SAINT HELEN’S PARISH
29th SUNDAY OF THE YEAR 22nd October 2017
“Give back to Caesar what belongs to Caesar
and to God what belongs to God.”
THE WORD THIS WEEK Questions, or tricks? After 3 weeks of Jesus getting at them, the leaders of the people start a fight-back. But Jesus, a good Jew, also knows how to use questions. Indeed we have more of his questions than straight answers. And they can get right under your skin, or expose equivocation, like these to the Pharisees. Isaiah had taught that there is only one God, and apart from him, all is nothing: Even the rulers are only instruments of his; like Cyrus, a pagan king who unknowingly does God’s work. So work with legitimate authorities, but give to God what belongs to God. – With the psalmist we pray: ‘Give the Lord glory and power’.
TODAY’S SCRIPTURE: (Psalter: Week 1)
Isaiah 45: 1, 4 – 6. I have taken Cyrus by his right hand to subdue nations before him.
Response: Psalm 95. O sing a new song to the Lord,
sing to the Lord all the earth.
Tell among the nations his glory
and his wonders among all the people.
The Lord is great and worthy of praise,
to be feared among all gods;
the gods of the heathens are naught.
It was the Lord who made the heavens.
Give the Lord, you families of peoples,
give the Lord glory and power,
give the Lord the glory of his name.
Bring an offering and enter his courts.
Worship the Lord in his temple.
O earth, tremble before him.
Proclaim to the nations: ‘God is king.’
He will judge the peoples in fairness.
1 Thessalonians 1: 4 – 5. We constantly remember your faith, your love and your hope.
Acclamation for the Gospel:
Alleluia, Alleluia. Alleluia! You will shine in the world like bright stars because you are offering it the word of life. Alleluia, Alleluia. Alleluia!
Matthew 22: 15 – 21. Give back to Caesar what belongs to Caesar – and to God what belongs to God.
Prayer of the Faithful: R/. Lord, judge the peoples in fairness.
The weekend of September 17th/18th, when Father Angelo appealed for the Comboni Missions abroad, was meant to be ‘Home Mission Sunday’ with a collection for evangelisation here at home. This weekend is meant to be ‘Mission Sunday’, with a collection for foreign Missions: Since we missed both, next weekend we will have a retiring collection to split between the two.
