Congratulations to Tiago Rainho During the holidays Tiago entered the Aeroplane Jelly

Paper Plane Design Challenge by submitting a 90 second video showcasing his paper plane which he called AeroSpace Jelly 2. His video can be seen on the Aeroplane Jelly Website. http://aeroplanepaperplanes.com.au/entries Gallery of entries which includes Tiago’s video (scroll down first page) The videos were judged by Dylan Parker of Paper Pilots, the inspiration behind the film Paper Planes as well as representatives from the sponsoring companies, Aeroplane Jelly and Clever Patch.

Tiago has been awarded the best plane in the Prep to Grade 2 category or SA/NT. Yahooooooooooo! Dylan said this about Tiago’s creations: “SUCH AN AMAZING ARRAY OF PLANES! You’ve certainly studied your stuff. This video does a great job of showing your folding skills in a way that means you had one of the most original planes. We thought you might have been a scientist trying to sneak into the competition.” As Tiago’s entry was the best across all ages in your state his entry was also voted the best paper plane for SA/NT,

which means he won a number of prizes including a trip for two to Sydney to compete in the Aero plane Jelly's Great Paper Plane Fly-Off. Tiago will be representing our state and take part in some fun tasks set by Dylan and James from The Paper Pilots Tiago will be asked to perform the below two challenges: Challenge 1: two throws of your paper plane to showcase 'distance' Challenge 2: two throws of your paper plane to show 'time in the air' We wish Tiago all the best for this event. We applaud him

for taking the initiative. I look forward to seeing you around the school this term, maybe we will meet up as we walk to school on Friday 19 May or at one of our wonderful assemblies? Ahh!! Our quiz nights are always great fun so Saturday 17 June, a night to note in your diary, see you there! Kind regards

Deb Brassington Principal

Last term the Reception and Reception/Year One classes participated in Inquiry Based Learning with Catherine.

The students were learning about their Personal History and lots of information was gathered from home. Students were asked to find out about themselves and present it in timelines, museum boxes and interviews. We hope that families had interesting discussions with each other because the oral component is really important for Historical Literacy. At the end of the term students invited their families to come and share their learning journey. Thanks for such a great turn out, the students love these special occasions! Have a look at all the fabulous photographs.

Walk Safely to School Day 2017

National Walk Safely to School Day (WSTSD) is on Friday 19 May 2017 (Term 2 Week 3). Now in its 18th year, it is a campaign and annual event when all primary school children, their parents and carers are encouraged to walk and commute regularly and safely to school. It is a community event seeking to promote Road Safety, Health, Public Transport and the Environment. Research shows that less than half of Aussie kids walk, ride or scoot as their usual way of getting to or from school despite this being one of the easiest ways for us to get more activity into our day. Being physically active on the way to or from school is linked with numerous physical, social and cognitive benefits for children so it is important we encourage, support and facilitate this behaviour. The Objectives of WSTSD are: To encourage parents and carers to walk to school with primary school age children To promote the health benefits of walking and create regular walking habits To help children develop vital road crossing skills and ensure children up to the age of 10 years

hold an adult's hand when crossing the road To help children develop the vital road-crossing skills they will need as they become mature

pedestrians To reduce car dependency and traffic congestion To reduce the level of air pollution created by motor vehicles To promote the use of public transport On Friday May 19th we want to see as many Goodwood Primary School families not just walking but also riding or scooting to school, however, it is important first that you know the safest way to get there and if there are any ‘tricky’ spots along the way you need to be mindful of. To help plan your journey go to the ‘Where Is’ website (http://www.whereis.com) and search for ‘Goodwood Primary School’ and then print out the best map that shows how you will get to school— there will also be printed maps available from the front office for families who do not want to create their own. Then before WSTSD it would be great if as a family you head out into the community and mark out on your map: The safest route to take when walking, riding or scooting to school, making sure to use

designated pedestrian crossings where possible; Easy to spot landmarks that help where you are on the route; Where other Goodwood Primary School families live, you could pick people up on the way and

travel to school as a group; Any high traffic areas where extra care needs to be taken; and Any ‘unsafe’ areas that we as a school community could address in the future (extra

information can be included in the comments section on the back of the map). For those families who cannot incorporate walking, riding or scooting into their whole journey to school we encourage you to park the car or get off of public transport a few extra blocks away and still walk, ride or scoot at least part of the way to school and make sure you mark this journey on your map too, including where you parked the car or at which transport stop you got off at. On the Friday morning all students who walk, ride or scoot to school at least part of the way to school will receive a piece of fruit and a participation sticker. We also encourage all families to bring their maps with them on the morning and hand them in to members of the Student, Learning and Wellbeing Committee who will collate them all and then feedback to families some of the common routes used. We would then encourage families to reach out to others who walk, ride or scoot along their route (or close to it) as it may be a way for more students to get to school actively as part of a group. We hope to see as many of you as possible on Friday May the 19th walking or riding or scooting safely to school, but even more importantly that this becomes part of your daily routine where possible. Student Learning and Wellbeing Committee.
