Von Lunen is 2014 Batavia Citizen of the YearBy ASHLEY SLOBODA

[email protected]

BATAVIA – A library trust-ee described as the father ofthe Rotary Club of Batavia hasbeen named the2014 Batavia Cit-izen of the Year.

Holly Deitch-man, executivedirector of theBatavia Cham-b e r o f C o m -m e r c e , s a i dthe selectioncommittee was unanimouswhen choosing J. Thomas VonLunen for the honor.

“Tom really stood out from

the crowd,” she said, notingthere were seven nominees, three of whom had previouslybeen nominated.

“It was brought up a lotabout how he is the father ofthe Rotary Club in Batavia.”

Von Lunen, 68, will re-ceive the award at the BataviaChamber of Commerce’s an-nual recognition event in lateJanuary.

He said he was “floored”when he got the news, whichhe wasn’t expecting. In fact, hesaid, when Deitchman madean announcement for last-min-ute nominations at a Rotarymeeting, he began thinking ofthose he felt were deserving of

the recognition.“It’s a great honor to be

recognized by your peers,” hesaid.

A committee of previousCitizen of the Year recipientsselected Von Lunen for theaward, which recognizes ex-traordinary contributions tothe community over the courseof the recipient’s lifetime.

Batavia Public Library Di-rector George Scheetz said hewas inspired to nominate VonLunen because he doesn’t seekthe limelight, and a lot of peoplelikely don’t realize how muchhe’s done for the community.

Scheetz said he has cometo greatly admire Von Lunen

in the 10 years he has knownhim through Rotary and thelibrary, where Von Lunen hasserved as trustee for nearlyeight years.

Von Lunen exemplifies theRotary’s motto “service aboveself,” Scheetz said, describinghim as selfless and “a real giv-er.”

According to a news re-lease, Von Lunen’s leadershipin fundraising with the Rota-ry Club has helped supportnumerous local projects andinitiatives. The list includesthe Peg Bond Center pavilion,Bulldogs Unleashed, the Bata-via Riverwalk boardwalk andgazebo, Batavia High School’s

Interact Club and an annualscholarship program for grad-uating seniors at the school.

His community involve-ment also has included workwith Hesed House, bell ringingfor The Salvation Army, serv-ing as an usher at Holy CrossCatholic Church, volunteeringat Lazarus House and, amongacts, helping neighbors cleartheir driveways in the win-ter and remove broken treebranches after a storm, ac-cording to the release.

D e i t c h m a n s a i d V o nLunen’s volunteer efforts aregenuine.

“All of this is given straightfrom his heart,” she said.

WinterWednesdays go wild at Hickory Knolls Discovery CenterBy CAROL HAGGAS

[email protected]

Too cold to take the littleones out to play? Parents willwant to drop in to the Hick-ory Knolls Discovery Centerinstead and let the kids warmup to the wonders of winterthrough weekly programs thatexplore the great outdoorsfrom inside the center’s com-fortable activity rooms.

The hour-long, drop-inprograms begin at 10:30 a.m.every Wednesday during Jan-uary, February and March.Designed for children 3 andolder, the sessions use craftsand games, songs and storiesto help children learn howanimals and plants handlewinter weather. With plentyof room to explore and dancearound, the center is an idealspot for kids to blow off somesteam while gathering someimportant information abouthow the natural world works.

“Just like animals, humansalso tend to go into hiberna-tion when it gets cold” saidLauren Kulinski, natureprograms supervisor. “Every-body goes a little stir crazyby the end of the winter, butthere’s still so much going onin nature during these months

that people aren’t aware of.These programs can help alle-viate some of that cooped upenergy and show a lot of coolstuff that’s still active.”

Each Wednesday of themonth is devoted to a differentwinter theme, according toKulinski.

The first and third Wednes-days are designated Busy Bea-vers days, where story-tellingand crafts are combined todemonstrate how and why an-imals hibernate, gather foodand settle into their surround-ings during winter months.

Seeing those surroundingsup close and personal is theorder of the day on secondWednesdays when WinterWanderers can bundle upand hike through the woods. There are many plants andanimals that thrive in coldweather, and the staff at Hick-ory Knolls can help childrenlook for clues on how plantsand animals adapt to survive.

“Winter is a fascinatingtime, and there is much tolearn, like the many waysbirds feed and where differentanimals create their winter

homes,” said Kulinski. But if being stuck at home is

starting to make kids go a littlestir crazy, the fourth Wednes-day of each month is when kidscan drop in and get a Cabin Fe-ver Cure through nature-basedgames, activities and musicthat will take care of any excessenergy that may be building up.

“It’s a good time for kids toget their winter wiggles out,”said Kulinski.

There is no pre-registrationrequired for any of the Wednes-day drop-in programs, whichmakes them ideal, spur-of-the-moment activities on dayswhen kids and parents need alittle change of pace. Parentscan register their child on siteby arriving just a few minutesbefore the program begins. There is a fee of $5 per child.Children younger than 5 mustbe accompanied by an adult.

“We have a good time, andit really helps kids and theirparents get through the win-ter,” said Kulinski.

For information about thenature drop-in programs, con-tact Kulinski at 630-513-4393.

Over 80% of what we learn comes through oureyes, making them our most important connectionto the world around us. While we may take ourvision for granted, there is no underestimating thecritical demands our eyes make for their continuedgood health and proper functioning. The brainand visual system account for only two percentof our body weight, yet they consume about 25%of our nutritional intake. Thus, adhering to goodnutritional habits can play a big role in how wellwe see. In addition, although regular checkups areimportant for maintaining and/or correcting vision, most Americans are overdue for an eye exam. Ifyou are one of them, do your eyes a favor andschedule an appointment.

Wethink it is important that you get yourcoffee from people who are practicingsustainable farming practices, as well asgrowing quality crops.”

FreshGround opened at 321 StevensSt., Suite N, Geneva, in October afterpreviously being located in West Chica-go for about three years. The new loca-tion is almost three times bigger thanFreshGround’s previous location.

“We have more production room, andwe are also hoping to have more peoplecome in and do brewing classes andcoffee cuppings,” Andersen said. “Coffeecuppings are kind of like wine tastings, except for coffee.”

The business sells a variety of coffeeby the pound that is roasted at the store.Along with its store, FreshGroundRoasting also has a wholesale andcatering business. The store, for themost part, works with missions that areworking directly with coffee farmers.

FreshGround works with six oreight different farms all over the world, including farms in Honduras, Mexico,Ethiopia, Sumatra and New Guinea.

“In Central America, there’s anorganization called Growers First that’sworking directly with farmers there,”Andersen said. “In Ethiopia, we workwith an organization called the NewCovenant Foundation. That’s a medicalmission and church plant organization, but they also work directly with farmers

just helping them grow better coffee andimplement more sustainable farmingpractices. They also teach them how tograde coffee so they know the qualitythat they are growing.”

As an evangelical Christian, Ander-sen said he thought working with suchorganizations was the right thing to do.It also helps to ensure quality control,he said.

“We know the people that are work-ing on the farms, and we know whatthey are doing quality control-wise, sowe’re able to get a better quality coffee,”Andersen said. “The buyers that wework with are working directly withthe farmers, so they’ve tasted the coffeeat the farm and know exactly what thequality level is like. And they’re able towork with the farmers if the quality ofthe coffee isn’t up to where it needs tobe.”

Each coffee has its own unique flavor,he said, which customers can discoverthrough the coffee cuppings the storeholds.

“If they are roasted properly, you cantaste the individual flavors from every

origin, and they are all unique,” Anders-en said. “An Ethiopian coffee is radicallydifferent from a coffee from Sumatra, which is radically different from aHonduras coffee. They all have differenttastes and flavors.”

Because education is a key part ofwhat FreshGround does, the store con-ducts classes every other week on howpeople can brew coffee on their own,Andersen said.

FreshGround’s next coffee-brewingclass will take place at 9:30 a.m. Satur-day, Jan. 17, at FreshGround. The one-hour class is free, but space is limited. Those interested in attending, can signup beginning Saturday, Jan. 10, by visit-ing www.freshgroundroast.com.

Andersen eschews the popular sin-gle-serving coffee brewing systems thatexist today.

“There is a convenience factor withthe K-Cups, but you do not get thequality out of a K-Cup as you get frombrewing it yourself,” he said. “And itreally only takes five minutes to brew aquality cup of coffee.”

More information about Fresh-Ground is available by going to itswebsite, www.freshgroundroast.com, orby calling the store at 630-457-4458.

BATAVIA – Over the years,Gaetano’s in Forest Park hasbeen recognized as a superi-or Italian dining spot acrossChicago, raking in exemplaryratings from Zagat, Chicago’sBest and Open Table. Now,Kane County residents needgo no further than their ownbackyard to sample Gaetano’sadventurous Italian cuisine.

Gaetano’s, a fine-diningrestaurant nestled on thecorner of Wilson and Riverstreets in downtown Batavia, opened in August, and we arelucky to have it. Let me tellyou why.

A casual, kitchy settingthat looks as if you’ve wan-dered into a real-life render-ing of Vincent van Gogh’s“The Cafe,” Gaetano’s servesinventive, old-world Italianfare with a modern twist.

Executive chef Gaeta-no DiBenedetto’s cookingcareer spans three decades, having worked as executivechef at restaurants in Paris,Milan, London and in theU.S., according to the restau-rant’s website. He has quite alaundry list of achievements, including preparing statedinners for the presidents ofItaly; serving as team Ita-ly’s chef in the 2002 WinterOlympics in Salt Lake City;and receiving the “OspitalitaItaliana” award given by theItalian government for havingan “authentic” Italian restau-rant – a seal of approval towhich only 600 restaurants inthe world can lay claim, statesthe site.

Gaetano is an intrepidculinary trailblazer, intricate-ly playing with multi-tieredflavor combinations that youcannot get anywhere else. Therestaurant boasts an extensivemenu, and a specials menuthat changes often.

For a well-rounded sam-pling of what Gaetano’s isall about, diners can enjoymultiple tasting menus: The“Gaetapas” tasting menu ($60a person), which includesthree courses (a total ofnine dishes) served appe-tizer-style with pasta and adessert tray; and the “Chef’s

Choice” tasting menu ($75 aperson), a four-course (a totalof 11 dishes) appetizer- andentree-style meal with desserttray. Each tasting menu hasthe option of being pairedwith wine at an additional $34a person. To cut down the costever-so-slightly, Thursdays, there is a $10 (per person)discount applied to the“Gaetapas” tasting menu, andMonday the eatery adds a $45pasta tasting to its menu.

The restaurant makes itsown limoncello and offerscocktails. Most of the optionson the wine list are availableonly by the bottle, but thereare a handful of reds andwhites available by the glass.

Try the Rocco dei Mori Coper-tino, Puglia, ($10 a glass) for adelicious, full-bodied red.

My dining companion andI traipsed through a wintrylandscape to Gaetano’s, justbefore a heavy snowfall Mon-day evening, when we weregreeted by a warm fire uponentering the restaurant. Thecozy atmosphere continuedthroughout with warm, Vene-tian-style, golden-hued wallswith a starry-night trim andblock-like dark wooden tablesset with benches and chairsfit with pillows. Pops of colorprovided by the eclectic lan-terns hanging from the ceilingprovided an old-world charmto the restaurant’s interior.

The service was impecca-ble from start to finish; ourwaiter knew the menu well, and our water glasses, whichincluded a cucumber slice toadd freshness, were alwaysfilled to the brim. All of thepastas are made from scratch, and the restaurant uses fresh, quality ingredients.

To start, we orderedDatteri con Polpettina ($11)– dates stuffed with beef andchorizo, wrapped in pancet-ta, baked in the restaurant’swood-burning oven and

served with coconut tomatosauce accented with cumin, coriander and jalapeño – andthe Calamari Ripiene al PortoRosa ($12) – tempura-friedcalamari rolled with aspar-agus, topped with sun-driedtomato spicy shrimp sauceand served with soy-lime citr-onette and borlotti aioli.

Once the calamari hit mydining companion’s lips, shesaid, “This is my new favoritething in the world right now.”

The calamari, which wasserved in the vein of a sushiroll, was tender, with a tex-ture of silk, while the tempuraand asparagus provided alayer of crunch.

Another appetizer worthnoting is the Capesante alCioccolato ($14), a unique dishwith fresh-harvested scallopsdusted with cocoa powder androasted in a wood-burningoven and served over kingoyster mushrooms, chocolatevinaigrette and watercresswith a finish of 25-year-oldbalsamico from Modena.

For our entrees, we or-dered the Involtini di Maiale($29) – crab-stuffed porklayered with shrimp over abed of garlic-mashed potatoesin a savory sauce – and the

Pappardelle ai Funghi Selvag-gi ($27) – house-made pastatossed with wild mushroomssautéed with garlic, shallotsand white wine and finishedwith shaved Parmigiano.

Thick noodle ribbons inthe dish intertwined with ahealthy portion of hearty,perfectly-cooked wild mush-rooms, giving the meal arustic, earthy flair, while theInvoltini’s rich and savoryflavor combinations tickledthe palate.

I cannot stress what alovely experience I had atGaenato’s in Batavia. Oozingold-world, eccentric charm,Gaetano’s is a place you visitto get away from it all; to lettime stand still, even for justan evening; and to enjoythe true fruits of life – greatfood, wine and kinship – theessence of Italy.

10 SPORTSOn the big stage

By KEVIN [email protected]

CHICAGO – Inadvertent-ly channeling his inner prepstudent section, Bulls radioannouncer Chuck Swirskylobbed a question to a few re-porters late the afternoon ofJan. 3.

“Where is Kaneland?”Swirsky asked, straightfacedand without the familiarchant-and-clap singsong oftenassociated with the phrase.

For 32 minutes of clocktime before that moment, the Kaneland and St. CharlesNorth boys basketball teamsbasked in the exposure thataccompanied playing at theUnited Center. Swirsky’s que-ry merely provided a topper ashe prepared to broadcast theBulls’ game against the BostonCeltics that night.

Even the adults involvedin the high school productionbeamed.

“It’s still surreal,” trans-planted North public addressannouncer Michael Smith saidat halftime.

Teams from the area havemade midseason journeys tothe UC for the past severalseasons. The tradition has sur-vived many sloppy and sleetycommutes – much like the oneJan. 3 – not to mention the dis-solution of the Western SunConference.

At 8:45 a.m. New Year’sEve 2008, Geneva and Kane-land met in a WSC game onthe Windy City’s West Side.Vikings coach Phil Ralstoncredited Vernon Hills counter-part Matt McCarty for alertinghim to an open date as part ofthe Bulls’ Preps with Pros pro-gram.

In November, Bulls man-ager of group ticket sales Rob-by Joseph emailed North andKaneland coaches Tom Poulinand Brian Johnson, respec-tively, with a number of doc-uments featuring Bulls letter-head and the Preps with Prosname.

As the home team, Northprovided the PA announcer. Both schools used their own

statisticians and cheerlead-ers.

“We’ve got a pretty greatview from the scorer’s table,”said North statistician EricWillson, also the school’s boyssoccer coach. “I’m usuallysitting a lot higher than thiswhen I’m here.”

Kaneland stat keeper BrianAversa, the school’s baseballcoach in the spring, reveled inthe opportunity as well.

Aversa typically keeps thebook with popcorn sleeves andspare pencils at arm’s length. On Jan. 3, he sat amid NBAstatistics monitors and soundsoftware.

“It’s neat being down here,”Aversa said. “Great for thekids and community to enjoyit.”

A regimented agendasteered the North Stars andKnights through the min-utes immediately before and

after the game.In between, North took

early command en route to a70-43 nonconference victory. At the break – after confirm-ing with Poulin and assistantRob Prentiss that theirs was

indeed the team leading, 36-17– Swirsky offered the follow-ing advice:

“Oh my gosh, keep focused.… They always say don’t playto the scoreboard.”

The North Stars were the

first to vacate their auxiliarylocker room at the end of thegame, prompting a UC officialto swiftly insert the placard ofthe usual tenants – the Luv-abulls dancers.

Forced to leave the arenafor at least 90 minutes beforegates opened for the Bulls-Celt-ics game many later attend-ed, those players and fanswho stuck around venturedthroughout Chicago for a biteto eat.

In the process, they an-swered Swirsky’s question.

Where is Kaneland? Some-where on cloud nine, just likeNorth.

Open-concept floor plansmay be the single biggestdesign trend of the pastdecade. Even in cities knownfor traditional interiors, newapartment buildings and con-dominiums have embracedopen layouts. But the flip side of these

floor plans is that in a smallspace, you’re often forcedto cook, sleep, eat and relaxin one room. That can be ablessing and a curse.“When all of your spaces

flow together, it can feelsuffocating in a differentway,” says Megan Blake, whoruns an interior design firm inAlexandria, Virginia. “Some-times, it’s nice to have a littlevisual separation.”For renters, whose contracts

probably don’t permit cus-tom woodwork, the easiestsolution is a room screen or

tall shelving unit. Both havebenefits: Decorative screens

bring privacy and style to adull space, and shelving unitsprovide extra storage. The most important things

to consider when shoppingfor any type of room dividerare height and light, Blakesays. Most pieces measurebetween five and six feethigh, leaving a few feet ofspace between the top ofthe unit and the ceiling. Thisheight tends to work wellbecause it allows the room toretain a little feeling of loft-iness and lets light from thewindows flow over the top.“Low wall dividers can seem

awkward in a small room un-

less they’re done just right,”she said. Her rule of thumb is to

match the height of thescreen or bookshelf to thetallest person living in thespace, allowing two to threefeet of space between thetop of the unit and theceiling. The exception wouldbe an opaque divider, suchas a paper screen or openshelving unit, that lets lightthrough the center. Theseunits can be ceiling heightbecause of their transparen-cy.

Folding screens can bedifficult to keep in the centerof a room because they aren’talways sturdy enough to stay inone place. So, for design novices who are

looking to split one room intotwo, the safest bet is a mod-ular-style bookcase that lookslike open square boxes stackedon top of one another. Many retailers offer pieces

this shape, but perhaps themost common is Ikea’s KallaxShelving Unit ($139, www.ikea.com), which comes in white, black and birch finishes and has16 cubes. Bush Furniture alsoproduces a few 16-cube roomdividers that are sold at retail-ers such as Staples and Wayfair.Almost identical but offering

Alison Fedderson, a seniordesigner with Garrison HullingerInterior Design in Portland,Oregon, said she frequentlyuses double-sided bookcases tobreak up a space, and they don’talways have to be floated in themiddle of a room. They can alsobe placed against larger piecesof furniture, such as a sofa orbed. “This trick helps create adefined space and gives yourlarger pieces of furniture some-thing to anchor to,” she said.Screens come in handy when

making use of wasted corners.Whether you want to section offa private area, shield some lug-gage or just add visual interestto a wall that you can’t paint, amodern, decorative screen canbe a cheap fix.One of Blake’s clients works

out of her dining room and usesa mirrored folding screen fromArteriors to hide her printer, files and bags when she hascompany. “Nobody ever won-ders about what’s behind thescreen,” Blake said. “If anything, they’re commenting about hownicely the screen reflects the restof the room’s lighting.”

For crafty types, there areendless ways to make your owndivider. String a decorative sheetfrom the ceiling. Or follow DianeHenkler’s step-by-step instruc-tions on her blog, In My OwnStyle (www.inmyownstyle.com),for how to use bifold doors tocreate your own folding screen. If your space could use a

little more greenery, considerordering a modular plantingsystem from the Italian designstudio Supercake. Its stylish iPotis an indoor gardening unit thatdoubles as a bookcase or roomdivider (starting at $110 for thesmallest unit with one planterbag, www.ipotdesign.it).Whatever you choose, it’s im-

portant that the piece match theaesthetic of your existing furni-ture. If your taste leans rustic, trythe Nantucket Painted Four-Pan-el Room Dividers from ScreenGems ($664, www.walmart.com), which comes in six colorsand offers a farmhouse feel. Ifyour style is more modern, Ikea’sRisor room divider screen ($129,www.ikea.com) will do the trick.“It has to mesh,” Blake said.

“So if the rest of your decor isn’ttraditional Oriental or Zen, don’tgo buy one of those Japanesepaper screen dividers. It will looklike it’s from another era.”

• DIVIDERSContinued from page 13

A room divider can add privacy and style to an open floor plan; here, the Italian-made iPot doubles as aplanter and a bookcase.

Dear Monty: Best start for first-time homebuyersDear Monty:We want to

start looking for our first home. There is a ton of informationavailable, but it feels conflictingand confusing. We want thisto be a fun and exciting timein our lives, but we need someadvice. Can you share yourthoughts about how we shouldgo about buying our firsthome? – John and Terrie V.Dear John and Terrie V.:

Buying a home is a complicat-ed and lengthy process youenter to achieve your ultimategoal.Experience has proven that

your best ally is knowledge toaid you in navigating this pro-cess. While there is informa-tion available, it can be camou-flaged in myth, misinformationand partial information. The best way to begin is to

understand and accept thatinvesting time in acquiring andutilizing the right knowledgeis the surest and safest way toproceed. After all, this may be your

single largest investment.Without this knowledge, theprobability of long delays, unnecessary risks, simple – yetcostly – errors and frustrationincrease exponentially.

Ready, aim, fireA real estate transaction is a

process, not an event. It is aseries of smaller transactions, each very crucial for differentreasons. Each one has a con-tract deadline. Independentcompanies serving the realestate industry execute thesetransactional tasks.Understanding how each

task fits into the larger trans-action and following each

tasks progress toward meet-ing the deadline is important.Title insurance, inspection,

testing and appraisal compa-nies are examples of theseother facets. This understanding allows

you to challenge a procedureor reject advice you may nothave questioned otherwise. While you and the seller arefocused on this one transac-tion, everyone else involvedis simultaneously workingmany transactions.Accepting the responsibility

for getting the knowledgebefore you need it and forthe outcome of each task isthe surest course of actionto achieve a positive experi-ence.Here is a simple schedule

that illustrates the steps ahomebuyer will take in atypical real estate transac-

tion. This process is bestkept in the order listed tomaximize efficiency, gainnecessary informationbefore you need it and in-crease the odds of an error– free transaction.

Steps in buying a home1. Mortgage loan prequal-

ification: Get pre-approvalletter for an amount.2. Determining preferenc-

es: Match preferences toloan amount available.3. Gathering information:

neighborhoods, schools,important amenities.

See HOMEBUYERS, page 16

RichardMontgomery

DEAR MONTY

rgbstock.com photo

The first step in purchasing a new home is getting a mortgage pre-approval letter for an amount.

Page 16: GNR -1-8-2015

4. Choose an agent: Find the bestagent for your circumstances.5. Preview homes: Consider a start with

an “area tour” of several neighborhoods.6. Make an offer: This important docu-

ment controls all that follows.7. Negotiate: Understand the home’s

range of value.8. Mortgage application: confirmation

of loan commitment.9. Satisfy contingencies: inspection,

appraisal, survey and more.10. Pre-closing inspection: Ensure

condition same as last look.11. Closing: money exchanges hands

and title transfers.12. Moving day: the first day of your

new home adventure.

Not so fastFrequently, consumers fail to realize

the complexity and risks until they havebecome a victim. Other customers be-come victims, but never realize it. Hereare a few examples of actual events todemonstrate the potential consequencesof being an uninformed consumer:• Buyer paid $10,000 to replace a

defective roof after receiving incorrectadvice from both the real estate agentand buyer’s parents regarding homeinspection procedures.• Seller stood up at the closing when

transaction failed because buyer wasshort of funds to close. Several partiesfailed to verify buyer’s funds. Missing thissmall detail damaged both parties.• Elderly seller praises agent for quick

home sale at full price. Agent was aclose friend from church. Neither real-ized home was valued $25,000 undermarket.

Selecting, managing agentAnother important point to implement

is to identify multiple real estate agents, interview three finalists with specificquestions that help you sense they fityou, and your circumstances. Rate thequality of their responses and thendecide.

You have a good startThese initial actions will prepare you

for the exciting and complex process ofbuying a home.Envision you are playing a virtual

reality game – only this is real life, realmoney and real essential. By anticipat-ing and understanding the details of theprocess, you can take advantage of thisknowledge to act and react efficientlyand confidently to reach your goal.
