GOLF AND GRATITUDE Rose Hill hosted its 27 th Annual Golf Tournament at Bloomfield Hills Country Club in June. We are grateful to the 115 golfers and our generous sponsors who helped raise $108,000 in support of Rose Hill’s Financial Assistance Program. A special thanks to our very generous Tournament Sponsor, Jeannine Gundle. This year, in addition to the 18-hole round, eight golfers were selected to participate in a $1 Million Hole-in-One Shoot-Out afterward. Even though no one shot a hole-in-one, the golfer who was the closest to the pin was awarded a cash prize of $2,500. Based on feedback, we plan to reprise this exciting competition and format at next year’s tournament on Monday, June 10, 2019. Of course, we hope you’ll plan to join us!! We are also profoundly grateful to the residents who spoke at the evening dinner. Kate began by explaining why she agreed to be there: I’ve been a long-time resident at Rose Hill. I’ve been to many hospitals, nonetheless, Rose Hill was the first to diagnose me with schizophrenia and get the disease under control. I’m here tonight to share how great Rose Hill has been to me and hopefully open your eyes to my disorder.” She went on to talk about her many hospitalizations, the other treatment programs she had been to, and her experience at Rose Hill. She outlined the aspects of Rose Hill that were important to her recovery which she summed up as “the fantastic work done by the staff and doctors.” She concluded by telling golfers and guests, “Rose Hill has done amazing things for me. I’m not the same person standing here today that I was even five months ago. If you were to look at me four years ago, you might have thought this girl is going down the wrong path, and I was. I’ve changed so much and, with the support of my family and treatment at Rose Hill, there’s no telling how far I could go.” FIRST PLACE: Tim and Susan Lucken; and (far right) Board member, John Boukamp III with his son John. Guest Speakers: Kate and Marta Photo by: Sally Gerak As is often the case with the residents at Rose Hill, Marta’s experiences echoed Kate’s: the numerous hospitalizations, the other programs and, finally, success in Rose Hill’s treatment program. Marta told guests that since she came to Rose Hill, her medications have been stable and, with continuous support, she has not needed to be hospitalized. She summarized her experience by saying “Rose Hill has been amazing. They have worked with me through my symptoms when I was not stable. They never gave up on me. I always felt supported.” Then she added: “My sisters have been my biggest advocates, they have been by my side through it all. I want to say thank you to my sisters and to Rose Hill. [Editor’s note: Marta’s two sisters and mother were among the dinner guests and they, too, expressed their gratitude to Rose Hill for the treatment their sister/daughter has received at Rose Hill.] When the ladies finished speaking, the audience gave them a standing ovation. At that moment, golfers from the winning team spontaneously stepped forward and, as a gesture of gratitude, presented their first-place awards to Marta and Kate. Golf and Gratitude!! It’s never been more evident than it was at the 2018 Rose Hill Golf Tournament. It clearly was, as we often say, a great event for a great cause.

Supporting Rose Hill Through a Bequest Your will, or trust document, has the ability to protect the future of the people you care about. And, it has the ability to support the future of organizations you care about without jeopardizing your financial well-being during your lifetime. Bequests in your will or living trust are: Easy. A few sentences complete the gift. Revocable. You are free to alter your plans. Versatile. You can bequest an amount of money or, most common, a percentage of your estate. Tax-wise. Your estate is entitled to a tax deduction for gifts to qualified charitable organizations. We hope you’ll consider a legacy gift to the Rose Hill Foundation in support of Rose Hill Center. By doing so, you’ll be making a lasting contribution that will touch countless lives. Your gift, large or small, helps support our residents and programs. To discuss a planned gift to Rose Hill, call Ben Robinson at 248-531-2411.

DID YOU KNOW? When Rose Hill opened in 1992, its comprehensive Residential Rehabilitation Program was developed to treat adults with schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder. Within a few years, Rose Hill began to treat people with bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder. The goal was (and is!) to provide residents with the “tools” and medications they need to manage their illness, move back to the community, and achieve their highest level of independence.

Later, we identified the need for our residents to be able to experience independence prior to moving back to the community. This was achieved when Rose Hill developed the Transitional Living Program and opened six 3-bedroom townhouses on the campus, in a familiar, secure environment. At the same time, Rose Hill created the Community Support Program to provide case management services to those who live nearby after leaving Rose Hill’s on-campus programs.

Additionally, Rose Hill began to identify individuals who, despite their improvement while in the Residential Rehabilitation Program, were unable to return to the community on their own. Rose Hill responded by creating the Extended Residential Program to provide a safe haven and the continued oversight of a structured program.

Over the years, the diagnoses and treatment needs of individuals being referred to Rose Hill Center began to change. An increasing number of potential residents presented with co-occurring substance use disorder; personality disorders; co-morbid autism spectrum; and other similar treatment resistant diagnoses. Rose Hill recognized that these residents would be better served with new therapies and innovative treatments, in addition to appropriate medication management and the activities and programming already provided. Using grants restricted for this purpose from individual donors and foundations — including the DeRoy Testamentary Fund, The Ethel and James Flinn Foundation, and The Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan — Rose Hill trained the staff to facilitate several new, evidence-based treatments.

In 2010, Rose Hill established a Dialectical Behavioral Therapy track. This therapy, proven to be highly successful in treating residents with personality disorders, was being offered elsewhere as an outpatient therapy. Rose Hill was one of the first programs in the U.S. to provide it in a residential setting. Rose Hill initially trained three clinicians in this therapy but as the effectiveness of DBT became apparent, the entire clinical team received intensive DBT training so these strategies could be reinforced campus-wide.

Three years later, Rose Hill opened the Co-Occurring Residential Rehabilitation Program that utilizes strategies to treat people with mental illness and addiction, including Motivational Interviewing. This 6-bed program meets the unique and, often complex, treatment needs of this vulnerable, under-served population by guiding residents through structured programming, therapy, and activities designed to create a foundation for lifelong recovery. Additionally, Rose Hill strengthened its ability to effectively serve people with a mental illness and an autism spectrum disorder as a specialty element of the Residential Rehabilitation Program.

Currently, nine members of Rose Hill’s clinical team are participating in a year-long series of comprehensive off-site training sessions (ten days total) in Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy (RO-DBT). This new therapy helps people with over-control disorders such as anorexia nervosa, chronic depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and other extremely difficult-to-treat illnesses. It has only recently been introduced in the U.S. and Rose Hill will be among the first residential programs in the country to provide RO-DBT. (We will share more about this breakthrough approach when the staff completes their training.)

As evidenced by these and other similar initiatives, Rose Hill is committed to providing staff with the tools they need to manage programs and therapies that, in turn, provide residents with the tools and skills they need to successfully and effectively manage their illness. Training the staff and making a variety of treatments available to our residents touches on every aspect of our Mission and represents the intense focus on our Vision.

If, as the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words, how many words is a tour worth? Better yet, how many pictures is a tour worth?

Each year, hundreds of family members, mental health professionals, and donors find out by visiting our campus. When they do, they almost always express some variation of: The photos and brochures don’t do justice to this place; I had no idea Rose Hill was like this; and/or I’m so glad I came and saw this in person.

From April through July, Rose Hill staff hosted over 60 tours. The Professional Outreach team toured six representatives from hospitals, other referrers, insurance providers and community mental health organizations. These included Beaumont Health, Oakland County Community Mental Health, PsychAssets, and Aetna.

During this time, 50 families also visited, met with a member of the Admissions team, and toured the campus. These tours are a great opportunity for searching families to find out more about our programs and services, and they’re also a chance for prospective residents to see the campus and meet the staff.

In April, the Springfield Garden Club toured the greenhouses to learn more about the horticulture program they have been generously supporting. In May, student nurses from Mott Community College toured the campus.

Mariel Hemingway, actress, author, and keynote speaker at our 25th Anniversary Celebration last October, returned to Rose Hill for a visit in June. We accompanied her as she again toured the campus and had lunch with the residents. During her visit, she was shadowed by Volk Video Services who is producing a short video looking at Rose Hill from Mariel’s point of reference as a national mental health speaker/advocate. Mariel shared her experiences and insights regarding Rose Hill and how it compares to other programs she has visited. She expressed her gratitude to us for starting “this amazing place” and to you, the donors, for supporting Rose Hill. The video will be completed and posted on our website later this summer.

Adam Cardinal Maida of the Archdiocese of Detroit and his brother, Father Ted Maida, also visited and toured our campus in June. We were joined by several Board members. It had been many years since Cardinal Maida had visited Rose Hill and we were honored to show him the growth and changes that have taken place. He, too, was impressed with what he saw and heard!

Clearly, there are many reasons to visit Rose Hill Center. If you’d like to tour the campus, meet the staff, and see our programs and services in action, please call our team at 248-531-2405.
