Graduation 2011
St. Mary’s Ryken is a Catholic
coeducational college preparatory
school community operated under
the Xaverian Brothers sponsorship,
dedicated to academic excellence and to
individualized student growth.
Mission Statement
Lately it seems that the news is filled with stories on school standardized tests and scores. While test scores can be useful indicators of learning, for us at St. Mary’s Ryken, tests are only one component of an education.
Often new faculty members are surprised by our students. One remarked that he had never encountered students this determined and dedicated
to pursuing a college degree. He had seen it in a handful of students where he had previously taught, but never like St. Mary’s Ryken, where almost the entire student body is driven and focused.
This drive is a result of the focus on character and on the whole student’s education. Yes, we encourage students to study and do well on tests, but we also encourage them to define their goals and aspirations. We begin in freshman year with students working to understand their learning style and to figure out the best practices for note taking and organization. In sophomore year, they receive the sophomore college search calendar from Mr. David Hamilton, and participate in a program to figure out what career paths they would like to pursue. They and their parents attend a Sophomore Parent Night to begin the college search process. In junior year, the curriculum includes “College Match: A blueprint for choosing the best school for you.” Mr. Hamilton ramps up the college calendar to include visits from regional college representatives and hosts another college night for students and parents. He meets with every junior for individual recommendations regarding college applications and meets again with every student in the fall semester of their senior year. The Senior Parent Night addresses applying for financial aid and scholarships.
And, because teenagers are teenagers, and need to hear from people other than their parents and teachers, we have guest speakers. This year, for example, teen sailor Abby Sunderland talked about her attempt to sail solo around the world and how her strong faith and prayer helped her when things looked hopeless. Former NFL player Levar Fisher spoke to “Stop and Think about the Consequences.”
As you see in the following pages, the Class of 2011 matured into young adults taking their gifts and achieving the extraordinary. They demonstrated a Xaverian, Catholic school community by their commitment to serving their brothers and sisters - performing over 16,000 hours of service. Their academic successes led the class to receive over $12.7 million in scholarships and financial aid to the distinguished universities and colleges to which they were accepted.
I am proud of all of them and of our St. Mary’s Ryken community. God bless.

Class of 1951Helen Hewitt ’51 writes, “The SMA Class of 1951 send our sympathies to the family of our classmate Martin Hayden, who died May 26, 2011. Martin had planned on being at our 60th reunion, but the week before, his wife, Eleanor, called and said that Martin wasn’t feeling well. We will miss you, Martin. God bless.
Our class celebrated its 60th reunion at the Cafe des Artistes restaurant on Saturday, April 20, 2011. The next day we went to the Golden Gathering [at SMR] where we attended Mass and brunch afterwards. Of the 27 classmates still living at the time, we had 20 classmates attend either one day or both. Jeanne Long Birge, of Okeechobee, Florida, was supposed to come, but she also got sick. Thomas Sheil of Camarillo, California, was given a print of a painting of a barn at Sotterly for coming from the farthest away. Caroline Wathen, our classmate who painted it, presented it to Thomas, making it all the more special.
Sister Mary Martha (Mary Ann Thompson) is now living at the Georgetown Visitation Monastery in Washington, D.C. This makes it easier for her family and friends to visit with her.”
Class of 1960Father Bill George S.J. ’60 was appointed by Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley to the Historic St. Mary’s City Commission to serve a term of four years beginning July 1, 2011.
