Scholarships Available

Pacific Science Center is proud to offer summer camp scholarships for families in our community facing financial hardships. Scholarships provide a full week of unforgettable, hands-on science experiences for students who otherwise would not have access to this programming. For more information, please contact us at [email protected], with the subject “Summer Camp Scholarships.”

Interested in helping us support scholarships?

Scholarships are possible through the generosity of individuals, companies and foundations in our community. Donations ensure that all students, regardless of background or circumstance, have the opportunity to experiment, tinker and explore this summer. Will you invest today to ignite curious minds? As you choose the perfect camp for your child this summer, please consider adding on a gift with your registration. Contact the Development team at (206) 443-2878 or [email protected] for more information on how to support camp scholarships today.

New This Year: Sensory-Friendly Programming

This summer, Pacific Science Center will be piloting Sensory-Friendly Camps. These camps are adapted for children with Sensory Processing Disorders and/or on the Autism Spectrum. We recommend choosing a Sensory-Friendly Camp for your child if they work better in a quieter, calmer space.

Here is what you can expect from a Sensory-Friendly Camp:

• Reduction of loud sounds

• Availability of a sensory toolbox (including fidgets, headphones, timers, visual aids, etc.)

• Quiet zones or “take a break” space

• Auditory, visual and kinesthetic-tactile activities that maximize a child’s ability to relax, learn and play

• Movement activities, i.e. stretching and breathing exercises, may be incorporated into schedule

• Supported transition times

Look for the Sensory-Friendly symbol to identify these camp sessions.

Science of Sailing with CWB

Pacific Science Center and Seattle’s leading hands-on maritime heritage center, The Center for Wooden Boats (CWB), have teamed up to create a week of fun, science-filled sailing. Delve into the math and physics behind sailing and design. Investigate the convergence of wind, water and weather, as well as the cause and effect of the wind in your sails and your hand at the helm. Spend your mornings at Pacific Science Center modeling boats and conducting experi-ments, then travel to CWB to spend the afternoons sailing eight-foot wooden El Toro prams on Lake Union.

Drop off at Pacific Science Center and pick up at CWB. (Afternoon extended care not available for this session.) Students will walk with staff to CWB from Pacific Science Center.

Sailing is weather-dependent. Each day, instructors at CWB will determine whether the conditions are safe enough for students to sail. Additional activities will be arranged if sailing is not possible.

Half of each day will be spent with experienced Chess4Life instruc-tors who will use engaging lessons to make the strategic game of chess come to life. The second half of your day, you will practice reading binary code, learn how to code a strategy game, and investigate artificial intelligence to see if you have what it takes to beat a computer in a game of chess.

Trash to Treasures

Go beyond the classic reduce, reuse and recycle. It’s time to UP-cycle your trash into treasure as you dive into the sustainability of stuff. Investigate how far across the planet our trash travels and what happens when we throw stuff away. Then, take steps to reduce your impacts. Practice leaving no trace on a hike, make your own recycled paper, and turn old T-shirts into a new rug. Explore the difference between reusing and recycling and practice better op-tions than throwing things away. We can make a better world, one person and project at a time!

SERVICE LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES FOR TEENS

Science Educators in Training at All Summer Camp Locations

We are seeking responsible teen volunteers ages 14–18 to provide valuable assistance and mentoring of campers during the summer. Teen volunteers receive training, build their professional resume, meet high school service requirements and gain the rewarding experience of working with children and contributing to their community. This experience is especially valuable for teens who are interested in careers in science, technology or education. Teens must attend a mandatory training in May, and be able to commit to at least 60 hours during the summer.

How to Apply

The application process includes a written portion and recommendations, followed by interviews. The ap-plication is available at pacsci.org/volunteers and is due February 25, 2018. Interviews will take place in March, and training will be held in May.
