Fall 2009 will mark EnFiEld & wizEnty’s sEcond sEason as an imprint For Exciting nEw canadian Fiction, elegantly presented in collectible and affordable hardcover editions. our books will again be

printed on heavy, forest-friendly paper, and this year’s design and production quality will be higher than ever.

our 2008 season—two novels and a book of short stories—was successful. Barbara romanik’s 10 Things to Ask Yourself in Warsaw and Other Stories received excellent reviews in most of canada’s major newspapers as well as on-line. christina penner’s debut novel, Widows of Hamilton House, was a finalist for three manitoba book awards, including the prestigious carol shields winnipeg Book award. Bettina Von kampen’s historical novel, The Tristan Chord, also received excellent notices and reviews.

Enfield & wizenty’s 2009 season features a novel and a book of short fiction:

lisa pasold, a travel journalist and poet, makes her fiction debut with a compelling first novel called Rats of Las Vegas. Rats tells the story of millard lacouvy, a brilliant female poker player who works her way from depression-era Vancouver and games on the cpr, to Bugsy siegel’s las Vegas in the 1940s. The book is at once a page-turner, an in-depth character study, and a convincing historical novel.

richard Van camp is a well-known and bestselling aboriginal author of fiction and ya titles based in Vancouver. Enfield & wizenty is proud to publish his latest short fiction collection, The Moon of Letting Go and Other Stories. The stories are unified by their preoccupation with healing in First nations communities, but they are also consistently funny and entertaining, having been written for broadcast on cBc radio’s northern service.

Both authors are inveterate travellers, so expect to see them in your community sometime in the next year.

rats of las Vegaslisa pasold

millard lacouVy is a short, plain, fiercely independent girl who is also a prodigy in the male world of poker. she learns her craft in depression-

era Vancouver and then graduates to high stakes games on the canadian pacific railway. when the trains fail to satisfy either her ambition or her need for security, she goes to Bugsy siegel’s las Vegas. There her talent with cards brings her a new kind of family. But she is haunted by the handsome conman she has known all her life, and she learns that love can also be a game of chance. along the way, pasold gives us a rich and convincing historical portrait of Vancouver and Vegas in the ’40s.

praisE For RATS Of LAS VeGAS:“Millard is a fascinating character... This original, spirited novel is the work of a gifted writer.” —Lauren B. Davis, author of The Radiant City

aBout tHE autHor:Lisa Pasold is a journalist and travel writer who divides her time between Paris and Toronto. She is the author of two books of poetry, Weave and A Bad Year for Journalists.

The moon of letting go and other stories

richard Van camp

ExtEnding tHE tradition of aboriginal storytelling, richard Van camp’s new collection is eloquently and humorously optimistic. The stories in

The Moon of Letting Go celebrate healing through modern day rituals that honour his dogrib ancestry. Van camp speaks in a range of powerful voices: a violent First nations gangster has an astonishing spiritual experience, a single mother is protected from her ex by a dangerous medicine man, and a group of young men pay tribute to a friend by streaking through their northern town. The stories are set in First nations communities in the north west territories, Vancouver and rural British columbia. They have been broadcast on the cBc, and appeared in anthologies, theWalrus, Prairie fire, and other journals.

praisE For ricHard Van camp:“(Van Camp) does not stumble over nostalgia or romanticism or careless diction. He loves words – his own, his Nation’s, rock and roll’s – and slips perfect ones into atrociously profane and perfect sentences” —Lorna Jackson for The Malahat Review

aBout tHE autHor:A Dogrib (Tlicho) Dene from Fort Smith, NWT, now living in Vancouver, Richard Van Camp is an internationally renowned storyteller and best-selling author. His previous work includes The Lesser Blessed.

A HISTORY OF DISASTERS IN MANITOBA

DALE BRAWN

EVERY STONE A STORY Manitoba’s Buried History

Charles Brawn & Dale Brawn

E very Stone A Story is a collection of stories gleaned from Manitoba’s buried history. Each is illustrated with a photograph of a headstone and each describes the life, death and/or experiences of someone buried in a particular cemetery. The stories are often about the famous or infamous, but equally often they are about

people little known outside their communities, but who have done something extraordinary. The stories are grouped according to their topics: politicians, artists and sportsmen and women, crimes and scandals, special people now largely forgotten, accidents and disasters, people who have been executed, and pioneers.

Charles Brawn was born in Abbey, Saskatchewan. He moved to Brandon

in 1949 and owned and operated a business in the city. Long an avid reader with a particular interest in history and politics, he began to research and write about his home province following his retirement. He is currently researching the problems immigrant farmers in western Saskatchewan faced during the Depression. Most days he spends between four and six hours researching or writing about topics of interest, including visits to area cemeteries. Charles resides in Brandon with his wife Doreen.

Dale Brawn, Charles’ son, was born in Cabri, Saskatchewan but raised in Brandon. He

has written for the Brandon Sun, Winnipeg Tribune, Winnipeg Free Press and various national trade magazines. He was called to the Manitoba bar in 1973 and practised in Neepawa, Minnedosa and Shoal Lake before returning to university. Research completed while studying for his doctorate became the basis for his book, The Court of Queen’s Bench of Manitoba, A Biographical History 1870-1950. Dale lives with his dog and cockatoo in Sudbury, Ontario, where he teaches in the Department of Law and Justice at Laurentian University.

impact a History of disasters in manitoba

Brock Holowachuk

IMPACT coVErs tHE major floods of the red river in 1950, 1997, and 2009. The book also reports on many other disasters and near-disasters: summer tornados,

severe winter storms, the 1947 dugald train wreck, the ‘gimli glider’ of 1984, and large forest fires going back to 1920. Impact concludes with a portrait of emerging threats related to terrorism.

aBout tHE autHor:Brock Holowachuk is an Emergency Manager in Manitoba. He began researching the history of disasters in Manitoba to better inform his own work in emergency preparedness. From that interest Holowachuk emerged with a more personal picture of how Manitoba has been shaped by disasters.
