Project components include:
• Build 2 miles of double-circuit 138-kilovolt
(kV) transmission line.
• Build 1 mile of double-circuit 69 kV
transmission line.
• Build a new substation.
• Acquire an approximate 100-foot-wide
right-of-way from landowners.
• Remove Cliffview Substation.
The need for the Glendale Area Improvements
project was identified in PJM Interconnection’s
2021 Winter Analysis. The study found the need
for increased power supply to support demand
during extreme weather conditions. PJM
Interconnection is the regional transmission
organization that monitors the electric grid in 13
states, including Virginia. Building new
transmission infrastructure will strengthen the
local grid and reduce the likelihood of outages.
The project area includes the proposed
substation site off Glendale Road and study
segments that cross Creekview Drive and
continue for about a mile before connecting to
an existing transmission line.
WHAT WHY WHERE
GLENDALEAREA IMPROVEMENTS PROJECT
Appalachian Power plans to increase electric reliability by
making upgrades to the transmission system in southwest
Virginia. The Glendale Area Improvements Project includes
building approximately 3 miles of new transmission line, a new
substation and removing an existing substation to reduce the
likelihood of customer outages. Later this year, Appalachian Power
will file an application with the Virginia State Corporation Commis-
sion seeking approval for the project. If approved, construction is
expected to start in early 2020 and be complete by the summer of
2021. Estimated budget for the project is $40 million.

Appalachian Power will use galvanized steel double-circuit lattice tower structures and monopole structures to construct the new transmission lines. Proposed structures will vary depending on location. Structure Height: Approximately 110 feetRight-of-Way Width: Approximately 100 feet
TYPICAL STRUCTURES
*Substation shown is a general depiction of the proposed facility that will be built for this project. It does not represent final design.
Substations serve as electrical intersections converting the power to voltage levels for use in homes, businesses and industrial facilities.
