INTRODUCTORY NOTES TO THE MODULE:

The PowerPoint Grade 11 Study Skills has detailed notes for each slide that will guide you through the activity. Use the

LESSON PREPERATION to guide your time frame. The following notes will be a summary of the FOUR (4) LESSONS on

Study Skills.

These lessons have also been set up with TWO flipped classroom activities where the learners prepare before class by

working through clips and homework sheets. Some of the content covered in these clips is then further discussed in the

lesson.

In the first lesson there is a card game that has been designed to help learners understand learning skills in a fun way.

This will require a bit of preparation initially but the cards can be re-used again in grade 12 to revise learning styles.

There is an additional board game that can be used for revision. This is an extra resource not included in the lessons

that could be used to show an alternate way of revising for a more right brain student.

LESSON 1:

Preparation:

Print out Activity 1, 2 & 3. Hand out at the beginning of the lesson.

Print out and cut the sets of cards for the Memory Game from the sheet entitled The Memory Game. You will need one pack of

cards per 4 players. Arrange learners in groups of 4 at the beginning of this module.

Learners should have their Notebook to make notes where relevant. This is important to allow learners to write as much as possible.

Lesson time:

1. INTRODUCTION AND SELF REFLECTION (5 minutes) (Slide 1-3)

Give learners about 5min to complete a self reflection on how efectively they learn.

This Activity is called Activity 1_Study Reflection. The second part will be done for homework.

Tell learners they will complete the second part of Activity 1 for Homework. Read https://www.wikihow.com/Improve-

Your-Study-Skills and look for a guideline to improve in the areas you struggled in.

What stood out to you? How do you unlearn bad habits when pathways have been set? Ask for some examples of bad study habits.

Use the example of traveling from home to the shop to buy bread. There are several ways we could get there but we always seem to go the same route. We have developed a nearal pathway around traveling for bread.

To change these habits we need to do the following: *intentionally choose a different route *choose to repeat this route for the next week every time you intend travelling to the shop.

3. WATCH CLIP ON SQ3R AND WORKSHEET (15 minutes) (Slide 8-12)

○ Explain what study strategies are and that the SQ3R method is an example of a study strategy.

○ Give time to write notes (summary) from ppt on while working through the slides (9-12) on Activity 2_SQ3R.

○ Allow 15min for making notes on the worksheet that should be glued into their note books for studying at a later stage.

4. MEMORY GAME AND GROUP DISCUSSIONS (20 minutes) (Slide 13-17 )

Guide the learners by the folowing question and instrucions:o Do you remember playing the memory game when you were in pre-school? This game works in a similar way.There

are a few differences so listen carefully before you get started.

Only 4 players to a game. o The cards need to be shuffled and placed face down on the table.o Each player will have an opportunity to turn over a card and look at it. They must then complete the action/ sound on the card before turning it face down again.o The cards are divided into different groups: Some require an action and others are just to look at. The action cards are the SOUND and MOVEMENT cards. Each time one of these cards is turned over, the person who turned the

card over needs to do the action or make the sound.

o When it is a player’s turn they may try and guess the location of a certain card. If they are right, they keep both cards. If they are wrong, they miss a turn.o The winner will be the person with the most cards.

Once the game is finished, the members of the group need to complete the Activity 3_checklist to see who won theindividual categories namely:o COLOURo MOVEMENTo SOUNDo VISUALo LOGICAL

Explain that the brain is different for each individual. (slide 14). If an individual can get to know what your brain prefers, you can improve:o The way you do a tasko Understanding of content in the different subjectso How to remember information for exams over a longer period of time.

Slide 15: Use the picture on this slide as a guideline and now work as a group to determine which of the memory cards would belong to left brain and which to right brain.

5. MEMORY TEST#1 (10 minutes) (Slide 18 )

critical thinking.They should take no longer than 5min.

2. CHECKLIST AND GROUP DISCUSSION (20min minutes) (Slide 25- 28)

o Start by looking at some exam writing skills.o Slide 26: Read through the list and ask learners if they have other suggestions.o Slide 27: Complete the checklist that learners can go through to see what COMMON mistakes they make in exams.

Count how many yes and no’s you have.

o Divide the list into 4 and give certain points to each group. Ask them to mind map reasons why it is so important to follow these suggestions. Explain what could go wrong if these instructions are not followed. Ask the group to create an acronym (example on next slide) on an A4 page to go up in class that would help them remember to follow exam hints. E.g. of anagram: Put these anagrams up in class.

o R - Read all instructions before starting o E - Eat a good breakfast before comingo A - Always check that everything was answeredo D - Don’t leave any questions out!

o Give each group 10min to mind map and then allow 5min for the groups to feedback to the class. Another 5min for acronym.

3. GROUP DISCUSSION (10min minutes) (Slide 29-30)

• Slide 29: Put defenitions up of the different keywords found in exam questions. Its important to understand these terms.Go through these terms in detail. After this give learners a chance to see how well they grasp the concepts

.• Slide 30: KEYWORDS- Take a few minutes to go through these terms with the learners.

Now explain to the class that they will work in groups of 6. One representative will need to come forward and put their hand into a hat to select a word. These words were pre-cut from the list of keywords. The groups will then each take about 3min to come up with one question that they get to ask another group. As the teacher, your aim is to check that the group is

using the keyword correctly in the question. Allow each group to ask one other group their question out loud and then that group discusses an answer and one representative shares the answer.

• Side 31: Explain the HOMEWORK Activity- Use this reflection form and consider your results from term 1.• Create a reflection form that can be used through the process of studying, writing and then receiving results. Explain that if

you did this for each exam it will help you improve in the future.

4. CASE STUDY (10min minutes) (Slide 32-34)

• (slide 32 & 33) Look at Activity 6 and help Ntsika by giving him some suggestions to help improve.

• Take a moment to record the following on Activity 6.• Eng: 64%• Xhosa 71%• Accounting 90%• Mathematics 60%• Life Orientation 45%• Business Studies 90%• Visual Art 90%

• Slide 34: Work through the list above. Explain that they will recieve the same reflection for themselves for homework. Ecourage them to take it seriously and see where they need to improve. Also encourage recording on a copy while studying for term 2 exams then the info would be current and accurate.

• Complete Activity 7 for Homework and ask learners to bring their assessment plan for the next lesson.

Preparation:

Set up the class for the “POST IT” activity by grouping 4 desks together and including loads of pre-cut pieces of paper the size of

a post it from newspaper OR actual post; its work really well then put up on a wall.

Make a few copies of the Weekly planner for learners that would like to try using it to plan outside of LO.

Have a few copies of Grade 11 Assessment plan available just in case learners don’t have them at school.

Possibly bring a small prize for the winning team in the critical thinking activity.

1. PROCRASTINATION SONG & POST IT ACTIVITY (15min minutes) (Slide 36 + 37)

(slide 36) Start the lesson straight away by playing this song. Its quite humorous but makes for a lovely introduction to this

(slide 37) Ask your class “What are some things that take up time in the life of your grade11 learners?”. Many of them seem

to be overwhelmed by things that take up most of their time.

o Do POST IT “Time Thief” Exercise. Explain to them that there are lots of pre-cut squares on their desks of recycled paper

or newspaper. In groups of about 4 explain how this exercise will work:

Rules:

• Write one instruction on a piece of paper, read it out loud to the group and then put the piece of paper in the middle

of the group.

• Each person needs to write something on one piece of paper that takes up their time in their day and limits time

spend on studying or school work.

• People in the group can piggyback on anothers idea eg- hockey practice and perhaps ballet.

• The aim is to fill as many pieces of paper as possible, until the ideas stop.

o After a few minutes (when it looks like most have finished the papers on their desks), ask the group to sort through the pile

of post its from the group and take out the 5 most dominant things that steal their time. Ask them to make some

suggestions on how to limit that “thing / item” from stealing time. Get them to write the suggestion on the same post-it as

the problem.

o Ask for some feedback from each group as a class. Together as a class see if you can break down what the greatest time

thief is for that class.

o The TIME THIEF for the class could end up being- sport, cell phones, sleep....

2. TEACHING AND ACTIVITY SHEET (20min minutes) (Slide 38-39)

o Work through slide on the aspect of time and studying on slide 38.

o (slide 39) Have you ever heard the saying: How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time .

o When it seems like there is an impossible task of so much to achieve, its easier to do it ONE small task at a time. This

means learning to LIST what needs to be done and prioritsing those items on the list.

o Lets take the time to do Activity 8_Prioritising. Allow learners enough time to do this activity as it sets them up to realise the

value in planning in advance.

o I have included extra copies of the Weekly planner if a learner would like to make their own copies.

o Allow time for learners to do Activity 6 in their notebooks on their own (5min). Work through answers on slide 36.

3. ANNUAL STUDY PLAN (10min minutes) (Slide 40)

o Have a copy of the Grade11 assessment plan available before this lesson and the school calender with the dates for the

year. Start this activity in class and then send them home to finish it.

1) Start by including the dates of exams, tests, formal tasks. (Use assessment plan.)

or Matric Dance.

3) Then include time allocated for studying based on your time-frame and weekly plan.

o Continue to finish this activity for homework. This planner gets done as you recieve the major dates for tests and exams

in the year and helps you transfer high priority items from your weekly planner.

o Keep it in a visible place where you are working.

4. TEACHING AND TAKING NOTES (10min minutes) (Slide 41-43)

o Start by looking at how to manage time in an actual exam setting. Work through slides 41- 43.

o Learners to take notes in their books.

5. CRITICAL THINKING EXERCISE (5min minutes) (Slide 44)

2. DISCUSSION AND TEACHING (10min minutes) (Slide 47 + 48)

Start this activity by encouraging learners to dream again.o Give the following instructions:o Take a few minutes to tell the people in your group what you dreamed at 6 years old about the career you would have one

day as an adult.o Ask if this was still their dream now for the future? If not, why not? Include what you dream for your future now?

The second part of this section requires teaching through the concept of SMART goals. This is revision from Term 1 but there is a helpful short clip that can be watched to trigger their memory.

3. ACTIVITY (10min minutes) (Slide 49 + 50)

Start working on Activity 10_Goals. Activity 10 worksheet.o Complete the `5 step method for planning & setting the goal’ and then measuring if the goal is SMART in STEP 1 &2 on

Activity 10. The teacher might need to move amongst the learners and offer assistance.o You can put the next slide on while they are working.

4. ACTIVITY (15min minutes) (Slide 51 + 52)

Start by chatting throug the example of an Action Plan on the slide.o Now allow time for learners to continue with Activity 10 and write an action plan for Study and their Health based on their

goals. Leave the FITNESS plan open at this stage.

o Health could include: o Foods that are eaten.

o Stopping bad habits like drinking or drugs.o Avoiding substances that kill brain cells.o Increased water in take and regular exercise.
