GMIT launches SSHH!! Campaign for 2012/13

GMIT Students’ Union have recently launched the SSHH!! Campaign to educate students on the need to show respect to neighbours, the community in general, and to keep the noise down.

Joe O’Connor, GMIT Students’ Union President states, “Myself and Sam (GMIT Students’ Union Vice President and Welfare Officer) are fully aware of residents issues with the behaviour of a minority of our students. We are doing our utmost to tackle the issue, including the SSHH!! Campaign, which was recently launched by Sam”.

Sam O’Neill, Students’ Union Vice President and Welfare Officer goes on to explain, “The SSHH!! Campaign is a new campaign being run this year in GMIT, and follows on from similar successful campaigns in other colleges throughout the country. The aim of the campaign is educate students on the effects of anti-social behaviour, and how to live respectfully in private estates, as some students may have only experienced student-only accommodation. The campaign also aims to highlight the consequences of anti-social behaviour”.

The Students’ Union has issued an email to all students highlighting the seriousness of the matter, and the implications.

SU VICE-PRESIDENT

Hi all,

My name is Sam O’Neill and I am the Vice President & Welfare Offi cer of YOUR Students’ Union for the coming year.

To all returning students I’d like to welcome you all back for another great year here in GMIT. To all the incoming 1st years, I’d like to fi rstly say congratulations on being accepted to your course. You have made a great choice coming to not just Galway but also GMIT. I would like to extend to all of you a very warm welcome to the college. I have spent 3 years in GMIT. These years have been some of the best in my life and I hope this will be the case for you too. I will hopefully get the chance to meet all of you over your time here. Feel free to call to the offi ce for a chat and introduce yourself if you like!

I am here to serve you all to the best of my ability so if there is anything at all I can help you with, don’t hesitate to give me a shout. I will be running campaigns throughout the year to raise awareness and provide information on many areas of your welfare such as mental health, alcohol & drug abuse, road safety and sexual health.

I would encourage everyone to get involved with the Students Union in any way you can. It is a great way to meet new people and develop your skills. One way in which you could do this is to put yourself forward for election as Class Rep. This is where I started and it helped me settle into college life easily. If this doesn’t interest you then watch out for Clubs & Societies that you may be interested in. If we don’t have what you are looking for, then you can by all means set it up. Taking part in these activities are again great ways to meet new people who share the same interests as you.

There will of course be plenty of entertainment provided by us down in the SU. We hope to cater for all students in this area just like we would in all other areas of college life.

Lastly I would just like to say best of luck in the coming year, I look forward to seeing you all!

The Students’ Union are now selling once-off GMIT hoodies celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Institute from the SU Shop, priced at €25. They can be purchased in either purple or maroon. T-shirts will also be available in the coming weeks.

The Students’ Union Head Rep for each School and Campus in GMIT will this year be organising an event for the 40th Anniversary Calendar, in consultation with the class reps in their School/ Campus, and aimed at both staff and students. We have tasked them with formalising dates and ideas for these events in the next two weeks. We have also asked for the events to be held on campus where possible and for the theme to in some way reflect and represent the identity of their School/ Campus. Finally, we will be running an event as part of the 40th Calendar on Wednesday the 28th of November celebrating culture and diversity in GMIT. This will be held at 6pm in Red Square (Room 509- Student Common Area). We hope to have a variety of stalls, music, traditional games, and food celebrating the different cultures and backgrounds of students currently in GMIT.

GMITSU relaunches the Don’t Walk Home Alone Campaign

With the dark evenings closing in, GMIT Students’ Union has re-launched their “Don’t Walk Home Alone”

campaign. The Students’ Union and Pro Cabs have combined in this campaign to ensure students will be at their safest when making the journey home from a college night out.

The campaign allows students, who do not have enough money to pay for their taxi fare, to leave their GMIT student card with Pro Cabs (091-535353), and they will be brought home safely. The student can then call to the Pro Cabs office to collect their card and pay the fare owed.

Sam O’Neill, Vice President/Welfare officer of GMIT Students’ Union, advises everyone to take full advantage of the system and not to take any risks on a night out: “Student safety is a major issue for GMITSU, particularly when students can be quite vulnerable on a night out. This service with Pro Cabs ensures student safety is maintained and we are delighted to be a part of that. This year, to further enhance students’ safety on nights out, we are also incorporating our official club Coyotes into the scheme, whereby Pro Cabs will be on standby for the SU nights in the nightclub on Forster Street”.

GMIT Students’ Union would like to thank Pro Cabs for their support and loyalty in providing this system for student’s welfare. John Murphy from Pro Cabs acknowledged the importance of the scheme, adding that “to get students home safely is enough of a fare for him”. He looks forward to continuing the campaign for years to come.

RTÉ and GMIT form new partnership GMIT is delighted to announce a new partnership with RTÉ involving the GMIT Centre for the Creative Arts & Media (Cluain Mhuire campus). The new agreement will see RTÉ having an on-campus broadcasting facility in the Centre during 2013. An MOU between the two organisations is to be formally approved by the Governing Body at its next meeting (27 Sept). The agreement aims to provide opportunities for GMIT media students to undertake work placements and graduate internships in RTÉ; support and advice from RTÉ

in relation to the development and review of programmes; potential for RTÉ staff as adjunct staff or external examiners; the possibility of creating an Ideas Laboratory in the Centre; and access to new technologies in RTÉ. GMIT President Michael Carmody says: “This collaboration is an important step in establishing the Centre for Creative Arts and Media as a focal point for media-related higher education in Galway. The association with RTÉ and its expertise in modern media technologies will add a new dimension to our B.A. (Hons) in Film & Documentary, along with providing work experience and employment opportunities for our students and graduates". Briefing for local TDs and Senators on new Connacht-Ulster Alliance GMIT, IT Sligo and Letterkenny IT held a briefing in Dublin this week (Wed 19 Sept) for regional TDs and Senators regarding the new Connacht-Ulster alliance which was signed in Castlebar in July in the presence of An Taoiseach Enda Kenny. The MoU aims to enhance collaboration and co-operation between the three Institutes on a range of issues including programme provision; programme delivery including online/blended delivery; shared services and research. The ultimate aim is to achieve Technological University (TU) status. An implementation plan to achieve that objective is currently being prepared. The Presidents and Chairman of the three Institutes briefed TDs and Senators in the two regions on the objectives of the CU Alliance. Parking Permits can now be Purchased Online for the GMIT Dublin Road

from APCOA. Access to this website can be made through the GMIT car parking website link below.

http://www.gmit.ie/presidents-office/parking-dublin-road.html New applicants for permits will be expected to verify their details when collecting Permits. GMIT Parking Policy and Frequently asked Questions are detailed on this website. Also included here are details on the location of the Galwegians Car Park and areas available for GMIT car parking.

APCOA will have a stand in Union Square for first time applicants to collect their Permits, this will happen next week. Applicants are advised what documentation to bring.

Applicants who have applied previously have their Permits posted out.

This will happen on a number of weeks over different days to give those that do not attend on certain days every opportunity.

Students who are in this process will not be clamped during this period as APCOA check the registrations on their database. At the end of the above process is where the SU may be interested in getting involved. Students who have not collected their Permit from the APCOA stand will be advised they can have their Permit validated at the SU desk. This additional collection means is to the advantage of Students. SU will be advised of the documentation to be witnessed before validation. Patrons who continually fail to display a Permit will be clamped even if there is a record of their registration in the system.

Event management students from GMIT School of Business displayed the best of Galway fashion and design in their fashion show held in the Radisson Blu Hotel towards the end of last year.

The third year business degree students organised the fashion show in aid of COPE Galway and included designers from Galway Technical Institute and a range of popular retailers including Born Clothing, Tommy Hilfiger, TK Maxx, Portobello, Jack and Jones, Swamp, Anthony Ryans, Hanleys, Warehouse, Vera Moda, Public Romance and Urban Hand. The students are taking the event management module as part of their Bachelor of Business Degree Programme. The event team consisted of Marina Hoare, Patricia Ciweck, Carolin Hoffman, Mark Teahan, Rebecca Greally, Marie Fontan, Kenny Feeney, Jackie Donohoe, and Sinead Gibbons.

The theme of the fashion show was “Express Yourself” and this is exactly what the students undertook to do on the night. Models were recruited from among the student community in GMIT and were coached by Patricia Ciweck, Marie Fontan, and Kenny Feeney. The students organised the entire event and student team leader Marina Hoare was amazed with the amount of voluntary help she received ‘ I was stunned with the amount of good will and support we received from the Galway community and in particular from Cope Galway, the Catwalk Model Agency, and the Radisson Blu hotel. The production could not have gone ahead without the help of our suppliers including Sound to Light, DJ Ozzy, Darach Photography, our hair and make-up team and Maree Community Development.

The night itself was electric and everyone felt the fantastic energy in the room. The event students, the models and the audience all enjoyed the immense buzz”. The secret was the detailed planning by the event team, “all the late nights and early mornings were worth it” according to team member Patricia Ciweck, “I could not have dreamed of a better night. Planning and managing the fashion show brought together everything I learned in my three years in college, from carrying out market research, financial planning, human resources studies, the fashion show brought all it

all together. We all learned so much about running events but also about working with people, teamwork and leadership. It is a fantastic opportunity to learn by doing and something our event team will never forget”.

MC for the night was iRadio’s broadcaster Fergal D’Arcy who was also full of praise for the fashion show. He said “of all the projects I have been involved with, the professionalism and enthusiasm and effort that the event students demonstrated when organising the fashion show was incredible. Well done to all the GMIT students involved in the show, it was a fantastic success”.

Likewise Fintan Maher, Communications Manager with COPE Galway was delighted with the students work “Congratulations to the event management students on a wonderful fashion show. The whole night was very professional and was a testament to all the hard work the students put in to making it a success. I was delighted that COPE Galway was associated with it and want to thank the students for their fundraising. GMIT and the School of Business should all be very proud”.

Hi everyone,

My name is Joe O’Connor and I’m your Students’ Union President for the upcoming year. Welcome back to those of you returning to GMIT, I hope you all had a great summer. For those of you who are starting in GMIT for the first time, you’re coming to one of the finest IoTs in the country, in the best city in the country, with plenty of friendly people and a great night life, so I’m sure it won’t take you too long to settle in!

The Students’ Union provide a range of different services to students on all campuses in GMIT. If you have any suggestions over the course of the year, please feel free to get in contact with us, because after all, it is YOUR Union, YOUR voice, and YOUR call!

As SU President, I am responsible for the overall running of the Students’ Union. Throughout the year, I will be representing your needs, raising your issues and voicing your concerns in a number of different ways- On a national level through the USI (Union of Students in Ireland), at an Institute level on various different boards and committees and in dealing with college authorities and management, and I also act as the media spokesperson for the Union.

Along with my role as President, I also serve as the Education Officer of the Union. Any issues or problems you face throughout the year academically, in relation to areas such as grants, exams, lectures and timetables, be sure to get in contact with me.

We will also be putting on entertainment for you throughout the year - be it on campus in our Student Common Room ‘Red Square’, in our new local student bar ‘UNION’, or in Galway City in our official late bar and nightclub, Coyotes. Be sure to sign up for GMITSU text alerts and our Facebook page, follow us on Twitter @gmitsu, and keep an eye on www.gmitsu.ie for the latest updates on upcoming GMITSU events!

Finally, GMIT also offers a wide range of clubs and societies to cater for your skills and interests, which are also ran through the Students’ Union. I would encourage each and every one of you to sign up for a club or soc at our Exhibition stands in the opening weeks of college, as it’s a great way to meet new friends, share common interests, keep fit or even represent your college. If you are interested in setting up a new club/society which isn’t currently on offer, get in touch with us and we’ll see what we can do to help!

So if you’ve got any problem or query, big or small, be sure to call down to our offices beside the banks on the Dublin road campus, and we’ll do our very best to help!

This handbook will outline many of these services which we hope will enhance your student experience during your time here at GMIT.

Good luck with the upcoming year and I look forward to seeing you soon!
