FINANCIAL AID FOR COLLEGE
Most student aid is awarded on the basis of financial need. Need is the difference between your cost of education (educational expenses such as tuition, fees, room, board, books, supplies and other) and the amount you and your family are expected to contribute to your education. A standard formula used for all applicants determines this amount. The formula is called the Expected Family Contribution (EFC). If there is any remaining balance after subtracting the EFC from your cost of education, you are considered to have financial need. The information you submit on the FAFSA application is used to determine the Expected family Contribution. This process is called need analysis.
You may apply for financial aid as soon as your annual income tax information is available. This should be done as early in January as possible. To apply for financial aid you must complete the FAFSA. Completion of the FAFSA is required for Hope Lottery and TN Promise scholarships. The FAFSA form cannot be submitted online (www.fafsa.ed.gov ) before January 1, 2016.
