Semester One, Week Eleven Friday, 6th October, 2017 Principal Reflections……….. Dear Parents, World Teachers Day As a number of you may know, Thursday was World Teachers Day and is celebrated in many countries around the world. In the last few weeks here at Ecole Mondiale I have spent a significant amount of my time visiting classes in action, observing what is happening for both students and teachers. Teachers are not always aware of when I am going to visit, but part of my responsibility is to see the learning environment in action including the student response to learning and as well, monitor the quality of teaching and learn- ing. After spending the 24 years working in international schools I have clocked up many hundreds of hours observing and supporting many many teachers and I can say that we have many talented teachers in the school. Our teachers are dedicated to their students, working to balance the needs of individual students, along with the needs of the whole class and the expectations of parents. There is no one right recipe for successful teaching but a good recipe should contain many of the fol- lowing ingredients: caring, knowledge, good communication, relevance, encouragement, flexible attitude, positive attitude, respect and humour. All these ingredients have a role to play in growing young people into responsible adults who will contribute positively to our world. Interestingly this list is just as relevant to parents as well as teachers and again illustrates the importance of partnership between home and school. Semester One, Week Eleven Friday, 6th October, 2017

Principal Reflections………..

Dear Parents,

World Teachers Day

As a number of you may know, Thursday was World Teachers Day and is celebrated in many countries around the world.

In the last few weeks here at Ecole Mondiale I have spent a significant amount of my time visiting classes in action, observing what is

happening for both students and teachers. Teachers are not always aware of when I am going to visit, but part of my responsibility is to

see the learning environment in action including the student response to learning and as well, monitor the quality of teaching and learn-

ing. After spending the 24 years working in international schools I have clocked up many hundreds of hours observing and supporting

many many teachers and I can say that we have many talented teachers in the school.

Our teachers are dedicated to their students, working to balance the needs of individual students, along with the needs of the whole class

and the expectations of parents. There is no one right recipe for successful teaching but a good recipe should contain many of the fol-

lowing ingredients: caring, knowledge, good communication, relevance, encouragement, flexible attitude, positive attitude, respect and

humour. All these ingredients have a role to play in growing young people into responsible adults who will contribute positively to our

world. Interestingly this list is just as relevant to parents as well as teachers and again illustrates the importance of partnership between

home and school.

Diane Lewthwaite

K1 Reindeers

The current unit of enquiry for our K1 students - 'How the world works'

has kept them busy exploring different life cycles and broadening their

understanding of patterns in their growth cycle.

Students explored the life cycle of a frog, hen and butterfly. They inves-

tigated and examined each life cycle while researching about their de-

velopmental stages. With

the help of our guest

speaker students were

able to see a caterpillar

build upon a pupa around

itself and then turn into a

butterfly. This hands on

experience helped stu-

dents to understand the

process of change in a life

cycle. Students illustrated

and sequenced the differ-

ent developmental stages

of each life cycle.

K1 Reindeers along with K1

Penguins created dioramas on

different life cycles to demon-

strate their understanding on

our central idea – All living

things go through a process of

change.

Student initiated inquiry - Stu-

dents made amazing connec-

tions and researched on other

life cycles like the life cycle of

a human, a reindeer, a penguin

and a dinosaur. Students took

initiative by making charts for

the same and presented their

learning to their friends.

Initiatives of C to D Team

One of the objectives of the Compete to Defeat team is to raise funds for cancer patients.

Akshay Bijlani and Anisha Rayana of the Compete to Defeat team has been setting up a lemonade stall every Tuesday. Students

from PYP all the way to DP enjoy buying the refreshing cold drink at the end of the school day and contributing towards the

cause.

On the 2nd of October, the Compete to Defeat team organised a second beach cleanup. This time, students from Grade 6 to 10

also took part and the enthusiasm of the participants was remarkable. After 2 hours of working hard to clean the beach, it was an

amazing experience for the participants to see the small contribution that they have made, as students, to the society.

Students of Grade 8, Rainna Pardasani, Simran Chawla and Sanya Dhruv will be organising a stall in the MYP canteen and mak-

ing their contribution by selling Maggi to the students.

In the next few weeks, the team will also be encouraging the involvement of other grades for fundraising ideas.

We wholeheartedly encourage parents and students to financially support our cause by sponsoring/ funding our event, to make it

the best we possibly can. We also encourage parents to actively support our event by volunteering or organizing activities such as

bake sales to raise funds for the cause.

The BD Somani International School Soccer tournament

Under 14 - Boys

The Ecole team put up a spirited display at the BD Somani International school soccer tournament held on the 30 th of September.

The team was led by Ayan Maredia who looked composed in his defensive role and was surely one of the best players of the tour-

nament. Aditya Shivkumar got Ecole off to a flying start firing in 3 goals in the first match against Aditya Birla World School.

The second match against Jamnabai International School was a hard fought one with Ecole losing 1-3. The last match was a do or

die situation against the American School of Bombay. Throwing caution to the wind Ecole attacked right from the start and was

unlucky to see the ball hit the upright and side post at least 4 times in the first half. A tired looking Ecole team with no bench

strength paid the price in the second half, finally going down 4-0. One can definitely expect this team to keep improving as the

year progresses.
