ead out on the highway.Interstate 5, specifically. Nostal-gic cruisers will coax their col-

lectibles out of hiding and hit theroad this year for Graffiti Weekends 27thanniversary event.

Nearly 1,000 drivers pull into DouglasCounty each summer to show off theirclassic cars during Graffiti Weekend.

Despite rising fuel costs, this year willbe no different.

A lot of people from out of town havecalled and are planning on coming, saidDon Larson, a member of the Stray AngelsCar Club. Weve been getting goodresponses so were hoping everything goes

good.Graffiti Weekend started out as an ideabetween the members of three car clubswho wanted to relive the 50s by cruisingtheir classics down Harvard Avenue in1982. Its evolved into one of DouglasCountys most noteworthy events.

Featuring five days of hot rods and one-of-a-kind creations of all models, colorsand horsepower, the event is expected todraw about 20,000 participants and specta-tors over its five-day span.

More than 15 events are scheduled to

run from July 9 through July 13.One of those events is the Umpqua Flat-

heads Roseburg Graffiti Night Cruise, pre-sented by the Umpqua Flatheads Car Clubon Saturday.

Classic, shining beauties will circleRoseburgs downtown starting at DouglasAvenue and Fowler Street and wrapping

around Jackson and Main Streets. The owners of the automobiles are pas-

sionate about their sparkling babies. They have meticulously restored them andpolished them, and some have kept themhidden like valuable jewels in anticipationof a Graffiti Weekend debut.

With requirements this year that the cars

hail from 1965 or earlier, the vehiclesevoke memories of another era for oldergenerations. And theres a certain senti-mentality between people and their cars.

It reminds them of old times, said Lar-son.

Whether she received the 1929 Cadillacas a Christmas gift, he built that 1932

Chevy coupe from the engine up or thecouple inherited a 1957 Thunderbird fromgenerations past, Graffiti Weekenders bothnear and far will have the opportunity tostep back in time for five days, dance toold-time favorites, mingle over slow-cooked barbecue and cruise their classicsdown Main Street just like old times.

    The News-Review

The orangey-red 56 Bel Air two-door hardtop found its way toMonna Healy as a Christmas giftin 2001.

She had just gotten off work and pulled

into her driveway thinking to herself,Wow, I wonder whos at our house? It was a gift from her husband, Mike

Healy.I was speechless, Monna Healy said.He wanted a partner vehicle for his

stock 56 midnight blue Chevy pickup andthought the investment would suit his wifeperfectly.

The couple often traveled in the pickupfrom Eugene for Graffiti Weekend in theearly 90s. The Healys joined the StrayAngels Car Club in 1998, after moving to

Roseburg. However, cruising the his and her carswas cut short by the death of her husband,a Vietnam veteran, in 2003. As a tribute toMike Healy, Monna Healy, her daughterand her two grandchildren led the Saturdaynight Graffiti Weekend cruise that sameyear.

At first, Healy thought she would sellboth of the cars. She didnt see herself tak-ing care of the classics, nor did she have agreat interest in holding on to the automo-biles. Her husband had always taken care

of upkeep and when he died, his wife did-nt envision herself taking his position asmechanic.

I didnt think I would follow throughwith all this, she said, gesturing to thetwo, polished vehicles in her driveway as aneighbor passing by slowed to catch a bet-ter glimpse of the shiny collectibles. Her

husband was the car guy, she said. With a lot of coaxing from other mem-bers in the Stray Angels Car Club, the

widow chose to keep her gift and her hus-bands pickup, too. Since that decision, shes entered the cars in no fewer than 50

shows. At the beginning of June, her BelAir won best interior at a car show thecreme vinyl/fabric upholstery matches thehardtop as well as the whitewall tires, another custom detail she decided to add.

I am really into it, she said, beamingabout her most recent award and thenadding that her husband would beshocked.

I always thought of it as a guy thing, said 60-year-old Healy, the only femaledirector the Stray Angels Car Club hasever seen.

Now Healy takes pride in adding littledetails to her Bel Air, such as the musicnotes on the right front side. She attributesthe stickers to her string of trophies, whichstarted with third place and led to firstplace only after she had applied the decals.

Its gotta be the musical notes, shesaid.

Her feminine touches to the car alsoinclude pink fuzzy dice and a magnet onher dash that reads, My car is not old, itsa classic.

With the fun of owning two cars,

though, comes the occasional difficulties ofenjoying them without her husband. The biggestpush for Monna occurred last year when she hadto make a decision to cruise by herself duringGraffiti Weekend.

She said she forced herself to get into her car andenter the cruise line on Douglas Avenue. After acouple of laps, Healy was at ease behind the wheel.

She hasnt been completely alone in taking careof the two vehicles; she has received a lot of helpfrom other members in the car club. After her BelAir broke down one day, another member of theStray Angels Car Club rebuilt her 265 originaltwo-speed power glide engine.

Healy said theres something about the trustingnature of people with classic cars, recounting thetimes she has had trouble with the Bel Air andhad to pull off on the side of the road. Always, people traveling to or from car shows havestopped and helped her get the tires rolling again.

I think car people are special, she said.Healy is especially excited about the opening

event at Graffiti Weekend this year. The kickoff to the festivities will be a car show

from 3 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, dedicated to U.S.veterans.

You can reach reporter Cara Pallone at 957-4208 or by e-mail at [email protected].

WINCHESTER When JohnFeeback, 61, takes his 1930Model AFord pickup out fora cruise, he said the most

common comments he receives are fromolder folks who say, Boy, I had one justlike it.

Not quite.I try to be polite about it, said Fee-

back. The only original part of his automobile

is the body. He has completely restored thestreet rod to its current condition and esti-mates he invested about $6,000 in costsand hundreds of hours listening to TalkRadio while working on the rig in hisgarage.

The retired battalion fire chief, formerlyof Klamath Falls, bought the old pickupfrom his brother-in-law four years ago. Itwas rundown, dirty, greasy and disassem-bled.

My brother-in-law was not a mechan-ic, said Feeback.

He rebuilt the engine last winter, installing a Chevrolet 327 small-block

with fuel-injected heads and a Holley four-barrel carburetor.

Now, the car is for sale.It makes about 300 horsepower, said

Feeback, who added that for a 2,400-pound vehicle, thats plenty of power.

Feebacks history as a mechanic datesback to high school, when he started paint-ing kids cars. He also took auto body andrefinishing courses at Oregon TechnicalInstitute. The handyman said he hasrestored dozens of old classics since then.

His latest project, the shiny, jet-blackautomobile with purple ghost flamesstretching across the hood, had been pulledout of the garage for viewing. Blue fuzzydice hung from the rearview mirror andFeeback demonstrated air conditioning ofthe 30s by popping open the front dash-board window. Feeback said he hasentered the pickup in about 50 car shows, some as far as the California Bay Area.

He counted under his breath the trophieshe has garnered with the Ford and pointedto a couple of them in his garage, but helost track after about 10.

However, the president of the UmpquaFlatheads Car Club will not be showing hisvehicle at the annual Graffiti Weekend Rose-burg Town Center Car Show on Saturday.

A part here, a part there for retired fire chief

His favorite part of theweekend is the Graffiti NightCruise on Saturday night, when nearly 650 cars circleRoseburgs downtownstreets.

Feebacks highly cus-tomized machine will be inthe cruise line with its tubu-lar frame, Jaguar rear end, independent front wheel sus-pension, a Chevy turbo 400automatic transmission, chrome bumpers and a tilttelescopic steering columnfrom a 65 Cadillac.

Without any restoration, astock pickup in the 30swould have had headlights, mechanical brakes and a 10-

    gallon tank the very

basics. There was no heater,no radio and certainly, no

chrome.Feeback said the car wouldhave sold for about $600,brand new.

Now, he will sell theModel Afor $35,000 to$40,000.

While Feeback said hedoesnt have any particularplace he likes to cruise hisclassic, one thing is for cer-tain: It doesnt stay hidden inthe garage.

The next show he is plan-ning on attending is in Van-couver, Wash.

After the sale of this baby,Feeback will have his eye outfor a 32 Highboy FordRoadster.

It will be a day o thunder, and its time to showDaytona Beach what the Roseburg regions gotunder the hood, according to Bill McAnally, promotero the Toyota Bi-Mart Firecracker 150 presented by

    NAPA Auto Parts.

The NASCAR Camping World Series Divisionrace explodes July 11 at the Douglas CountySpeedway.

Thats right. NASCAR racing teams and proessionaldrivers will circle the oval in Roseburg, the onlyNASCAR-sanctioned event in the entire state oOregon this year.

And ans who want to see more o thesame and maybe even a NASCAR-sponsored racetrack in the regionone day should come out in orce, support their avorite driver and takein the richness o proessional stockcar racing in the seventh annual visitto town, according to Bill McAnally, owner o Bill McAnally Racing.

Weve always had a great crowdsince we frst came to Roseburg in2002, says the ormer NASCARWinston West driver, who owns threeracing teams based in Antelope,Caliornia. We love the beautiul

Northwest, and the way the anstreat us up here.

Support or the Toyota Bi-MartFirecracker 150 presented by NAPA

Auto Parts is important to continued racing in theregion and to uture decisions by NASCAR aboutbuilding a permanent acility in the region, McAnallysays.

NASCAR keeps talking about building a new majoracility in the Northwest, says McAnally. Thebest way to let Daytona Beach know they shouldbe building a racetrack in Oregon is to get a bigturnout and show NASCAR that NASCAR belongsin Oregon.

Many local businesses get involved in supportingthe race each year, the promoter said.

Fans also turn out in orce, and he warns that ticketsshould be purchased as early as possible, becausepeople have been turned away rom the gate in thelast two years.

Theres even an opportunity to watch a caravano NASCAR transporters arrive in town loaded

Tickets to the VIP event are an additional $30 andcan be purchased at the Douglas County Speedwayticket ofce or at the Douglas County Fairgroundsticket ofce.

It takes you to the next level, McAnally says o theVIP tent area.

The race will be ollowed by a hal-hour freworksshow, McAnally says.

Now in its 55th season, the NASCAR CampingWorld Series Division can be traced back to 1954,

when NASCAR came to the WestCoast and began sanctioning thePacifc Coast Late Model circuit, with many o the races run ondirt tracks.

Through the 1960s and 1970s theseries visited ewer and ewer dirttracks. The fnal West Series race ona dirt track was in 1979.

The series has continued toevolve, with various changestaking place during the 1980s andearly 1990s. The construction obeautiul superspeedways suchas the Caliornia Speedway andLas Vegas Motor Speedway

sparked a resurgence in regionalNASCAR racing.

The series has had several titles. In addition to being known as the

Pacifc Coast Late Models, it was called GrandNational West, Winston West Grand National andthe NASCAR Winston West Series.

Camping World Series West cars are the same carsthat are used in the Nextel Cup and Busch series. The primary dierence is the engine size. GrandNational West cars are powered by a 358 cubic inchV-8 engine.

The races are a stepping stone or drivers headingor the premiere division o NASCAR, the SprintCup Series.

A ew o the more well-known recent graduates othe Camping World Series are Brendan Gaughan, who won back-to-back championships in the seriesin 2000 and 2001; Kevin Harvick, who won theseries championship in 1998; and David Gilliland, who was the West Series Sunoco Rookie o theYear in 2004.

with race cars between 2:00 and 3:30 p.m.this Thursday.

They will travel rom Interstate 5 along Edenbower

Boulevard and Stewart Parkway to the RoseburgBi-Mart. Cars and drivers will be on their way to apromotional event in the store parking lot that runsrom 4 to 6 p.m.

Anybody that can be on the street should come outand welcome the teams in, McAnally says. Wedlike to see them out there to give a big wave and awelcome to town.

On race day, McAnally said theres even more instore an opportunity or regular ans to get the redcarpet treatment at the Toyota Bi-Mart Firecracker150 presented by NAPA Auto Parts.

VIP tickets are on sale to the general public, andparticipants will enter a hospitality tent set up withood, beverages and entertainment.

Fans can come, small business owners can bringclients . . . its open to the general public, the promotersaid o the NASCAR VIP opportunity. Some o thedrivers will be there, along with agmen, a magician,a rae and dinner. Its just a great opportunity.

A Toyota Bi-Mart Firecracker 150 presented by NapaAuto Parts ticket is needed, which can be purchasedat Bi-Mart or $25.

Don Leber of Bi-Mart, Brian Ickler, winner of the 2007

Firecracker 150, and Bill McAnally of BMR.

    CRAIG REEDThe News-Review

Many young boys dream at somepoint about being a fireman

jumping on the fire engine andracing to the rescue.

Wes Melo of Roseburg has fulfilled thatdream through the years. He not only was avolunteer fireman for 24 years, he has alsoacquired his own two fire engines.

Fire departments and engines are a part ofthe 65-year-old Melos heritage. His father,

Frank, was the fire chief in Mount Shasta,Calif., when Melo was a boy. The depart-ments fire engine at that time was a Model T.

A similar fire engine, a 1915 Model TFord/American LaFrance chemical fireengine, is now parked in a garage next toMelos home a couple of miles north ofRoseburg. He and friends have been restoringthat engine since he purchased it in 1999, fin-ishing the work in March. A chemical reac-tion provides the pressure to shoot the water, similar to a large fire extinguisher, saidMelo.

Also parked in the garage is a 1923 ModelTT/Howe, another fire engine. He bought it

in 2004 and spent two years restoring it.Both engines I restored with a lot of helpfrom people in the community, he said.

Neither engine gets a lot of exposure to theoutside world, but Melo plans to bring themout for a drive and display during the upcom-ing Graffiti Weekend activities that include acelebration of the 100th anniversary of theModel T that was first introduced in 1908.

Steve Gorthy of Roseburg, another ModelT owner, is coordinating a show-and-shineevent in downtown Roseburg from 10 a.m. to3 p.m. Saturday, a barbecue dinner for Model

T owners in the Roseburg High School park-ing lot and then a parade lap by the Model Tcars to begin the evening cruise arounddowntown Roseburg. After their initial laps, the Model Ts will be parked and displayed inthe parking lot to the east of the DouglasCounty Library.

We hope to have 20-plus cars, Gorthysaid of the Model Ts that were produced byFord from 1908 through 1927, adding thathes hoping to have at least one car from eachof the production years.

Melo will have representatives from twoof those years with his two fire engines. He plans to drive the 1915 engine. FriendMark Spangler, who has consistentlyhelped on the restoration work, will drivethe 1923 truck.

I feel these are part of our history,Melo said. Theyre a way for me to try totake care of automobiles that have signifi-cant history. And theyve been fun to workon.

The motors and transmissions areprimitive and have a tendency to have

mechanical problems, but theyre easier tofix because theyre pretty simple, headded.

Melo was a 20-year employee of Cham-pion International forest products, makingseveral moves with that company beforemoving with it to Roseburg in 1988. Hewas a volunteer fireman for the six respec-tive departments of each town in which helived, but never became a paid fireman, although he did apply for a couple of firechief jobs early in his career.

He first got into the Model T business in1993 when he purchased a 1915 Touringcar, a five-passenger sedan. He worked on

it some, but it was basically restored.Six years later he not only bought the

fire engine, but also a 1915 Open Delivery,

similar to a little pickup. The latter wasalso already restored, but the engine need-ed a lot of work and got his attention foralmost seven days a week for the next nineyears.

That Ford/American LaFrance engine isthe seventh one ever made and is the sec-ond-oldest one known to still exist, according to Melo.

Melo said he had that engine on displayonly once in 2007, and it took the PeoplesChoice Award at the one show in which itappeared.

Im done buying, Melo said of ModelTs. I have enough to keep up what Ihave. Theres a fair amount of mainte-nance to these with their electrical sys-tems, fuel systems being sensitive andhaving to grease the chassis and bearings.

Gorthy, who owns a 1912 Model TSpeedster and a 1915 Touring car, said hewasnt sure if the first year or two ofModel T production would be represented, but hoped that a 1910 car from Eugenewould be on display during Saturdaysactivities.

    1915 Model T Touring Car

    HOW I GOTTHE CAR:

Built it from parts, starting when I was12.

WORK IVE DONE ON THE CAR:

I built it from Model T parts scroungedfrom anywhere and everywhere. It wasfirst assembled with generic parts, butthen I learned more about correct yearapplications and did it all over again. There is a lot of argument about the yearmodels that many parts came on, but thisis a pretty authentic 1915. The dated partshave 1915 serial numbers and the rest

correspond to published research. I actu-ally got industrial arts education credits atOregon State University when I wasenrolled there for doing sheet metal workon the body and presenting researchabout the Ford factory.

    WHAT THE

    VEHICLEMEANS TO

    ME:

My dad (JackGorthy) wasaphasic from astroke as a youngman, and when Iwas a kid, I spenta good deal oftime being hisverbal and auralinterpreter. Look-

ing for parts andrestoring the Twas a work-and-learn time forboth of us. I soldit a few years agoto a friend, Dave

Owens, who recently sold it back to me.When I sold it, I defined it to myself as amere object, hence, not worth being senti-mental over. But the truth is, Im gratefulto have it back and it really does repre-sent memories and activities that are pre-

cisely that sentimental in the extreme.

    HOW I GOT THE CAR:

It belonged to my granddad, Jack Gor-

thy. He noticed when I was only 1 yearold that I, too, possessed the patrilinealgenetic regard for shiny objects and bugsin my teeth. He decided then that I shouldsomeday have the speedster.

WORK IVE DONE ON THE CAR:

Polished brass! My dad and I are alsoupgrading the ignition system and sus-pension with period-correct accessoryparts and putting finishing touches on thebody rebuild that was done after the carwas damaged in an accident 20 years ago.

    WHATTHE VEHICLE MEANS TO

    ME:

Continuation of a long family tradition

involving Model Ts. I learned to driveone when I was a teenager, as did my dad

(Steve Gorthy). They dont operate like

    modern cars. And Grandpa messed

around with them with his friend RichardBurke from the time he was a boy, beforeWorld War II. The speedster and Dadstouring car are sort of two peas from thesame pod that originated from their T fas-cination and building of bugs, or speed-sters. Parades, tours and campouts withantique cars were key experiences in myfamily when I was growing up.

    FAVORITE PLACE TO DRIVE:

I havent driven the speedster in solong that Im going to have to practice up

before the parade leading off the cruise. Ilive in Portland and have no place to keepit, so it stays at my folks place in Rose-burg. I guess my favorite place to drive itis anywhere there are wide open spacesso I can get it up to road speeds (40 or 45mph!) without worrying about obstacles.

    FAVORITE CAR MEMORY:

Grandpas black standard poodle ridingin one of the bucket seats with his drivinggoggles on. The Tdecked out like a policecar, with a hand-cranked siren and Grand-

pa driving it in a Keystone Kops uniform.

process of rebuilding the pickup, my wife

became pregnant. After finding out, I wason a mission to finish and bring her andthe baby home in it. I set up a Gantt chartbased on my wifes due date and dideverything I could to stick to it. Every-thing was on target and I was in goodshape to complete my goal, when one day, about a week and half before the due date,my mom came running out to the garageto tell us my wifes water broke. A fewhours later we had a baby girl. We were soclose to being finished. We came up with aplan to get it done before she and the baby

would be released from the hospital. In themeantime, my friend Brent pulled his F-1out of storage and was getting it ready forme to use as a backup. None of this was tohappen, though. Two days after beingborn, my daughter became sick fromspinal meningitis. She was moved toSacred Heart in Eugene. The morningafter the move to Eugene, my wife becameill with meningitis. With my wife in ICUand my daughter in NICU, no one wasthinking about hot rods. A month laterthey were able to come home from thehospital. The pickup was unfinished. The

thing is, I was not disappointed in anyway. The fact that my wife and daughtercame home healthy and alive overshad-owed any disappointment I might havehad from things not going according toplan. This truck now means a lot more tome than it ever could have if these eventsdidnt happen. It will always be an icon tome of family, love and strength. Inciden-tally, shortly after she came home from thehospital, I took my wife to dinner atTollys in Oakland for her birthday on thepickups maiden voyage, and my daughterasks to go for rides in it every chance shegets.

    FAVORITE PLACE TO DRIVE:

I love to drive my pickup on the backroads of Douglas County.

    FAVORITE CAR MEMORY:

Last May my son and I drove the pickupto Salem to do some work on my parentshouse. It happened to be the weekend thatheat wave hit. It was hot and uncomfort-able, but Ill never forget my 6-year-oldson sitting on his booster seat next to mewith a wet scarf around his neck excitedto have me all to himself on a fun adven-ture.
