Grade R Activities Suggested time schedule: Morning ring Daily Between 30 and 45 minutes each day, discuss the planned activities for the day and when eating and playing time will take place. Mathematics or Language activity Choose between a Language or Mathematics activity. Do only one per day and repeat these activities. This should take around 30 minutes or less. Grade R Activities

Suggested time schedule:

Morning ring Daily

Between 30 and 45 minutes each day, discuss the planned activities for the day and when eating and playing time will take place.

Mathematics or Language activity

Ask your child to trace the lines from left to right. Ensure that your child is holding

the pencil correctly.

Activity 1:

Shapes and colours:

Ask your child to colour each number the correct colour. This activity will help your

child to develop their visual skills whilst looking for the numbers as well as

knowledge of colours.

Ask your child to connect the number to the number name and the correct picture.

Gross motor activities:

1. Throw and catch a ball

2. Hop like a bunny with two feet together from one wall to the other

3. Hop like a Froggie with bent knees from one wall to the other

4. Jump over larger objects like and empty ice cream container, ten times

5. Skip with a skipping rope for 5 consecutive jumps

6. Stand on one leg for 10 seconds (alternate legs)

7. Walk in a straight line, heel to toe

8. Do 10-star jumps

Fine motor activities:

1. Threading:

Give your child macaroni or beads with some string. Let them make a necklace in a

specific pattern.

2. Prestik:

Give your child a small piece of Prestik to put on their thumb. Press down on the

Prestik with the index finger, middle finger and so on. Do this with both hands for at

least 3 minutes at a time. You can also use playdough for this activity.

3. Playdough: (Playdough recipe attached)

Use playdough to make animals, numbers, letter or shapes. If you have child safe

scissors your child can roll snakes and cut them up using scissors.

4. Colouring in: (Colouring in pictures attached)

Any colouring in activities are good for fine motor skills. Make sure your child holds

the pencil correctly. Ask them to trace the lines on the outside and then colour in

one direction on the inside.

5. Writing:

Ask your child to write their name correctly. Capital letter for the first letter and

lowercase letter for the rest of their name. DO NOT let them write their name in all

capital letters.

Playdough Recipe

Ingredients

• 1 cup flour • 2 tsp cream of tartar • 1/2 cup salt • 1 tbsp cooking oil Olive oil or vegetable oil • 1 cup water • food coloring

Instructions

1. In a large bowl, combine all of your dry ingredients (flour, salt, cream of

tartar) and mix well.

2. Mix food coloring with your water first. Then add the vegetable oil and water

with food coloring to a large pot. Mix together.

3. Add the dry ingredients to your pot and mix well.

4. Cook over low to medium heat until the dough starts to form and becomes

dry.

5. Once it starts to form a ball together and looks fully cooked, take off the heat.

Let the dough cool first before touching.

6. Once cool, knead the dough for 5 minutes to make the dough soft.
