Dates to Remember
What a great vaca on! I can certainly recommend a two week bike/ car holiday circumnaviga ng the south island of New Zealand. Julia and I were overwhelmed by the beau ful scenery and wonderful hospitality. However all vaca ons no ma er how lovely come to an end and it is back to work for the final exci ng term of 2019.
A big thank you to Salvatore Castelnuovo (Sam) our extremely talented maintenance supervisor for all of the work that he coordinated and completed during the vaca on. One of the challenges that we face with a school as large as ours is the rota onal usage of the grassed areas to prevent such areas becoming “dustbowls” through overuse. Current water restric ons has also nega vely impacted on the maintenance of our beau ful grounds. However we are fortunate that we have the mul purpose courts, addi onal asphalt areas as well as the “fixed equipment” and “quiet area” to u lise when required. We are also in the process of installing synthe c turf adjacent to the hall. Although this project has taken longer than an cipated to complete, we look forward to having another excellent mul purpose facility available for our children.
A big thank you to Mrs Sheehan and Mrs Findlay our School Administra on Officers on comple ng an applica on for twenty thousand dollars Federal Government assistance for the comple on of another landscaping project that has been proposed for a considerable length of me. The upgrade of the current “quiet area” adjacent to the “fixed equipment” will certainly enhance a very popular area of the school where our K‐2 children gain so much enjoyment playing in the dirt and on the rocks of the exis ng creek beds. Ian Jackson, from ISCAPE, the original landscape architect for the area was engaged to design conceptual plans for the area which

were accepted. We look forward to the Asset Management Unit selec ng contractors to commence work on this very exci ng project. Also during the vaca on addi onal murals were a ached to the Pee Wee Park end of the Kindergarten Building further enhancing the beauty of all school. Ms Harper the very talented ar st responsible is to be congratulated on her wonderful artwork and has been engaged to beau fy our Primary and Infant’s toilets by pain ng the toilet doors with artwork that will include Aboriginal Mo fs. This work will be undertaken a er the AMU completes extensive renova ons/ upgrades of school facili es over the Christmas vaca on.
Immediately prior to the last vaca on the school was involved in the Valida on process for which we had been preparing for a number of years. Mr Sparke who led the Valida on team has prepared an extensive overview of the process later in the Bulle n.
Mr Sparke welcomes any parent who would like more specific informa on on the valida on process to contact him personally. The External Valida on Summary is available on the school website and can be viewed by clicking on the link adjacent. The Gordon West Valida on Team would like to acknowledge the incredibly professional manner in which this review was conducted by the Principal School Leaders, Merilyn Jenkins from the Miranda Educa on Office and Drew Green substan ve Principal from Kyogle Public School on the far North Coast of NSW. The review was very produc ve and acknowledged the tremendous work of the Gordon West school community and iden fied areas where we can do be er. Like any successful business it is essen al that the
school never rests on its laurels and is always looking to
improve its performance.
Our whole school started Peer Support sessions last week. These will run every Wednesday throughout Term 4.
The children are par cipa ng in a new module, Moving Forward which focuses on resilience. Resilience is the capacity to adapt in challenging situa ons. Our Peer Support sessions will provide opportuni es to develop and prac se strategies to enhance wellbeing. Children will learn to iden fy their quali es and strengths, develop skills, respond with a range of strategies and seek support when faced with challenges.
You might like to discuss with your child what they can do to help them take an ac ve role in Peer Support. The sessions are lead by Year 6 students under the supervision of classroom teachers. If you have any ques ons, please feel free to contact Mrs Sheldon, Mrs Yeow or Mrs Waugh.
