GLOBAL FOOD SECURITYLet us face the harsh reality that is haunting nations throughoutthe world today, every day and it will continue to get worse untilwe all take action. For the majority it is not the responsibility ofthe United Nations, the western world, countries with wealth.Every country in the world needs to act upon this, secure theirnations food and help others.

“Look after Mother Nature and Mother Nature will look afteryou”. Some may find our statement amusing for one momentpause and think about what we state. What have we done tothe land that every living creature, organism relies on. I don’tthink we even need to attempt to answer that. Do a simpleGoogle search and you will find millions of facts/articles. We willsay one thing though we have polluted the land with toxins, which is diminishing what can be grown on a daily basis to thepoint where we cannot grow anymore.

Is There Such a Thing as Food Security?

WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION

The problem of food security was discussed and identified nearly 2 decades ago. “The WorldFood Summit of 1996 defined food security as existing “when all people at all times have accessto sufficient, safe, nutritious food to maintain a healthy and active life”. Commonly, the conceptof food security is defined as including both physical and economic access to food that meetspeople's dietary needs as well as their food preferences. In many countries, health problemsrelated to dietary excess are an ever increasing threat, In fact, malnutrition and foodbornediarrhea are become double burden.

Food security is built on three pillars:

• Food availability: sufficient quantities of food available on a consistent basis.• Food access: having sufficient resources to obtain appropriate foods for a nutritious diet.• Food use: appropriate use based on knowledge of basic nutrition and care, as well as

adequate water and sanitation.

Food security is a complex sustainable development issue, linked to health throughmalnutrition, but also to sustainable economic development, environment, and trade. There is agreat deal of debate around food security with some arguing that:

• There is enough food in the world to feed everyone adequately; the problem is distribution. • Future food needs can - or cannot - be met by current levels of production. • National food security is paramount - or no longer necessary because of global trade.• Globalization may - or may not - lead to the persistence of food insecurity and poverty in rural

communities.

Issues such as: whether households get enough food, how it is distributed within the household and whether that food fulfils the nutrition needs of all members of the household show that food security is clearly linked to health.

WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION

Agriculture remains the largest employment sector in most developingcountries and international agriculture agreements are crucial to a country'sfood security. Some critics argue that trade liberalization may reduce acountry's food security by reducing agricultural employment levels. Concernabout this has led a group of World Trade Organization (WTO) member statesto recommend that current negotiations on agricultural agreements allowdeveloping countries to re-evaluate and raise tariffs on key products toprotect national food security and employment. They argue that WTOagreements, by pushing for the liberalization of crucial markets, arethreatening the food security of whole communities. Related issues include:

• What is the net impact of the further liberalization of food and agriculturaltrade, considering the widely differing situations in developing countries?

• To what extent can domestic economic and social policies - and food, agricultural and rural development policies - offset the diverse (and possiblynegative) impacts of international policies, such as those relating tointernational trade?

• How can the overall economic gains from trade benefit those who are mostlikely to be suffering from food insecurity?

• Do gains “trickle down” to enhance economic access to food for the poor?• How can food and agricultural production and trade be restrained from the

over-exploitation of natural resources that may jeopardize domestic foodsecurity in the long term?

• How to ensure that imported food products are of acceptable quality andsafe to eat?”

We are sure that some will totally disagree with the WHO, other organisationsin the world that there is no such need for food security. The ones who havethat mindset we would like to take this opportunity to provide some facts thatmay/may not change your view point.

The world is concerned about food security, rich countries, poor countries, developing countries, and the western world. On average everyweek there will be articles in newspapers, coverage on the news, documentaries on television whereby you can almost guarantee there will besome correlation to agriculture, food shortages, and food security. Isn’t it about time we woke up and faced reality rather than hoping theproblem will diminish? The problem has been around for decades and will continue to worsen each day.

We are just going to present a few articles on the severity of food security.

Food Security Country Profiles

This SWAC/CILSS initiative provides a set of analytical indicators allowing a better understanding of the causes of food crisis. It intends to inform and support decision-makers to take them into account when defining policies and investment strategies for a sustainable food security.

CLOSING STATEMENT

The harsh reality in today’s world is of food security and sustainability - andwe know that future generations are going to be the ones that really suffer. We can go into a grocery store and buy everything we desire - yet today, every3.6 seconds someone dies of hunger.

We are looking for a equity partner who shares our vision to join us in ourquest to change agriculture. With much of our world in a food security crisisawash in toxic synthetic inputs and dwindling yields of genetically modifiedfood, there is no better time to introduce an innovative proven technologywhich tackles all of these issues to the global market.
