For my high school graduation I was gifted a copy of Dr. Seuss’s book Oh the Places you Will Go. In the

book, Dr. Seuss weaves a tale of adventure and mystery, with a future full of possibility. It has been amazing to see the places God has taken me in life. Through a variety of jobs, homes and friendships. And now, I am on to a new adventure called parenthood. This year Jen and I welcomed our sweet girls Lily and Emma into the world. What an adventure.

This report is full of stories of adventure; stories of new and unique places that God calls us to. From La Grange to Galveston, from seminary to Guatemala - God calls us beyond the comfort of home into the world to serve.

These stories embody our camp response, “And we will!” When worship comes to an end, we are commissioned to “Go in Peace and Serve the Lord,” everyone responds, “Thanks be to God.” At camp we add with joy, “And we will!” Together we commit to go into the world and serve others. When we respond to God’s call we never fully know where we may end up. The places you will go are limitless and full of possibility. Serving God is quite an adventure. We are so grateful that you have joined us in our adventure through Lutherhill. And we are excited to see all the places God will call you, and how you will share the camp experience in new and unique ways.

Lutherhill holds a prominent place in the hearts of our members and in our congregation’s annual

ministry plan. Every year begins with a staff and church council retreat in January. We usually send 50+ people for Family Camp. Our confirmation and younger kids are there sometime in July. And we always encourage people to attend the various other retreat options through the year.

So, when the need to finish up the financing for the Zion Retreat Center in Galveston was brought before our leadership, there was no hesitation. We were on board and ready to go!

As a sign of unity and an expression of how important Lutherhill Ministries is to Faith, our three key leaders - President Kathy Patrick, Vice President Don Hodde, and 2nd Vice President Beth Bruce – agreed to co-chair our fundraising effort. We also decided that we wanted to conduct our campaign in a short period of time, asking for one-time gifts and pledges to be completed by the end of the year.

Beth Bruce hosted a dinner with our key donors. We shared the Lutherhill story during Temple Talks and we encouraged participation throughout our membership.

An exciting draw for us with the Zion Retreat Center is the future of retreating just got a bit closer to Houston. Like many congregations, our challenge today is developing relationships among our members. Time is so limited and precious that getting people together during the week is often impossible. Getting away for two or three days together is invaluable. We hope to add some new key retreats to our annual programming once the

Zion Retreat Center is completed.Just this month we had yet

another staff/church council retreat at Lutherhill. Once again we found we were able to get so much done beyond the “business of the church” by heading out together to a beautiful place, with a relaxed atmosphere, knowing

that God was there with and for us.As our fundraising campaign drew to a close we

were so grateful to announce that gifts and pledges totaled over $140,000. We were able to send nearly $120,000 to Lutherhill by the end of 2015 and trust that the uncollected pledges will come through in 2016.

We look forward to years of continued partnership in ministry with the great staff and growing facilities of Lutherhill Ministries.

We are excited to be in the construction and remodeling phase of the Zion Retreat Center. This past year has proven both challenging and rewarding during the contruction approval process.

We have now received $998,000 in cash and pledges. The amazing support and faithful partnership of our donors to this ministry are vital to the future of the Zion Retreat Center.

As we enter into the renewal process our focus falls on renewing the Retreat Center, creating the new website, www.zionretreat.org, and designing the programming that will take place.

What’s happening now?

Pat & Michael Dittrich-Time well spentLutherhill Volunteers

Our names are Michael & Pat Dittrich and we are volunteers at Lutherhill. Our involvement with

church camp started when we were kids and had the opportunity to attend during the summers. This had a great impact on our faith life. So when our son reached camping age, we made sure he had the opportunity to attend and he came to Lutherhill. It was while he was working as a counselor here that Michael & I had the idea to host a BBQ dinner for the staff on a weekend during the summer. And we have been helping at Lutherhill ever since!

Now that Michael and I are retired we come for a

week or so at a time to help in whatever way we can. Michael helps with mowing and maintenance and I help in the office with filing, mailings, and more. A big part of what we do during the summer is washing dishes! You can even find us in the back of the kitchen during retreats and hosted events!

We love interacting with all the people and watching the children as their faith gains confidence and grows. One of our favorite activities is helping with hamburger suppers

Lutherhill Serve DayVarious projects around camp

on Thursdays during summer camp. We wear our hamburger shirts and called them our “Gene Burger Shirts” (now called “Russell Burger” shirts!). We have worn them for several summers now and it is fun to have kids come up to us and say they remember us from the year before! Some of our best moments at Lutherhill are attending the worship services. It fills a person with hope to see 100 kids on their feet and singing their hearts out about their love of our Lord and Savior!

Lutherhill has a simple message of love and acceptance through our faith in Jesus and we see that reflected in

this ministry whether it is on the ropes course, at the pool, in a worship service or even washing dishes. It is our hope & prayer that while people (especially the children) are at Lutherhill that the seed of God’s love is planted and that it will continue to grow long after they leave camp.

Lutherhill is truly “a place for all people, of every generation to experience the love of Christ in unique settings and new ways”. And we thank God that we can be a part of that!

Joyce TeinertKathy’s Legacy

Walt and I, Joyce Teinert, attended Camp Chrysalis in the 50’s. Our experience, growth and love of

church camp continued through our 60 years together. Our commitment was to allow our children to have the same experience.

Our daughter Kathy attended Camp Chrysalis for years waiting for her time to apply to work at a camp site. In 1973 she was hired to be a Camp Hand at Lutherhill. Camp Hands did various jobs, one being emptying “honey pots” at outdoor sites. A few weeks later she was asked to be a counselor

and with prayerful consideration she accepted. She instilled her love for the campers, campsite, sunsets,

growing in her faith, and love for God, in many young ones; some we are still in contact with today. Returning to camp for her last week at Lutherhill she was involved in a car accident and was taken to be with her Lord and Savior.

The summer staff of 1973 started a fund for camper scholarships in memory of Kathy.

Walt and I re-established the fund in 2004-05 as the Kathy Teinert Memorial Campership Endowment. The annual interest accrued on the invested endowment is designated for camperships for children who otherwise would not be able to experience God’s work at church camp. Many scholarships have been granted over the years -ten

alone in 2015. To hear from those attending camp is heart warming and to know others have experienced God’s love. I thank God for allowing us to be a part of His plan.

The Teinert legacy continued with our son Ted and his wife Terrelyn attending Lutherhill in their youth. Our grandchildren, Caroline and John Teinert, both attended Lutherhill as campers and then as Interns and Camp Counselors.

Last summer while John served as a camp counselor, he found out that one of his campers

had been a recipient of the Kathy Teinert Memorial Campership Endowment. This camper had such a good experience at Lutherhill that he was attending

for a second year. John was able to share his family connection with the campers, this brought things full circle. It was wonderful for our whole family to see God’s hand at work through Kathy’s legacy.

“My gifts to Lutherhill continue as I believe in the programs offered and that Lutherhill’s mission is to be a camp open to all people. Many lives have been changed and the closing programs on Friday makes one feel the SPIRIT is Alive. The chapel is where one feels the closeness of our Lord and Savior. To be quite honest, we really didn’t know much about Lutherhill until 2 years ago. Our church

hosted Vicar, Jen Kindsvatter, and we were privileged to get to know her and her husband, Matt. Shortly thereafter, our son, Lance, was able to attend Confirmation Camp at Lutherhill with the other youth in our church. Lance had so much fun that last year both Lance and our daughter, Caroline, returned to Confirmation Camp. We are very thankful that from this closeness with the Kindsvatters and Lutherhill, the

mission opportunity arose to travel to Guatemala.

The enticement of travel to Guatemala was admittedly vague – we were to travel with several other families from the United States to serve and help. Just our presence and interaction with local people was deemed to be valuable and ambassador-like, especially with our children being approximately the same age as those from the Guatemalan villages attending school. The family consensus when asked what is remembered most about Guatemala is “the people.”

• Rob and Tara Cahill at Community Cloud Forest Conservation (CCFC) are amazing and really make a difference in the work they do in Guatemala – they have God-filled hearts and, in addition, are just plain fun to be around! And easy-going, but are focused and driven on CCFC goals. • Our group from Lutherhill and Lutheran Partners in Global Ministry will remain lifelong friends. We “walked” alongside some amazing people and families – all unique with interesting life experiences. The evening meals were always a chance to recap

the day, gain different perspectives, laugh, and enjoy the company. • The Q’eqchi’ kids that visited CCFC for several days made such an impact on my children – they have “nothing” by monetary standards, but they were the most generous, happiest kids we’ve ever met. They protected one another and were interested in learning from CCFC. They played soccer and tag and went for group hikes to nearby caves. • Part of the education process includes the goal of keeping young Guatemalan girls from marrying and having children at a young age. I have to admit, my 12 year-old daughter was surprised that many 12 year-old girls in the village never get more than a 6th grade education and get married so young. That was something that really disturbed not only my daughter, but us parents also. CCFC is working hard to improve this and have produced many success stories. • The Q’eqchi’ family who invited us into their home in the Cloud Forest village, Sersab, never apologized for their dirt floors, nor the small size of their home, nor their minimal furnishings, but welcomed us as we all crowded inside. They went and found more chairs so we could all sit down, and asked the same questions I would have had as a parent with my child being gone for several days to school: Did she get along with everyone? Did she learn a lot? They were also abundantly generous by insisting to giving us several pounds

of plums from their tree – one girl even running after us to give me another bag after we had walked 10 minutes down the trail. • The WALC (Women in Agroecology Leadership for Conservation) program provides opportunities for girls from the villages to get higher educations. There were several wonderful WALC girls at CCFC that week who helped cook and clean our rooms. Although mostly shy, they always had a smile on their face and never seemed to get tired. I still had pointy stickers from the naranjilla bush in my hand 6 months after we returned, but they picked the naranjillas with no difficulty and never complained. When we tried to carry the naranjilla baskets on our head, we realized the weight of the baskets and us “gringos” switched off one basket between 4 people while Juana (one of the WALC girls) carried the other basket the whole 20 minute walk back.

We admit, we had no idea what we were getting ourselves into and had a few initial concerns, but it developed into an experience we will never forget and illustrated the message that God doesn’t want us to get too “comfortable” or “complacent”. He wants us to take chances and trust Him that He has a plan and it will turn out so much better if you open up and allow Him to guide your path - trust God, serve God,

be generous, live simply. It was easy to see on the trip. The kids learned how to conserve energy

and really appreciate long hot baths. They learned you can be happy with minimal “worldly” possessions and there can be peaceful beauty in serenity and nature. During the trip we had a rough agenda, were with new friends, and we didn’t worry about where we were going to sleep or what we were going to

eat. Nobody cared if we wore the same outfit several times, or if our hair wasn’t perfect. It was an opportunity to spend time with God and without the often self-imposed pressures we create for ourselves in our daily lives. We could listen to God. We could

watch God work to dramatically change the lives of the people and children through CCFC.

Looking back, it really was about the simple, most important things in life.

I remember going to Bible Camp, Luther Park in Chetek, WI, as a 7th and 8th grader. It was wonderful. In 2004

my daughter, Hannah, had her first opportunity to go to an Elementary Retreat at Lutherhill, I jumped at the chance to send her. I had never even been to Lutherhill so I was pleased to hear her come home telling how much she loved Lutherhill. Two years later her brother, Nathan, began going to Elementary Retreats too.

Fast forward to 2007, I began working at Kinsmen Lutheran Church. My responsibilities included coordinating Confirmation Camp and Elementary Retreats at Lutherhill. When preparing for 2008 summer camp, I came across Lutherhill’s retreat listing and saw that there was a Women’s Pampering Retreat. Kinsmen had held Women’s Retreats in the past, but that had been about 8 years earlier. I thought why not take a chance at the Lutherhill Women’s Pampering Retreat? The details of the retreat looked great – a massage, cooking classes, Bible Study and free time. I remember it well. I shared the information and convinced other Kinsmen ladies to register and the rest is history. I didn’t realize until much later that this was the first Women’s Pampering Retreat ever to be held at Lutherhill.

The majority of the 32 Kinsmen ladies attending that first Women’s Pampering retreat were like me and had

never had been to Lutherhill. My group of cabin-mates were assigned to Cabin 6. We had arrived in the dark so didn’t see much of camp except our cabin and the Carby Chapel. When we woke up in the morning,the reflection from the pool house looked like a lake. The ladies were impressed – a lake in the middle of camp! It didn’t take us long to realize that our eyesight might have needed to be checked, but that did not deter us from loving Lutherhill – the tablecloths, the massage, being waited on, feasting on Lutherhill’s food, including

the bacon wrapped dates, Lutherhill’s hospitality, and the love of our Lord. It was a mountain-top experience. I’ve been fortunate and privileged to attend the Women’s Pampering Retreats every year since, along with other Kinsmen ladies. It’s a holy weekend set aside for faith, fellowship and lots of food.

In 2008, I returned to Lutherhill with a group of Elementary campers and that same summer I went back for a

week of Confirmation camp. I loved every trip and so did my kids. Hannah and Nathan attended camp every summer and even served as Interns on Summer Staff. Hannah works as a Camp Counselor (year 3 in 2016) and Nathan is hoping to serve as a Camp Counselor for the summer of 2016 too.

Lutherhill is a slice of heaven. Lutherhill is a place for all generations to share and experience the love of Christ in unique settings and new ways. Thanks be to God for the ministry of Lutherhill.

Lutherhill has truly had a profound impact on our lives. Amanda’s first encounters with Lutherhill were as a

young child when she would hang out in the Ark while her parents were at Via De Cristo weekends. Her very first week ever of summer camp at Lutherhill was when she was in the 3rd grade. She fell in love with the camp songs (to this day she will never forget the “belly button” song sung with a Jamaican accent) and games and loving environment. Jeremy first came to Lutherhill as a confirmation camper. He remembers camp being a very different way to encounter God and experience faith. He felt freed to think in new ways about God. He also found a very different kind of community, a positive, affirming, mutual, supportive and inclusive space.

In the spring of Jeremy’s freshman year at Texas Lutheran University (TLU), he remembers Lutherhill recruiting for summer jobs. He decided it would be a great place to continue growing and learning. That summer at camp was even more amazing than he could have imagined. Jeremy was already on track to go to seminary, but his experience at camp gave him an opportunity to actively engage in ministry and reflected back to him his gifts. He also met some of the best friends of his life that summer.

When he returned to TLU that fall, his camp counselor energy, welcoming spirit, and enthusiasm were in full

swing. He and other fellow staff who were now TLU classmates, invited new freshman to join in tossing Frisbee on the field. Enter TLU freshman Amanda. She joined in early as one of the Frisbee recruits and stood in awe of this kind, welcoming leader of the Frisbee game (who was kind of cute too!). It wasn’t too long after that first encounter that Jeremy and Amanda began dating.

Amanda started TLU undecided in major. The summer after her second year, she joined Jeremy at Lutherhill as a camp counselor. She began the summer doubtful of her gifts, but excited. She remembers how much

she enjoyed Bible studies with her campers, and being able to talk together with them about faith. That summer was an important part of Amanda’s discernment in addition to her time at TLU. She soon voiced the idea about ordained ministry.

They graduated from TLU, married in the summer of 2010, attended seminary, graduated in May of 2014, and began serving in their first calls in the panhandle of Texas. Camping ministry is still a very important part of their lives and a part of ministry they seek to lift up in their congregations and synod. They still love coming home to Lutherhill any chance they get. “Lutherhill is like Hogwarts. There is a magical energy every time you come. The atmosphere of the outside world seems to fade away, with all of its expectations, judgments and burdens. In its place is a loving community, with people who treat you as family, as a beloved child of God, worthy of love.”, the Ullrich’s.

The 14th Annual Lutherhill Golf Tournament was held on May 8th. 100 golfers joined us at Cypress Lakes Golf Club for a great day of golf, fellowship and fundraising. Over $30,000 was raised and benefits Lutherhill’s programs and helps make campership possible for every camper. It was a great night of celebration and fellowship as 315 people joined us at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott on September 12, 2015. We were blessed to have raised was over $120,000 for the camping ministry at Lutherhill.The evening began with cocktails and music by The Broken Spokes. The Silent Auction featured more than 95

items to bid on and back by popular demand, our guests took to the Wine Wall which featured wines including Dom Perignon Champagne, Frias Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon, Rombauer Chardonnay and many more.

Guests also had the opportunity to make a Lutherhill wish come true! The Lutherhill Wishing Wall was an opportunity to provide needed items and services, both big and small, for the camp. Over 50 wishes were granted for Lutherhill Ministries.

Another popular event was the Deck of Cards Raffle where chances of winning were high! Guests had the opportunity to purchase their lucky playing card for the chance to win a trip for 2 to the wine country in Sonoma, California!

After partaking in a sumptuous dinner and libations our guests bid high and often on attractive Live Auction packages featuring Mountain Top Adventures, Jewelry with Soul, Sips & Stogies, and more!
