Miller Chemical & Fertilizer Co., Baltimore, -Md., is marketing a spray-type liquid mulch, Soil Guard, that is said to give excellent control r

of erosion and seed protection on any area where gTass is grown. The product, formerly known Si

as Soil-Set, is a liquid elastrnnietric emulsion manufactured as a concentrate, It is diluted in water, sprayed, and forms a web-like film on the surface of newly seeded soil. Besides keeping the seed intact it holds heat and moisture in the soil. " A gallon of Soil Card covers 300 to 600 square feet, depending on the degree of slope and ex-pected water runoff. Several courses have used the product in erosion control. It is non-flam- „ mable, non toxic and completely safe with plants ^ and animals, according to the manufacturer.

Big Turnover in the A m a t e u r

In the 62 years the National Amateui * has been played, there has been a remark-ably large turnover in participants, accord-ing to the USGA. The annual average has * been about 48 per cent. Of 5,469 match play spots in the Championship, since it« was started in 1895, 2,619 have gone to newcomers and 2,850 to veterans. The ^ turnover, according to Bill Inglish of t h e Oklahoma City Daily Oklahoman who dug up the figures for the USGA, is due to the fact that players have to take time off " from their jobs and pay their own expenses in getting to the Amateur site. It hasn't* always been convenient for them to do one or the other or both.
