Social Media Proposals: Facebook & Twitter

FACEBOOKSample Social Media Mission Statement :

Every footprint we leave on social media will be for the Glorification of God & Edification for His people

Facebook — 72% of adult internet users/62% of entire adult population

Fully 72% of online American adults use Facebook, a proportion unchanged from September 2014. Usage continues to be especially popular among online women, 77% of whom are users. In addition, 82% of online adults ages 18 to 29 use Facebook, along with 79% of those ages 30 to 49, 64% of those ages 50 to 64 and 48% of those 65 and older. (http://www.pewinternet.org/2015/08/19/the-demographics-of-social-media-users)

Clean up/delete past groups and pages that are a) obsolete, no longer being used, or b)administrators are no longer in place. Make sure these pages and groups are no longer visible when a general search for Green Pines Baptist Church is performed.Create Guidelines for current groups and pages that wish to continue utilizing their own pages/groups. We need a master list of approved pages and groups that use the GPBC or Green Pines Baptist Church name, the administrators name and contact info, including passwords (only would be used if this person is unable to continue maintain their page/group) Guidelines need to be specific and should include what to post, what not to post and HOW OFTEN TO POST. Weekly posts would be ideal, however in some cases, such as VBS and Weekday Preschool (seasonal) exceptions would be made. New groups or pages that need to use the church name must be approved before they are created, then after approval all info would be placed on a master list of approved pages and groups. A form/application may need to be created to hand out for anyone wanting to create a new group or page for a church ministry, this form could submitted for approval from the Elder Board and Pastor Jarrod. Our main church Facebook page/group should be the only one to use the phrase “Green Pines Baptist Church” at the beginning of the page name. Other groups will need to put the church name or GPBC at the end of their title (ex. GEMS Green Pines Baptist Church, or Cave Quest 2016 Green Pines Baptist Church) The goal of this is not to make it difficult to find our church groups but to make our main church page easily accessible to those seeking us out for more information. Exceptions to this rule: Green Pines Weekday PreschoolAll pages and groups should be posting weekly, about church activities, events and any other happenings at our church. Coordinator would need to monitor all groups and pages are posting on a weekly basis. There should be only 1 or 2 people authorized to upload and post pictures of members to FB groups and pages. We have to make sure that the each person visible in the picture has a photo release giving permission for their picture to be posted online, especially when children will be photographed

FACEBOOK (CONTINUED)Titles for devotionals with easily recognizable names such as every Monday morning a short scripture or video shared with us from Pastor Jarrod ”Afterthought with Pastor Scott” Viewers of our FB page will be drawn to this every Monday for extra thoughts on Sunday mornings sermon, seekers will see our Pastor, hear our Pastor and learn from our Pastor without having to enter our doors. Blogs OR Twitter accounts would be a great thing to have in place for our leadership so we can link them up to the page. This would give visitors a look at our Pastor, our staff and our leadership. If we include a Video weekly of our leadership, even a simple short invitations from members to the community for certain special services like Mother’s Day or Easter could be copied and posted to members FB page too, for added views then this would make our thread attractive with posts, pictures and video. Additional Training/Support ToolsPRO CHURCH TOOLS is a something we could utilize to help train, teach and prepare our leaders and volunteers on how social media can be an effective tool for our church. $35 month.

Page 4: GPBC Social Media FB

A training meeting or information session on new guideline for our church and social media would be a great way to ‘get the word’ out about what our plans are for the future of this ministry. All of the guidelines are not to discourage the groups or pages, but to help them grow as a whole…to benefit our church and to promote our church and our God to those seeking us out. Global Knowledge, Kevin’s employer, offers 2 training course, live instructor lead virtual classes for certification in social media, for business purposes. We would be able to get a small discount on these classes through Kevin, which range in cost from $1,500 to $2,000 per person. Although it may not be necessary at this time, this maybe a good option for us a later time, if and when a social media coordinator is nominated and put in place. These classes are mainly for brand imaging and product promotion, which could be easily applied to our church. I have reached out to several Baptist conventions and Lifeway for help in finding online or other social media training for church leader. As of today, April 10 I have not found 1 social media training event, class or otherwise. I have a few emails sent to other churches for their advice on where to get training, so I am hopeful, we may get a few leads. There may need to be a Social Media Coordinator for all approved pages and groups for several reasons: if someone is the only administrator and they find another church, then we are back to having multiple groups with no way to delete them. If there is an appointed person that has access to this information, this should not be an issue anymore. Also, if for some reason there has been no activity on the page or group for a while, the main administrator can post something or update as needed. If there is a question about content the Coordinator would be responsible for approving or redirecting posts, pictures, keeping updated photo releases, training and making sure each administrator is aware of guidelines, and updating/keeping their pages attractive and welcoming. The Social Media coordinator could be responsible for updating and maintaining the main church pages, groups, blogs etc., but leaders of specific groups would still have access and control over their own page, and only go to the Coordinator for specific need or guidance.

TWITTERTwitter — 23% of all internet users/20% of entire adult population

Some 23% of all online adults use Twitter, a proportion that is identical to the 23% of online adults who did so in September 2014. Internet users living in urban areas are more likely than their suburban or rural counterparts to use Twitter. Three-in-ten online urban residents use the site, compared with 21% of suburbanites and 15% of those living in rural areas. Twitter is more popular among younger adults — 30% of online adults under 50 use Twitter, compared with 11% of online adults ages 50 and older.

Twitter would be a great avenue for our staff and leaders to use to connect to other church members and our community as well as be a link to our Facebook page. Twitter has a younger audience than Facebook. Devotionals, short invitations to special services can be easily shared on Facebook from Twitter. I believe Green Pines would benefit from sending ‘tweets’ (Twitter messages), from our members (our birds) we are Green Pines aren’t we? And ….where do tweets come from…the birds in the trees…Green Pine Trees to be specific This younger generation will be more inclined to respond to and receive dialogue from Twitter than from Facebook, where we post events and other ‘housework’ Twitter would be the arena for each leader, staff to have their separate account and then maybe weekly or monthly rotate popular posts or video straight to Facebook and vice versa. We can share these individual Twitter accounts on our church website where we now have a description of each church staff member.

Discussion

1. What are our goals for Social Media? Who do we want to reach? Why?

2. Social Media Team, Media Ministry Team,, Communications Coordinator. Do we want to simplify and place all media, in this group…or JUST social media….how would continuity be affected?

3. Understand how we can better utilize Facebook, Twitter. Clean, clear clutter and start action plan for each one, one at a time, but in a timely manner.

Page 6: GPBC Social Media FB

4. Get the word out about our new social media campaign. Inform congregation of pages, websites, Twitter accounts. Possible informal training session for those that need help connecting to various groups including those in leadership that would need to be connected through blogs or twitter accounts. The more our own members and leaders post and are active, the more of our community will be reached, the more traffic our pages and groups will be exposed to. ENCOURAGE members to open dialogue and sharing !!

5. Track our progress on Hootsuite or Buffer. These online tracking tools will guide us as to what is a hit and what is a miss for our sites, based on online traffic.

6. Should certain administrators keep their groups closed to the public, if they are using the church name in the title… for example GEMS or First Love Woman’s Ministry, posts are for members only.

7. Will this social media point person be responsible for updating and maintaining the main church website? Updates from Twitter and Facebook can be included on the website.

8. The City for our website could eventually replace GP Connect for some announcements and prayer requests.

OPENCHURCH.COMOpen Church is an intersection of people, resources, and research. We do two simple things.First, we create and manage a database directory of people, resources, and data. We cannot collaborate without awareness of what others are doing. The database directory’s role in the Body of Christ is like a digestive system extracting nutrients.Second, Open Church increases access to the database by creating common approaches to cataloging, licensing, archiving, distribution, and technology. In the Body of Christ, these standardizations are like a cardiovascular system transporting the extracted nutrients to the parts of the body that will benefit from them. Our goal for 2015 is to develop the database directory, create new resource licenses, and solidify a team to lead the initiative and train volunteers.
