awaq from his present location, zig-zagging through the rochq terrain in
search
of
bette r cover. Undoubtedlq. his transm ission had given awaq his
position and enemq artillerq w as about to swamp the area with suppres-
sion fire. His odds w r bad.

The terrain u a s flat enough but rough. mahing it difficult for his SMS to
perform at peah efficiencq.
He
reached for the side control panels and
punched a few buttons. switching his Gear to walker mode, top speed.
Despite the gimballed suspension of the cochpit and the Gear's efforts to
compensate for the uneven terrain. he felt himself uncomfortablq rocked
bat h and forth.

quich chech on his sensors confirmed his ear -spot-
ted. Six blips appeared on his tail and were closing in on him. He was
alone. his team destroqed. with nowhere to hide.
More blips appeared on his sensors. this time ahead of him. closing in
fast. His heart shipped a beat. then he re alized the IFFsignal was friendlq.
Air support. He slowed dow n his Gear. spun it around and kept it iogging
backwards. h is autocannon readq. Whatever survived the s trike
he
could
handle for Sure fanqthing did.
