Faculty of Science
Yindyamarra Winhanganha
“...the wisdom of respectfully knowing how to live well in a world worth living in.”
Welcome On behalf of the Charles Sturt University community, it is my pleasure to invite you to celebrate this momentous occasion.
Graduation is an important milestone that marks the completion of your current studies and the beginning of a new chapter in your lives.
Your paths may be varied as you go on to take first jobs, promotions, research, perhaps another degree... but you all share something special. You are now lifelong members of the Charles Sturt University family.
As Australia’s largest regional university, we are proud of the continuing contributions our graduates make to communities and the world around them. You too are ready to make your mark on this world.
I encourage you all to take forward the ethos of Charles Sturt University as you embark on your future endeavours – and apply the wisdom of respectfully knowing how to live well in a world worth living in.
Dr Michele Allan
Chancellor
Our ethos
Yindyamarra Winhanganha. This is a Wiradjuri phrase meaning ‘the wisdom of respectfully knowing how to live well in a world worth living in’. It’s at the heart of everything we stand for here at Charles Sturt University.
It’s the reason we strive to create a world worth living in. It ties us to the traditional Indigenous Australians whose land we are fortunate and proud to share, and to the diverse communities across Australia that we serve. It is also the driving force behind what we teach to, share with and learn from our students.
And it embodies the mission of our university, which is to develop and spread insight and knowledge in order to create a better future – through expanding educational opportunities, delivering exemplary career-focused courses and enabling original research. Because we believe in making a difference.

Our historyOur ethos, Yindyamarra Winhanganha, has been part of the Charles Sturt University narrative from the very start. Our history dates back more than 125 years, to the establishment in 1895 of a vocational farm at Bathurst designed to give rural people access to skills and education.
Over subsequent decades, agricultural and teaching centres were set up in Wagga Wagga and Bathurst, disseminating knowledge so individuals could improve their prospects and better serve their communities.
Charles Sturt University officially became a university in 1989, merging the former Mitchell College of Advanced Education and the Riverina-Murray Institute of Higher Education, and incorporating educational facilities at Albury-Wodonga, Bathurst and Wagga Wagga.
Since then we have continued to grow, and now give students from across Australia and the world access to quality university education.
Today we have campuses in Albury-Wodonga, Bathurst, Dubbo, Orange, Port Macquarie and Wagga Wagga. We also have Charles Sturt University Study Centres in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney as well as study locations in Canberra, Goulburn, Manly, Parramatta and Wangaratta.
The man from whom the university takes its name – Charles Napier Sturt – was a British soldier who sailed to the colony of New South Wales in 1827 to pursue
his passion for exploration.
Our delivery of world-class online education is informed by more than 50 years of experience in distance learning. The majority of our degrees can now be studied online.
We have unique partnerships with a wide variety of organisations, including TAFE providers, the NSW Police Force, the Anglican Diocese of Canberra and Goulburn, the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries, Commercial Radio Australia, the Islamic Sciences & Research Academy of Australia, and universities in China and Sri Lanka.
We also have many partners around the world, enabling our students to undertake international study experiences, further expanding their horizons.

Danielle Elizabeth CROSBYInvestigation of epidemiological and molecular factors associated
with septic synovial structures in horses.
Factors associated with survival and return to function in horses with
synovial infection in an Australian context were reported, supporting
evidence-based clinical decision making. Research of molecular
techniques for the diagnosis of synovial infection provides new
information on the diagnostic performance of these methods. The
thesis contributes important knowledge regarding outcomes and
diagnostic strategies to optimise welfare in horses with synovial
infection.

Brett James BILESStrong Men: Aboriginal community development of a cardiovascular
exercise and health education program.
The study ‘Strong Men: Aboriginal community development of a cardiovascular exercise and health education program’ evaluated the impacts of a culturally appropriate exercise and health education program on risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease, and explored Aboriginal men’s experience of the program. Using a strengths-based approach, this research makes a valuable contribution to improving Aboriginal men’s health and wellbeing outcomes.
Martin David Anderson COMBSInvestigating the aetiology, pathogenesis and mitigation of perennial
ryegrass toxicity using ovine and murine modes.
This thesis evaluates the efficacy of bromide for treatment of
Perennial Ryegrass Toxicosis (PRGT). Ovine and murine disease
models of PRGT were developed and used to assess bromide as a
PRGT treatment, demonstrating that bromide is effective at reducing
both tremor and ataxia. By demonstrating its efficacy, high safety
margin and good oral bioavailability, the results of this thesis lead
to bromide receiving a patent as a therapeutic for this important
disease.
Neeta Shriram KARVEImpact of Germination on Yellow Pea Flour Functionality
This study evaluated the impact of germination on the functionality
of yellow pea flour (YPF) and its various fractions. The study
indicated that a 6 day germination period induced changes in
protein molecular weight distribution, water solubility, particle size
distribution and starch surface structure. These changes resulted
in an increase in water solubility, peak viscosity, gel strength
and decreased hydration properties. The results suggest that
modification by germination can produce changes in the functional
properties of YPF that will increase its value in the food industry.

Sunita PANDEYConservation biological control in brassica crops using Australian
native plants
Conservation biological control involves manipulating farm habitats
to promote the beneficial insect species that attack insect pests.
Laboratory and field studies showed that adult lifespan of beneficial
insects was increased by access to specific Australian native
plant species. Growing these plants close to brassica crops led to
suppressive effects on pests that potentially reduce farmers’ reliance
on pesticide application.
Dawatage Dilhani Enoka S PERERAAspergillus species associated with Australian wine grapes:
Implications of fumonisins for grapes and wine
This thesis demonstrates the production of the mycotoxins,
fumonisins by strains of some species of the fungus Aspergillus
responsible for wine spoilage. Fumonisin production was greatest
in isolates grown at 20 °C and a water activity of 0.98. Vinification
of grapes contaminated with Aspergillus resulted in some removal
of fumonisins. Levels of fumonisins further degraded during wine
storage. The findings have practical implications for sustainable wine
production.
Pongthorn PUMTANG-ONThe Investigation of Campylobacter Colonisation of Free Range
Chickens
Campylobacter is a bacterial pathogen that causes human enteric
infections often linked to consumption of contaminated poultry
products. In this study, the potential sources and genetic diversity
of Campylobacter in commercial free-range poultry farms in NSW
were investigated and potential Campylobacter vaccine antigens
were characterised. Data from this study are important to develop
strategies to prevent Campylobacter colonisation of poultry on
commercial farms.
Hamid Reza Ravan BODRheumatoid Arthritis and Risk of Infection: The Role of Disease
Modifying Anti-inflammatory Drugs
This research investigated the relationship between medications
and development of serious infections in arthritis (RA) patients.
Statistical methods were used to analyse data obtained from the
Australian Rheumatology Association Database (ARAD). 3569 RA
patients during 2001-2014, were investigated for infections. We found
that serious infection was more common in RA patients than in the
general population and anti RA medications have different impacts
on infections.
Sarah Bethany TALBOTAn Investigation of Personality in the Domestic Ferret (Mustela
putorius furo)
Animal personality research examines stable and persistent
differences in behaviour between individuals. By using different
methods to assess personality, Sarah revealed that ferrets have four
personality dimensions; Extraversion, Sociability, Attentiveness and
Neuroticism. Her research also highlighted the influence of context
on dimension scores, and has applications in tailoring ferret care and
management to personality traits in order to enhance ferret welfare.
Sarah Lesley TEAKELThe role of PGRMC1 in cell biology and pancreatic cancer
tumourigenesis and a novel mechanism for fibril formation from
Acot7 protein
Two independent studies are presented. The first study investigated
the role of PGRMC1 in pancreatic cancer cell biology using a mouse
model and involved identification of PGRMC1 binding proteins. The
second study investigated amyloid fibril formation from ACOT7
protein, which is highly expressed in the brain and plays an important
role in inflammation. The structure of Acot7 is presented and a novel
mechanism for fibril formation is proposed.
Pingyang ZHUEcological Engineering for Pest Suppression: Promoting Parasitoid
Wasps Using Nectar Plants
Ecological engineering for pest suppression uses vegetation
management to promote beneficial insects such as parasitoids,
wasps that attack pests. This thesis developed a new approach for
selecting the best types of vegetation for use in the margins of rice
fields and deciding which types of parasitoids was most effective
for. Future efforts to implement ecological engineering now have a
stronger theoretical basis and a more efficient pathway to impact.

“The main thing about veterinary science is that it’s about helping people. Working with animals is enjoyable, especially the science behind it and problem-solving. It definitely has its challenges and you need to work hard and have lots of resilience, but overall the career is very interesting and enjoyable.”

“I have an unwavering love for what I do. Rural Australia is so beautiful, yet so fragile. The people in these places
are so resilient, yet so vulnerable. I have great conviction for my cause –
to create truly sustainable and resilient food and farming systems. I want to see healthy landscapes supporting
prosperous farm businesses and vibrant rural communities. My future
depends on it, and so does the future of the next generation of farmers.”

Tammy O’Connor admits she is one of those rare and lucky people who knew early on how she wanted to make a real and lasting impact on this world.
“I studied a Bachelor of Nursing at Charles Sturt University and I knew as soon as I started that I wanted to become a midwife. To me it seemed like such an awesome career.
“After graduating I worked as a registered nurse and quickly enrolled in the Graduate Diploma of Midwifery at Charles Sturt while working in the maternity unit as a student midwife. The uni gave me a great platform to learn in a safe environment, and provided a good stepping stone into my career. That’s why, in 2016, I completed a Master of Midwifery through Charles Sturt University. It opened the door to those higher level positions, including my current role as a clinical midwifery consultant for the Western NSW Local Health District.
“The beauty of nursing and midwifery is it can take you anywhere.”
Tammy’s ‘anywhere’ turned out to be parts of NSW which rarely received the health and educational support services they required. Realising women in remote areas needed access to antenatal and postnatal care, Tammy has been instrumental in implementing an outreach maternity program.
“I believe it’s a basic human right for women to access a midwife during their pregnancy, regardless of their location. Working and living regionally provides me with the opportunity to work within the primary health care model of midwifery. It’s what I love!”
Courtney Glazebrook is creating new beginnings by treasuring the past. Passionate about Indigenous education, she is driven to make a difference in the lives of young Aboriginal children by giving them the best start to their educational journey. As the director of Towri Multifunctional Aboriginal Children’s Service, each day, when she opens the Towri doors, Courtney makes practical progress in her quest to cultivate a strong, connected and inclusive community.
“Towri encompasses health, education, community engagement and family support. Early childhood care has such great flow-on effects for families. While we’re providing care for children we’re also building platforms for parents, giving them the opportunity for employment and better health. We are building the capacity of whole communities. When children thrive so do communities.
“I have the opportunity to create tangible change. What we do, what we teach and what we advocate for directly impacts upon the community and everyone in it. I have learned, through my Charles Sturt University studies and through my career, to question different regimes of truth.
“Aboriginal people are strong. We are connected. We are progressive. And at Towri we are creating new beginnings for those who come through. That really excites me.”

Chandan Rauniyar has long been fascinated by the power of computing and the impact it can have on people’s lives.
“I have always been amazed by computers and what complex software could do. I was interested in software development and it seemed like such an awesome career – being able to develop complex computer software that is capable of transforming lives.
“So I decided to study a Bachelor of Information Technology at the Charles Sturt University Study Centre in Melbourne. I majored in software development, learning about the principles of data structures, and database design, as well as the ethics and security issues around computing. ”
With a little help from the Study Centre team, Chandan was able to step into his career at the cutting edge of software development with confidence.
“After graduating, I managed to secure a scholarship for Study Centre Melbourne’s Internship Program. With help from the careers team, I got selected as an intern at an IT company in Melbourne. As an intern, I was able to apply and develop my skills in the context of a small business. This invaluable industry experience helped me in then landing my first job as a software developer in a multinational company.”

“I want people to know the unprecedented worth of my scholarship. It went beyond monetary value. It saved my mental health. I was able to concentrate on the important things and not stress one little bit about money.
“Uni is a tough gig. Juggling course requirements and placements, a social life, a couple of jobs and the everlasting battle with Centrelink (which can become more than a little tricky at times). But with the support of Charles Sturt donors and supporters, a huge amount of that burden has been lifted from our shoulders.
“I believe that our gratitude should not only be shown with an offer of thanks, but by the way we carry ourselves through our university career – and in our actual career that will follow. Through our scholarships we’ve been given the opportunity to make the absolute best of our university experience.”
Dav Francis, Bachelor of Paramedicine student
