JP Adler Family

The name John Peter (J.P.) Adler is synonymous back to the early 1900’s with the Adler Movie Theaters. It was with this start in the entertainment field that J.P. carried an entertainment empire that would be a part of Marshfield’s history forever.

J.P. Adler was born in Marshfield on September 28, 1887. When he was nine, during his school vacation, J.P. helped haul bricks for the Opera House which was being built by his father. At the age of 11, he captained the bill boys who distributed theater advertising throughout the city, and later became bill poster and stage manager for many attractions that played at the Opera House.

On December 1, 1908, J.P. took over the Opera House. In 1918, J.P. purchased the Trio Theater. In 1927, after extensive

remodeling, J.P. held a contest to rename the theater. It was named “Relda,” which is simply Adler spelled backwards.

On his 50th birthday, in 1937, J.P. opened the New Adler Theater. The New Adler Theater had an electric sign tower that emitted 18,000 watts of light from an assortment of colored bulbs and neon tubes. Inside, beyond the many extravagances, the theater also boasted of automatically controlled air-conditioning, a high-fidelity sound system, and state-of-the-art film projectors with high-intensity lamps. In the late 1940’s, J.P. expanded the lobby areas of his theaters to include concession stands offering candy, popcorn and soda.

In 1963, Youth Center manager, Paul J. Rogers, was hired by the Adler Theater Company. After working in nearly every position in the theater from Usher to Doorman, he was called for military service. When he returned, he became assistant manager and later manager of the Adler Company. In 1972, he became the new owner of the business in Marshfield.

In 1993 the Marshfield Area Community Foundation was established by the two daughters of J.P. and Rosamond Victoria Adler. Anne and Bette Adler shared a goal: to make a long-term impact on their home community of Marshfield in the name of their parents. Ann & Bette established the Adler Family Fund within the Foundation, which was used for the Kodiak Bear Exhibit! This exhibit is another way the Adler’s have helped with Marshfield entertainment.

Kodiak Bear Cubs

On May 5th three male Kodiak bear cubs were rescued on the west side

of Kodiak Island, Alaska. The cubs were discovered by a guided hunting par-

ty after they heard report of the cubs’ mother being illegally shot. Upon relay-

ing the discovery to the local Alaska Fish and Game officials, the guides were granted special permission to remove the cubs from their den. According to wildlife biologist Nate Svoboda, the cubs’ condition and imminent weather prompted the unconventional rescue by the hunting party.

“We were fortunate to receive help from so many dedicated people to get the

cubs out of the field and to safety,” Svoboda said. “We are also lucky to locate permanent homes for them. It can be

difficult to find suitable facilities that can commit to the long-term care, enrichment and public education programs that go

along with taking responsibility for the cubs.”

The privilege of having Kodiak bears at Wildwood Zoo is an extremely rare opportunity; they are rarely removed from the Kodiak landscape. Wildwood Park and Zoo will be one of only a few zoos or sanctuaries in North America to house true Kodiak bears. Wildwood Zoo staff will work closely with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game and the Kodiak Brown Bear Trust to ensure full advantage of this tremendous educational opportunity is taken.

Kodiak Bears are a subspecies of Brown Bears. They are the same species as Alaskan Brown bears and Grizzly bears though differences can be noted. Kodiak bears are the biggest subspecies of Brown bear and are one of the two biggest bear species in the world, the other being Polar bear. Wild Kodiak bears can grow to be 1,400 lbs. and stand 10 feet tall, while captive Kodiaks have grown to be much larger.
