pull the webbing handle out with a quick snap and your sternum strap is released.

NOTE: Keeping your sternum strap snug and extra webbing rolled up tight allows for faster easier snap releases.

EASY PULL BELTWhen carrying extremely heavy loads it can be difficult to get your belt tight enough to keep the load on your hips. All CHIEF packs come with our easy pull belt which offers a mechanical advantage. Like a pulley system it requires minimal effort for maximum force. The forward direction of pull also makes tightening your belt easier.

ACCESS FEATURE The CHIEF Packs are accessed through the top in a conventional manner, or can also be accessed via a zippered front panel that allows for quick retrieval of items even if they are placed deep in the pack. We believe that our Access system is superior in function to the traditional sleeping bag compartment with a divider. Our Access panel provides quick access to the pack’s entire contents.

With access panel unzipped, there is a series of compression straps used to secure pack load. When loading pack through compression panel use these compression straps to secure pack contents before closing. Failure to use compression straps makes it more difficult to close panel and puts undo stress on the zippers.

21 Undo top buckles on pack overflow.

Now the access panel can be unzipped from both sides to expose pack contents.

B-TOGSB-TOGS Strap Wraps are a convenient way to adjust and fix the extra length of webbing on a pack’s adjustable straps. B-TOGS, are silent and do not stick to clothing like Velcro strap wraps. They are removable/replaceable without a sewing kit. The bungee allows you to make length adjustments without undoing the tog.

21Simply roll up loose webbing.

Pull bungee around T-bar on opposite side to secure wrapped webbing

PROPER FITWhat you will notice immediately with our CHIEF packs is amazing comfort. The load is evenly distributed over your back and onto your hips. You have plenty of room to tilt your head back and look up. The fit feels like it was made custom for your body. The ride is very well cushioned and stable. The pack feels in tune with your natural body motion and shape. And finally, the ride is stable; no swaying or sagging, and you can totally control the load. After you’ve been on the trail for a day, you will appreciate this pack even more! Your back muscles should still feel good, you shouldn’t have any hot spots, and you should have a minimum amount of hipbone fatigue.

HYDRATION SETUPSCHIEF packs are fully hydration compatible with very effective hydration configurations. The hydration bladder’s hose can be routed out of the bottom (see bottom routing) of the side hydration bladder pockets and up the shoulder straps resulting in better flow and a more convenient position for the bite valve. The bite valve is then in position to be used hands-free. If desired, the hydration hose can also be routed in the conventional man-ner over the shoulder. Inside the hydration side pocket there is port (see top routing) that allows you to route the hose out of the top from inside of the pack.

FLATBED

ALL-PURPOSE & HIGHLY CONFIGURABLE The CHIEF Flatbed is an all-purpose, highly configurable and adaptable load carriage system. It uses the same CHIEF Frame and Body-Armor Compatible Harness (BACH) system as the CHIEF Patrol and CHIEF Recce packs.

The CHIEF Flatbed is designed to carry odd loads such as rescue/extrication tools, breaching tools, medical devices, hard cases, Dry-Bags or even an elk quarter! The PALS (MOLLE) webbing on the back panel and optional flaps can accept any molle pouches such as our line of MP Pouches, as well as many custom pouches we have developed for mission specific kit, and can be used with our Volie Straps to securely lash on nearly any tool or supply.

Read on to see the options currently available, or to get ideas for how to use the pack in different configurations depending on the mission. The ideas and options listed are by no means the only possible ones, the Flatbed system is designed to be able to improvise and adapt. Contact us if you need a solution to attach you odd load. If we have not already developed it, we may be able to quickly design a kit specific pouch or lashing system to fit your mission.

Page 11: Granite Tactical Gear CHIEF Operation Manual

20 21

FLATBED WITHOUT FLAPThe CHIEF Flatbed comes with horizontal PALS webbing to attach nearly anything. 3 straps with SR buckles are integrated into each side, and mate in the center for quick and secure lashing.

FLAP OPTIONSCurrently we offer 4 different flap options but as require-ments change, we may add to this offer. Contact us if you need a custom flap.Reversible flaps offer horizontal PALS (molle) webbing on the outside, as well as vertical PALS webbing on the inside. The flap can be reversed so the vertical PALS webbing is on the outside if desired. To do so, you will need to swap the male & female buckle parts . A needle nose pliers aids in this process.Standard flaps work for loads up to 10" thick. Extended flaps handle up to 15" thick loads, like some hard cases. Vehicle Attachment Flap same as the Standard with the addition of 6 heavy duty vehicle attachment loops.

ATTACHING/REVERSING FLAPSA Flat tipped screwdriver will aid in this process. Use the plastic threader bar to weave the the flap webbing to the pack webbing as shown (fig. A & B). Fold the plastic threader back at the creases and tuck into the loops to finish the connection (fig. C).

VOILE STRAPS & VERTICAL CONVERSIONVoile Straps are made with a powerful stretch urethane, in combination with a rugged nylon buckle. They are recommended for lashing equipment to the Flatbed because they never loosen, and they can be cinched tightly for securing heavy items. For lashing equipment vertically, use Voile straps in combination with our vertical conversion bar, which converts horizontal PALS webbing into a vertical lash point.

Voile straps are available in 9", 12", 15", 18" and 24" lengths.

LATERAL BAG SETThe Lateral Bag Set attaches to the flatbed to form a central vertical pocket which is perfect for carrying a litter, rope, drybag, etc. securely cinched in with two straps across the center. Bags on each side zip open at the top, and provide 700 cubic inches of storage per side. The lateral bag set comes with a plastic threader bar which is used to weave through the PALs webbing on the bags and Flatbed panel for a secure attachment. After threading the plastic threader bar, it is folded back at the crease, and the end is tucked back into the PALS webbing.
