• It takes a minimum of 7 years post A level to qualify as an architect

• 33,000 architects in the UK

• We are in still in the worst construction industry recession for 50 years

• Approximately 1500 architects claim job seekers allowance

• Average projected debt of architecture students starting education now, £45K

• ‘Project Architects’ with 3-5 years post-registration experience earn between £34-42,000

• Average house price is £240k – therefore unaffordable to most architects

The short to medium term business model is doesn’t work

Design changes the world

Why do it?

Page 8: Global Entrepreneurship Week Spark conference 2012 Designers as instigators of change 16 th November 2012

• Architecture like other Creative industries does not stand in isolation

• With hindsight you will be able to see what has influenced your generation

• We are part of movements happening now, shaped by our geopolitical context

• What do you want to dedicate your energy, your time and your company to?

What is the most important issue now?

Page 10: Global Entrepreneurship Week Spark conference 2012 Designers as instigators of change 16 th November 2012

The issue

• Global warming is real, its effects can be accurately estimated and its consequences will be felt by many.

• Approximately 50% of all resources consumed on Earth are used in construction.

• Construction is the least sustainable industry in the world. It is going through a period of change.

• Met Office predicts that England’s average temperature will be 9 degrees higher in 2080.

• Our future will be hotter, with less predictable water supplies, more violent storms, more expensive oil and gas and less certain energy supplies

Page 11: Global Entrepreneurship Week Spark conference 2012 Designers as instigators of change 16 th November 2012

The complicating factor

• Here, since the events of 2008 the rate of supply of new homes in London and the south east of England has fallen of a cliff.

• However, population growth is set to bring 1 million more people to London over the next 20 years

• There are 360,000 households on the current social housing waiting list

• all new homes to be carbon zero by 2016, with all new buildings meeting the same standard by 2019.

small part of the solution

• Reduce, re-use, recycle

• Brownfield development

• Build to let - Pension scheme funding

• Density intensification

• Planning/construction legislation

• Renewable energy technologies

• Sustainable design

• Practical responses

• Design buildings now that will accommodate the future climate
