“When people live to be very old, let them rejoice in everyday of life.”

This is the motto in our basic care and attention towards the residents of the Lions Home for the Elders.

I quoted this remark in my speech during the

Recognition Night on 13 December 2014.

There is a time for everything and a season for every activity.

By the end of December 2014, I would have come to a time that I will be completing my full term of four years in office as Chairman. Adding in another four years of office as 1st Vice Chairman, it would be a total of continuous eight years of serving in the Lions Home for the Elders Management Board.

Over these years, the goal setting program such as our annual Flag Day, together with many service and fund-raising projects, have been largely fulfilled. I am grateful for the tremendous amount of commitment and support from the Board members, the staff of the Lions Home and Fellow Lions. The public also plays a very important and significant role. Hence I would like to take this opportunity to thank all supporters, volunteers, corporate and general donors, especially those who have visited the Lions Home and brought joy to the residents.

There has been an increase in various grants from the Ministry of Health (MOH) to provide for the incremental cost of both residents and staff. I am pleased to report that at the completion of the yearly audits, the Home's compliance to good governance and transparent accounting system are in good order.

Looking Back and Looking ForwardThis year during the Recognition Night, we had a total of 13 prestigious Awards presented to the Lions Clubs, individuals and organisations responsible for raising or donating $50,000 or more to the Lions Home for the

Elders. The Lion H K Lau Award, inaugurated in 2004, is named after the late PCC Lion H K Lau.

Phase 1: The setting up of a Home for destitute was first initiated by the late PCC Lion H K Lau and some senior Lions of the Lions Clubs of Singapore way back in 1980. The Home first started a humble 18-bed shelter home for able-bodied destitute under a void deck in HDB estate at Block 403, Ang Mo Kio Ave 10, providing them with free lodging and care.

Phase 2: In 1985, it expanded into a full-fledged Nursing Home for the aged sick at a Post-war bunker in Toa Payoh Rise.

Phase 3: The Bedok Home officially opened on 16th November 1997. It was equipped with modern facilities and could accommodate 154 residents.

Phase 4: On 12 January 2003, Mr Lim Hng Kiang, then Minister for Health, officially opened the Toa Payoh Rise Home with updated equipment and modern facilities. The Home could accommodate 200 residents.

Phase 5: We progressed and moved on to what we are now: A total of 354 beds in two Lions Homes at Bedok South Ave 2 and Toa Payoh Rise. Tribute is all due to committed Lions, Past Chairmen, POAs, Management Board Members (past and present) and staff for their commitment and devotion in bringing the Lions Home this far. 34 years is a long joumey to travel and more needs are expected ahead. The immediate task is to move in to the New Home at Bishan. With mixed feelings, we are all going to miss the Toa Payoh Home for sentimental reasons, but on the other hand, we look forward to the new Home at Bishan.

Phase 6: The proposed six-storey Lions Home at Bishan Street 13 is currently under construction and scheduled to complete in May 2015. The purpose-built Lions Home design and layout of living areas will have a good amount of natural light and ample recreational areas for the residents’ activities. Special attention in the design is dedicated to Dementia Management, assisted Living Unit and Transitional Care facility. The New Building will accommodate a Senior Care Centre, an expansion of our services, in line with MOH's continuing plan for older adults to remain in the community.

ILTC Excellence Awards 2014Lions Home for the Elders wins Best Practice Award

When completed, MOH will benchmark our Home as a model Nursing Home. The cost of the construction is borne by MOH, including some basic furnishing and essential equipment. The time of the relocation is expected to be in October 2015. This is taking into consideration of the four-month period for mobilisation and transfer after the handover of the premises in May 2015.

In conclusion, I would like to express my gratitude to all the Clinical, Administrative and Support Staff, together

with Lions Clubs of Singapore for making Lions Home a well established institute to serve not only the old and needy but also needy young adults. With your continued support and contribution, the Home will then meet its objective to provide shelter and care to the needy, regardless of their race and religion.

PCC CHIN SlEW GIM Chairman (2011-2014) Lions Home For the Elders

The inaugural ILTC Excellence Awards 2014 ceremony was held in conjunction with ILTC Quality Festival 2014, on 10 October 2014. More than 200 individual and team-based awards were presented.

The ILTC Excellence Awards, organised by the Agency for Integrated Care, recognises and celebrates the contributions of individuals and project teams who

have demonstrated exemplary performance and made significant contributions in the areas of clinical and service quality, and embrace productivity and innovation in the Intermediate and Long-Term Care (ILTC) sector.

Lions Home for the Elders won the award for Best Practice in the ILTC sector.

Lions Home Coin Box ProjectThe Lions Home Coin Box Project, launched on 2 December 2013 and ending on 11 August 2014, collected a total of $30,032 for the Home. Based on the simple idea of encouraging Lions members and families to save up loose change in a piggy bank, it was an excellent example of beginning small but thinking big about Lions Clubs' mission, which is to embrace the welfare of the underprivileged elderly and aged sick who need assistance to achieve better quality of life.

The Coin Box Project was truly a “Gift of Love” united in service and giving. It also encourages the young to cultivate the value of saving to support the cause of sharing and giving.

Organising Chairperson Lion Lely Chin and her committee members would like to thank all Lions members and their families, as well as the Home staff who made the Coin Box Project a success.
