Master Plan for our Yard Spaces You may have noticed that our flying fox on the wooden play ground is broken. There are also other areas around the school that desperately need a face lift. A group of teachers and parents are going to create a draft plan for

how we want our yard spaces to be in the future. We will keep you informed through the newsletter.

Car Parking in the Middle of Hampton Street South

PLEASE DO NOT PARK IN

THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD TO WAIT TO COLLECT OR DROP OFF YOUR CHILD.

Unfortunately people are putting their own children and the children of other families at risk. We understand, that during winter people like to stay dry and minimise the distance for them or their child to walk. However, everyone getting to and from school safely has

to be a priority. So… how about you park a street away and walk with an umbrella to school. Provide your child with a raincoat. Thank you in anticipation for your cooperation.

Lost Property

Why have I laid out our latest unnamed good quality lost property??? It astounds me the amount of lost property accumulated each week. Here is what our lost property box looks like after three days.

Please reinforce with your child the importance of taking care of their property. Thank you.

Inquiry Learning Staff are committed to using teaching and learning approaches which promote Inquiry Learning. This week 6 staff members will be attending training with Kath Murdoch on ‘Leading for Inquiry Learning’. Kath is an Internationally renowned consultant. Reading her book, The Power of Inquiry, provides a sense of why we value this approach. Here is an exert from the book: “How can we create learning environments that cultivate

curiosity and grow young people as confident, capable and creative inquirers? How can we ensure that our teaching nurtures rather than diminishes the sense of wonder with which we are all born? How can we become better inquirers as we teach? How can we help our students grow as thinkers, collaborators, self-managers, communicators and researchers as they inquire?” Attending this training will build on Goodwood Primary’s work over many years and add value to our work. Catherine Murch’s role as Assistant Principal Teaching and

Learning supports our work in this area. Kind regards

Deb Brassington, Principal

Friday 4 August Wear a Beanie to school day

Students are encouraged to wear a beanie to school and please bring a gold coin donation. Money raised will go

directly to the Hutt Street Centre for the “Walk a Mile In My Boots” fundraiser.

Friday 11 August Walk a Mile in your Boots Fundraiser

Classes 3M, 8M, 19E and 12C Students who have registered to participate in this event

will be meeting at school at 6.30pm. They will catch a tram to the city and commence the fundraising walk from

Victoria Square. Detailed information will be sent home to the relevant

classes.

Inquiry Based Learning Each term different classes work with me for Inquiry Based Learning. This term it is the Year 3 and 3/4 stu-dents turn. My role in this, is to plan collaboratively and teach alongside teachers, model formative and summa-

tive assessment strategies and to model pedagogy. The year 3-4 teachers have developed units of work based on the cross curriculum priority ‘Sustainability’. Their inquiry lessons will focus on one aspect of this. Ms Swinburne’s class have a Science focus [energy] and Janet and Bron-wyn’s classes have a Geography focus. In conjunction with the content learning students are developing their skills: · to participate in a community of inquiry · in metacognition · in critical and creative thinking

· in collaboration · in giving and receiving feedback Catherine Murch

Online Safety

SAPOL Visit I organised a visit from SAPOL representatives, Janet and Kerry, to talk to students in year 5, 6 and 7 about online safety. The presentations were tailored for the age groups and addressed the following aspects: Apps and age limits Accessing sexualised content ‘Grooming’ Privacy Sharing information Legalities Rights and responsibilities Online bullying. Some of the information was quite eye-opening for both students and teachers and stimulated some deep thinking about our online behaviours. The most important messages given were: The internet is a great place but you need to know how to protect yourself If it doesn’t feel right, don’t do it and let an adult know Think before you press send The apps students are using are for 13 year olds and above You can be charged and arrested with a criminal offence from the age of ten Teachers have a legal responsibility to report inappropriate and offensive online behaviour to

police.

If your child is in year 5, 6 or 7, it might be a good opportunity to continue the conversation at home. I am planning to organise a parent session either later this year or early next year and hope that you can all attend! Below are two useful links. They have information about the apps students are accessing.

Technologies in Term 3

Digital Citizenship This term, classes in Technologies will work on concepts of Digital Citizenship (including cyber safety, netiquette, and online sharing and collaboration). These ideas will be integrated into our learning across the term, using a platform called Edmodo. Edmodo is a free and secure learning network for teachers, students, and schools. It provides a safe way for teachers and students to connect, share content, access homework, participate in discussions, manage due dates, and receive class information. Unlike other social networks such as Facebook and Twitter, Edmodo is a tool strictly for educational purposes and we will be enforcing the following guidelines: Students will be required to use appropriate grammar instead of texting language Edmodo does not allow private student-to-student messaging - the site will be used to discuss school-related content only, and the teacher will monitor all Edmodo activity. No put-downs or sarcasm toward another’s ideas. All school rules and consequences related to bullying and harassment apply. Edmodo is accessible to Teachers, Students and Parents at any time on any device through the Web. Parents are able to view what their child shares on Edmodo through a unique child code. This will be sent home with your child when their account has been created. You can learn more about the Parent Account by going to the Help Center at support.edmodo.com and clicking “Parent Resources.” Reception to Year 2 students Students in the early years will explore data and systems this term. They will learn to recognise and utilise patterns in data and explore ways to sort and represent data. Students will recognise and explore digital and design systems. They will undertake and share related design challenges. 4M and 5M As well as continuing our work in Digital Citizenship, Technologies for 4M and 5M will incorporate design challenges that integrate with work that the classes are doing in IBL around sustainability.

We will also be investigating concepts of data and systems. 6M This term, we will be exploring the world of energy, force and motion using the LEGO WeDo robotic kits. We will use the devices to learn about digital systems and peripherals. 8M and 19E The 4/5 classes will be exploring concepts of data and systems

through digital, interactive worlds. This will involve a design challenge to access the virtual reality. 3M will work on knowledge of systems, data and skill development with technology tools this term. Using a virtual learning platform, they will examine the main components of digital systems and how they connect together to form networks to transmit data. They will acquire and store different types of data, and use a range of software to create information from that data. 11C will complete our 'smart home' automation challenge this term. We will also delve into the world of data, unpack what it is and what we can do with it. This will involve investigating how digital systems represent text, image and audio data in binary. 12C We will also delve into the world of data, unpack what it is and what we can do with it. This will involve investigating how digital systems represent text, image and audio data in binary. 12C will also work on skill development with technology tools and will begin a project showcasing their skills at the end of the term. Great Achievements

Making Strong Connections Preschool to School…. Last Wednesday the Junior Primary students got together with the Preschool children to have a catch up. The Junior Primary students ran a mock assembly to show the preschool children how assemblies are done at school. We sang the National Anthem and learnt how to sit quietly and listen to people speaking in the microphone. We also sang a few sing-a-long songs. It was great to work together.

Crow support National Tree Day What a fabulous opportunity for Goodwood Primary School and Preschool to meet the Crows Team and plant trees and shrubs to help our school environment.

Initiative Alive and Well at Goodwood Primary

Congratulations to James W and Patrick E, with assistance from Henry M and Braithan M on the successful first day of the card club! These boys came up with an idea to run a card club to teach younger students and provide a space for experienced players at lunch time Thursdays. They negotiated possible supervision with Ms Swinburne, submitted a written proposal to Ms Murch and organised start up sets of cards for new players. They even had sign in sheets and extra resources to support the activity. Their first session was well attended and it looks like it might grow! Well done boys you have demonstrated excellent initiative, organisation and collaboration. Ms Murch

GOODWOOD HOCKEY NEWS Congratulations to the 7 Goodwood Primary School students who represented the Adelaide South East zone at the SAPSASA Hockey carnival held in the second to last week of Term 2.

All GPS players thoroughly enjoyed playing in their 10 games throughout the week, and Ginger and the boys get to try out for these teams again next year.

The boys (L-R Mack D, Josh B, Finn J and Jaime S) finished 8th in their Division 2 competition.

The girls (L-R Mia A, Ginger F and Sophie G, plus a few happy team members) won their last game in a very exciting finish to the tournament, scoring a short-corner goal after the full-time whistle had blown (yes, this can happen in hockey!). This win secured their equal 2nd place in the Division 1 competition, a fantastic result.
