Globalizing MOP Network at 14th National & 2nd SAANSO Jamboree

PAKISTAN

A large youth gather-ing – the 14th National & 2nd SAANSO Scout Jamboree – was held from 16th Dec to 23rd of Dec 2014 in Islamabad, Pakistan. It was an ideal opportunity to promote the MOP initiative to thousands of youth par-ticipants.

MOP  was  first  introduced  in Pakistan from the very start but still there was a need to promote the MOP direct to the Scouts. The purpose is to inspire both Scouts and their leaders to join the network and under-take peace actions back in their communities.

MoP targeted to run the MOP module for 5,000 Scouts at the Jamboree. It also played a vital role in providing a practice ground to Scout leaders who were trained at the MoP team Gathering a week before.

The MoP Coordinator

from Boy Scouts of the Philippines was the key resource person to run the MoP module.

Visibly, the team’senthusiastic and friendly approach attracted many young people to the MoP module.

The Pakistan Boy Scout Association (PBSA) organ-ized  a  five-day  MoP  Team  Pakistan Gathering at the Global Village of the PBSA National Headquarters in Islamabad. The gathering was called ‘’Messengers of Peace Team Pakistan Gath-ering’’ which ran from 7th to 11th of December 2014.

The event was designed to promote the Messen-ger of Peace Network in the Asia-Pacific Region. Among a series of MoP events in 2014, the PBSA was the 5th NSO to or-ganize a capacity build-ing exercise for leaders

at the grassroots level. Participants represented 7 out of 10 branch pro-vincial associations of the PBSA, mainly from the Rover Section and adult leaders. World Scout Bureau/Asia-Pacif-ic Regional represented office collaborated with PBSA leaders to organize the event.

Top volunteer and pro-fessional Scout leaders in Pakistan fully support the Messengers of Peace initiative headed by Mr. Abdul Karim Baloch, PBSA Chief Commis-sioner who attended the opening chief guest.

Nepal Scouts has completed the MOP project ‘‘Light in the Darkness (Experiencing Scouting with the orphans)’’). Target of this project are orphanage groups who do not have enough opportunities and resources to learn new skills. Through Scouting, the orphans could join educational and capacity building activities enabling them to learn different skills.

To implement the project, Nepal Scouts trained 60 adults to organize and run 30 new scout units in the orphanage. Other activities include organizing health and peace awareness programs for people in the communities in the form of art competitions and street drama.

Two Cultures United Through Scouting

MONGOLIA

The Scout Association of

Mongolia recently completed a

MoP project relevant to uniting

two cultures through Scouting.

Target of this project is to give

opportunity to 300 Kazak chil-

dren to participate in Scouting.

Together with 300 Mongolian

children, they can teach each

other about their cultures and

traditions.

Deliverables proposed for this

project include translation and

printing of books from Mon-

golian to Kazak (1,000 copies

each for Cub and Scout Sec-

tions) for them to understand

Scouting better in their native

tongue. Twenty adults were

trained as Scout leaders to

run the troops and packs for

Kazak children.

Beneficiaries  of  this  project

are children between 6-15

years old who live in Bayan-

olgii province. Through the

Scouting program, the chil-

dren undertake activities us-

ing the Scout method in ways

that  would  positively  influence

their attitude and keep them

away from vices such as drugs and other anti

social activities.

While Scouting principles are translated to

their native language, the young participants

were also taught the Mongolian language to

help them cope with formal education, with

the expectation that the number of school

dropouts would be reduced.

A Study on the Moderating Effect of a Scout Activity KOREA

6

In August 2014, Korea Scouts Association com-pleted the MoP project “A Study on the moderating effect of a Scout activity”.

This is a project-based research that examines the effect of Scouting activities on social sup-port (parental, teacher and peer support), self-esteem, self-efficacy, social anxiety, depres-sion and problem be-havior of middle school students who have experienced alienation from their peer group. To assess the effects, the research experiment was carried out with a test group and control group in a pre-test/post-test format.

The research subjects consisted of 64 students selected from an urban middle school. All of them experienced al-ienation from their peer group. For purposes of the study, the students were divided into test and control groups of 32 members each.

The Scout activity pro-gram ran from April to September 2013, with the test group partici-pating in 10 sessions of 120 minutes each every other week. Examining change in social support, self-esteem,  self-efficacy,  social anxiety, depression and problem behavior were assessed and the mediating effect of the

activities. Data analysis was car-ried out using the SAS statistics program (Ver-sion 9.3) to perform chi-square testing,t-testing, paired t-test-ing, ANCOVA and Pearson correlation analysis.

This study engaged the students who experi-enced alienation to try out Scouting activities for the  first  time.  The  effects  of this intervention were examined  showing  signifi-cant results and the study confirmed  that  Scouting  activities can improve self-efficacy,  reduce  depres-sion, and decrease some kinds of problem behavior amongst middle school students.

This study could be de-signed as a foundational reference for similar research on introducing Scout activities to middle school students who have experienced peer group alienation, using Scouting as a form of intervention for psychological recovery and social adaptation.

It is also expected that this study will help pro-mote further research into the development and preparation of Scouting activities within schools as a support program for students, enabling them to have healthy school life and positive relationships with their peers.
