Shrinking Cities is the theme of my thesis project. The city of Bologna in northern Italy has lost more than 200’000 inhabitants in the last 40 years. The city, like many other shrinking cities, has some opportunities to reinvent itself:- it has a strong cultural life even though is not able to host and accommodate all the creative class-about 6% of the municipal land is made of aban-doned lots waiting for redevelopment projects and finances
Temporary use of these abandoned spaces is the right answer to this cultural demand: meeting spaces that are doable and not expensive com-pared to traditional development practices.

Here an empty urban space becomes a new meeting point for the city.A new layer of public and commercial functions that face the central park: a big roof mitigate the constructed environment and collects the sun energy and the rainwater. The nature is present as a characteristic element below the roof with pillars that resembles a forest.

In particular the focus of my design is the reha-bilitation of a silos inside an old city barrack.
Starting from the multicultural condition of the neighbourhood I used the metaphor of the tree as a design motif.
The exterior of the building is left in the actual state while the interiors are redesigned with a system of glass windows that articulates all kind of spaces: public, private, open, closed, working and circulation spaces.

The world aquatics championship held in Rome in 2009 was the starting point for this architectural technology project.
I started the design with a functional and emo-tional analysis that conduced me to some design choices: a duplex solution with locally sourced materials that can induce warm feelings in the athletes hearts.

VolaMIvia (literally flyMEaway) it’s an urban game that wants to make people notice the exces-sive number of cars in Milan
The idea is to create a visual evidence that shows the extreme high quantity of polluting means of transportation and the low number of ecological means giving red and green balloon to the own-ers.
The installation realised during the Design Week 2010, has seen a very high participation and it has been really appreciated by citizens and visitors.

This installation is the result of a school competi-tion. The design goals was to resolve the lack of open-air public spaces in the city of Ferrara. In fact many city squares are now used as park-ing lots and therefore they’re missing their initial function.
For the installation I focused on a city square where I designed a series of urban furniture pieces that resembled the shape of different cars. I picked colorful and soft materials and the furni-tures allow the urban population to sit as well as to listen the sound environment of other squares of the city.

Project selected
urban planning competitionURBANPROMO 2009
URBANPROMO fair held in November 2007 in Venice, Italy.
URBANPROMO promotes urban and territorial marketing and it’s organized by INU.The project has been selected between other projects designed by engineering and architec-ture students.
With the professor M.Venturi D’Este we have elaborated the work we began during the urban-ism class I followed in 2008. The project proposes an ecological corridor in the city of Rimini that could connect behind the city the two green belts that already exist.

The interior design brief from the professor con-sisted in a function and scale for the project.
Then the focus was on the definition of the draw-ing style, the use of the colors and different color-ing techniques.
