Good News from CVAD 15 December 2019 

 Department of Design 

 Students:  Two Interior Design sophomore students’ work were showcased in the full harvest exhibition. Their work is from an assignment from the Interior Design faculty Bill Morgan’s class. Students select a meaningful object, photograph it as it undergoes change or mutation, and then create a habitable space by using multiple modalities such as sketching, model building, and orthographic projection.  Shaimaa Kodhr –Wafer City (graphite, foam board) Wafers remind me of my childhood in the way of how I used wafers as buildings and stack them at the top of each other to get different building shapes. My project focuses on the layers of the wafers and how the taste differs from the inside (chocolate) and the outside (biscuit). From that point,  I started constructing the idea of having a space that looks and feels different from the outside and the inside. Eroding the base and sides reflects the torsional force needed to access both inside and outside simultaneously.  Devon Moore – Value of Light (graphite, styrene, foam board) An exploration of light as duality. Light simultaneously reflects and receives, it is both positive and negative, sacred and profane. It infers lightness and darkness, knowledge and ignorance. This project signifies growth through the control and manipulation of the light source, using contrast and the linearity of shadows to imply movement.

 UNT Adjunct Professor and Alumnus Justin Archer is having a solo exhibition, All is Becoming, at Ro2 Art: The Cedars, 1501 S Ervay, Dallas, TX. The exhibition runs from January 12 – February 10. The reception was on January 12.  Ana Esteve Llorens

An article about this exhibition was in the Dallas Morning News, “At the MAC's new Cedars gallery, a group of Texas artists declare their Independence.” This group exhibition brings together Texas‐based artists Helen Altman, Alicia Eggert, Letitia Huckaby, Liss LaFleur, and Leslie Martinez. How does history inform the present and shape how we view the future? Artists explore the overarching concept of time and the self in relation to society. Works in the exhibition reflect on issues of our times: identity, social dominance, ecological impact, and consumerism.    Liss LaFleur 

  

 Tutti Frutti, the first solo exhibition at Galleri Urbane, 2277 Monitor St, Dallas, Texas, showing from January 12 – February 16, 2019, features Liss LaFleur, in an immersive multi‐media installation anchored by blown glass objects and a new film.   Inspired by Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay “Notes on ‘Camp’,” and the “fruit machine,” a military device used by the U.S. and Canadian government during the Cold War to detect and purge LGBT individuals, this exhibition examines the semiotics of fruit in relation to the queer body.  Liss LaFleur 

     Liss LaFleur was chosen to represent the state of Texas in the Treat America Project from January 9 ‐ January 13 at Foley Gallery, 59 Orchard St., New York, NY. The reception was Wednesday, January 9th 6‐8pm. Juried by Jon Feinstein of Humble Arts Foundation and Jamie Martinez of ArteFuse, Treat Gallery put together their most ambitious project to date.  

 Liss LaFleur will participate in an exhibition at OSNY Project Space, 417 W. 57th St., New York, NY from February 8 ‐ February 17. The opening reception will be on Friday, February 8th 7‐10pm.  Students:  Evan Beck  UNT Sculpture major, Evan Beck is currently an Intern Artist Fellow at Franconia Sculpture Park in Franconia, Minnesota. His work was featured on a KARE 11 News story which you available here, "Franconia Scuplture Park."  Taylor Barnes 

 The Denton Black Film Festival and UNT on the Square are pleased to announce an exhibition by fibers artist Taylor Barnes titled My Genesis, January 15 – February 14, 2019. The exhibition is part of the fifth annual Denton Black Film Festival (January 23 – 27, 2019). A reception will be held on Wednesday January 23, 2019, 6:30‐8:30 p.m., with remarks at 7 p.m.  Christian Rodriguez and Juan Cruz

Susan Moore’s exhibition Sensations of Indulgence is showing between January 14 ‐ March 1, 2019 at the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts, 801 Third Corso, Nebraska City, NE 68410. There will be a Gallery Talk on February 21, 5:00pm.     

Morgan Everhart BFA Drawing & Painting (2013)    

   Morgan Everhart’s exhibition Flowers for my Failure is showing between January 25 – March 31, 2019 at the Longwood Center for Visual Arts, 129 N. Main Street, Farmville, VA 23901.  Skillfully balancing on the edges of abstraction and traditional still‐life, Morgan Everhart’s Flowers for my Failures is an introspective exhibition that seeks to cultivate feelings and memories of people, places, and experiences through painting.   Blake Weld MFA Photography (2012)

Jess Peri BFA Photography (2012)

Jess Peri’s exhibition, Jess Peri: Accuracy Test will be open between January 16th‐ February 10th, 2019 at SRO Photo Gallery Lubbock, Texas. In Accuracy Test, Jess Peri combines Global Positioning System (GPS) technology and photography to produce images that indicate traces of memory and material presence.  Jason Romero BFA Fibers (2009)

Texas Fashion Collection  

Since the start of FY2019, the TFC has served 1195 people.   

TFC director Annette Becker was interviewed by Osher Lifelong Learning Institute member Susan Supak, with the published podcast episode published here.   

The TFC and the Onstead Institute, both part of CVAD, met with Denton Independent School District high school art and theater teachers to present their new project, the Wandering Wardrobe.  Currently in the piloting phase, this project will bring historic garments into DISD classrooms and provide teachers with design and social history study materials and lesson plans. 

The Peninsula Fine Arts Museum in Newport News, VA, featured seven of the TFC’s evening ensembles in the exhibition “Adorn,” which was on view through January 6. 

The Lyndon Baines Johnson Presidential Library in Austin, TX, featured one of the TFC’s 1910s bathing costumes in the exhibition “Get in the Game,” which was on view through January 13. 

The Kimbell Art Museum in Ft. Worth, TX, featured four of the TFC’s Cristobal Balenciaga ensembles and hats in the exhibition “Balenciaga in Black,” which was on view through January 6.  The exhibition was drawn exclusively from the Balenciaga Archives and the Palais Galliera, both in Paris, with the only additions to the original Parisian exhibition being from the TFC. 

The San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts in San Angelo, TX, features seven of the TFC’s lingerie and day ensembles in the exhibition “Inside Out,” which is on view through March 24.  TFC director Annette Becker also wrote an essay for the exhibition catalogue. 

The Cornell University Costume and Textile Collection in Ithica, NY, features one of the TFC’s day ensembles originally worn by Ann Richards during her inauguration in the exhibition “Women Empowered: Fashion from the Frontline,” which is on view through March 31 and has received national press coverage. 

A recent impact report from the Galleria Dallas shared that the exhibition “Age of the Supermodel,” which was created through a collaboration between the TFC and 1814 Magazine (a fine art photography publication), had over 15,000 visitors and a social media reach of over 150,000 people, which does not include the advertisements through billboards, local, regional, and international press.  These were all funded by the Galleria Dallas and featured at minimum the UNT/TFC official logo. 

The TFC is supporting the South Dallas Cultural Center for their upcoming exhibition of fashion by Pucci Lisenbee.
