The bus shelter is a “nexus,“ a place of connection for people, objects and information. Such places are integral to the life of communitites because they bring people into face to face contact, transmit ideas and maintain continuity.1

As communities around the world, including UB, seek to increase utilization of public transportation, the bus shelter has increased in importance as a part of the public realm.2

This is a proposal for a transportation hub located on UB’s North Campus and a system of bus shelters located on UB’s South Campus.

Memorialization is an interesting architectural opportunity for several reasons. First, memorializing is a “function” that has existed throughout human history, possibly predating the construction of dwellings. Second, the typologies of memorials and tombs are highly varied, swayed by religious paradigms, technological limitations, and environmental factors. Third, at its foundation, memorialization is an attempt to express ephemeral concepts in physical form, a spatial and material construct of the unknown. Memorials and tombs are not for the dead, but for the living. Lastly, memorials deal with the foundational aspects of architecture: gravity and material, light and form, ground and sky.1

Chicago is home to a varied population of faiths. It is also a city of tourists of all different faiths. Thus, this proposal acts as a civic structure for tourists while at the same time supplies a place for memorial and meditation for those of any faith.

This proposal challenges the private burial, making it public by combining it with civic programs; a scientific research space and a museum space.
