Scott Gillespie, Commercialization Partner, Technology to VC (T2VC)

Scott is currently the Founder and Managing Partner of the Jigsaw Group, an early stage investment and

advisory group as well as the Commercialization Partner for T2VC, a team that manages a technology venture

fund and architects innovation ecosystems in emerging markets. Scott shares his insights and experiences

at conferences, seminars, networking events, angel groups, universities and non-profits where he lectures

on innovation & entrepreneurship, strategic marketing and management, risk management and environment

management. Scott also supports Yacht Aid Global (YAG), a nonprofit that transports education and medical

supplies to regions struck by disaster using mega yachts.

Sinikka Antila, Ambassador of the Embassy of Finland to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Sinikka Antila has been the Head of Mission for the Embassy of Finland in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania since January

2011. Previously, Antila was the Head of Mission for the Embassy of Finland in Lusaka, Zambia for four years.

Antila has also served as Director for Development Policy and Planning at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of

Finland. Antila received her Masters of Law from Helsinki University in Finland. She speaks English, French,

Swedish, and German.

Philippe Dongier, Country Director for Burundi, Tanzania & Uganda, The World Bank

A Canadian national, Philippe Dongier joined the Bank in 1998 as a Senior Private Sector Development Specialist

in the Transport, Urban and Water Department. He has worked in Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe and

Africa. He worked as Manager for Afghanistan Reconstruction in 2002-2004. His latest assignment (2006-

2012) was as Sector Manager, Information and Communication Technologies, leading World Bank support to

telecommunications and ICT policy reforms and programs globally.

Before joining the Bank, Dongier worked for five years with McKinsey & Company in Canada, the United

States, Asia, and Europe, advising companies and governments on issues of strategy and organizational reform,

including in the telecommunications and information technology (IT) industries. Earlier, he was based in Nepal

for six years, where he worked for the Canadian Center for International Cooperation (CECI) in support of

community infrastructure and microfinance programs. He has a master’s degree in business administration from

INSEAD and a bachelor’s in economics from McGill University.

Jeff Hoffman, Member of Founding Group & Former CEO, Priceline.com, Founder, ColorJar & GIST Advisory Group Member

Jeff Hoffman is an accomplished entrepreneur and innovator in the fields of Internet, e-commerce, and

entertainment; since launching his first software company while still in university, Hoffman has founded, grown,

and exited a series of successful startup companies throughout his career, including Enable Holdings, Black Sky

Entertainment, and Priceline. Hoffman dedicates significant time to mentoring other entrepreneurs and is an

accomplished professional and motivational speaker; he has presented in over 40 countries worldwide and can

be seen on Fox News, CNN, NBC, and other major media outlets.

Faysal Sohail, Venture Capitalist, CMEA Capital

Faysal Sohail has over a decade of senior executive experience in engineering, marketing, business development

and building startups, helping to secure venture capital funding for several key startups in both the energy

and technology sectors. Before joining CMEA, Mr. Sohail helped to build three companies all of which became

successful through IPO, merger or acquisition. Sohail is a member on the board of American Pakistan Foundation,

an organization that engages the diaspora and the private sector and by building partnerships with key

stakeholders in the U.S. and Pakistan.

Dr. Jonathan Margolis, Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Science, Space and Health in the

Department of State’s Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs

Dr. Margolis currently oversees policies and programs in the areas of international science & technology cooperation, space

& advanced technologies, and international health and biodefense at the Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental

and Scientific Affairs (OES), the latest position of his distinguished career within the State Department working in a number

of divisions including: the Bureau of International Information Programs, the Office of the Director of Foreign Assistance, and

the Office of Science and Technology Cooperation. He has also conducted courses at American University and the Foreign

Service Institute on environmental policy, negotiations, and international organizations.

Ambassador Alfonso E. Lenhardt, Ambassador of the United States of America to the United Republic of TanzaniaThe Ambassador of the United States of America to the United Republic of Tanzania, Alfonso E. Lenhardt, presented his

diplomatic credentials to President Jakaya Kikwete at the State House in Dar es Salaam on Thursday, November 12, 2009. On

May 19, 2010, Ambassador Lenhardt was also accredited as the U.S. representative to the East African Community.

From May 2004, Ambassador Lenhardt was the President and CEO of the non-profit National Crime Prevention Council

(NCPC). He was also Senior Vice President of Government Relations for The Shaw Group. On September 4, 2001,

Ambassador Lenhardt was appointed the 36th Sergeant-at-Arms of the United States Senate and became the first African-

American to serve as an officer of the Congress. He also served as the executive vice president and chief operating officer of

the Council on Foundations. Ambassador Lenhardt retired from the U.S. Army in August 1997 as a Major General with more

than 30 years of service in leadership positions. Ambassador Lenhardt was born in New York City and holds a Bachelor of

Science degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Nebraska, a Master of Arts in Public Administration from Central

Michigan University, and a Master of Science in the Administration of Justice from Wichita State University.

GIST BOOT CAMP MENTORS Emanuel Feruzi, Co-Founder/Developer, HUB26 CompanySharing information and skills comes natural to Emanuel Feruzi, who has been working with computers since 1997. As a professor of IT at the Institute of Finance Management, Feruzi has shared tips and tricks, standards and best practices for effective way to develop software. As an entrepreneur, Feruzi shares not only stories of his successes but also mistakes he made along the way.

Kristiina Lahde, Chief Technical Advisor, TANZICTKristiina Lähde has a long experience with ICT, innovation and entrepreneurship in Finland, South Africa and Tanzania. She has worked for international corporations and SMEs, successfully raised venture capital for a startup, and helped other companies to do so. Before moving to Africa she was an incubator manager in Finland. Kristiina’s current job is Chief Technical Advisor of TANZICT project in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. She holds a Masters of Science degree in Engineering from Aalto University, School of Engineering.

Robert Mbori, Managing Director, Ascent ConsultingRobert Mbori is a Business Development Consultant & Entrepreneur. He comes from a sales and marketing background that has seen him involved in diverse companies in different capacities over the past 20 years. His business philosophy is captured by Napoleon Hill, “Whatever the mind can conceive & believe, it can achieve.”

Michael Niyitegeka, Business Development Consultant, Hive ColabMichael possesses a cumulative 15 years working experience in private and public sectors. Currently, Michael works with CEMM Group as a Franklin Covey Certified Facilitator. Michael has previously worked with Makerere University for the last 12 years most recently as the Head of Corporate Relations Office at the College of Computing and Information Sciences. He has previously worked with the private sector specifically in the coffee exporting industry in different capacities. Michael holds an MBA from MsM and ESAMI Business School. He is an Adjunct Lecturer with the ESAMI Business School Michael is a consultant trainer in a wide-range of areas in the both business and IT but specifically he is passionate about Leadership at Personal & Institutional level, IT Strategy and Management, Social Media Integration, and Business Process definition facilitation. As part of his social responsibility Michael has participated in the six hackathon events hosted in Uganda as a Mentor, Judge or Organizer. Michael has mentored businesses from Kenya, Uganda and most recently the USA. Michael is a Rotarian and loves giving back to society.

Rosemary MwakitwangeRosemary is a seasoned and accomplished executive and strategic thinker with demonstrated ability to navigate obstacles, motivate people, and deliver results in highly challenging environments. She has extensive experience across NGO and private sectors including Academy for Education Development, Population Service International, and New Habari Media Group. She has particular expertise in fund mobilization and management of large-scale donor funded programs and high-powered lobbying and advocacy for media policies, HIV prevention, sustainability, program monitoring and evaluation. She has written the handbook, ‘The Business of Media: The Missing Link to Press Freedom in Africa’, and ‘The Business of Journalism’. She is a member of the UN AIDS Advisory Group on Female Condoms and a lead on the study on a mapping out the change process and dynamics for policy reforms in Tanzania.

Ayubu L Sizya, Monitoring and Evaluation Manager - Tanzania Gender Networking Programme Ayubu Sizya is the Monitoring and Evaluation Manager of TGNP and is responsible for the direction and strategy of the organization. His entrepreneurial and multi‐disciplinary career encompasses strategic and business planning, monitoring and evaluation, fund raising, and programme coordination of established and startup ventures in a variety of industries both domestically and abroad. Mr. Sizya received his Master in Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development from University of Dar es Salaam and BSc (Hon.) in Computer Science from University of North London, London, UK.

Peter Ulanga, Chief Executive Officer, Universal Communications Access FundCommunications Service Access Fund; he previously worked at the Tanzania Communication Regulatory Authority with responsibility on ICT development, telecom standards, and management of the National Numbering Plan. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Engineering from University of Dar es Salaam, a Master’s degree in Business Administration from University of Southern Queensland, Australia and Master’s degree in Science from University of Essex in United Kingdom. His professional interests are in rural communications, passive optical networks on the access, and next generation networks deployments. He also has keen interest on issues related to Internet governance, ICT for sustainable development and ICT economics particularly on interconnection. He is current Chairman of the Association of Universal Service Access Funds of Africa (AUSAFA) and Associate Rapporteur of Question 22 (responsible for low cost network infrastructure in developing countries) of Study Group 5 in International Telecommunication Union’s Standardisation Sector. He is a part-time lecturer at the College of ICT of the University of Dar es Salaam.

Marco J. Vingilah, Director, Sustainable Access Finance EnterprisesMr. Vingilah has professional experience as an enterprise and business growth specialist in the fields of finance, project design, marketing planning and management. In support of business clients, he has carried out many feasibility studies, business reviews, business plans, consumer surveys and training assignments. He has an in-depth and first hand experiences with the use of market information to guide business development and an entrepreneurial approach to solutions for client’s problems. His key competencies are strategic planning, organizational development, project and product design and implementation.

Nina Werner, Country Director, Mara Foundation TanzaniaHaving Swedish parents but a mother born and raised in Kenya, Nina was raised in France, although born in Switzerland. She studied for her Bachelor in Life Science in Lausanne, Switzerland, and now holds an MSc in Management, Technology and Economics from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. The travel bug caught her in her early years and hasn’t left her so far. Having travelled to most European countries, India, or China, she finally decided to move to Tanzania over two years ago and pursue the amazing opportunities that this country has to offer. Along the way, she got the opportunity to be part of Mara Foundation and bring this very unique organisation to Tanzania’s entrepreneurs.

Sabancı has built his successful career in international finance, joining Esas Holding Corporation in 2004, the same year advancing to his current position at Pegasus Airlines when it was purchased by Esas; he is also on the board of Esas’s partner companies Izair Corporation and Air Berlin as well as being a member of TYD, TÜSIAD, ISO and TAIK. Since 2009, Sabancı has also been a director of Air Berlin PLC & Co. Luftverkehrs KG and Air Berlin Plc, and of AFM Uluslararasi Film Produksiyon A.Ş.

H.R.H. Prince Saud Bin Khalid Al-Faisal, Deputy Governor for Investment AffairsSaudi Arabian General Investment Authority HRH Prince Saud K Al-Faisal heads the Investment Affairs department, which is responsible for managing the investment environment and competitiveness agenda of Saudi Arabia; he has been the President of the National Competitiveness Center since 2010 and he is on the board of: Saudi Industrial Property Authority (MODON), King Faisal Foundation, the Global Federation of Competitive Councils, and several other government commissions and regional investment councils. Previously he worked as a financial analyst with Saudi Aramco in the treasury, internal auditing, new business development, and related financial departments.

Dr. Pat Dinneen, Managing Director, Siguler Guff & CompanyDr. Pat Dinneen has focused on emerging markets for most of her 36-year career with responsibilities in due diligence, selection and monitoring of funds and co-investments, performance benchmarking, research, and client advisory work. Before beginning her current position at Siguler Guff & Company in 2004, managing their $2 billion BRIC private equity investments, she worked with Cambridge Associates, British Telecommunications (BT), and Hughes Communication to expand their business ventures into emerging European and Asian markets.

Dr. Roger Wyse, Managing Director & General Partner, Burrill & CompanyDr. Roger Wyse has led the development of agriculture, nutraceuticals, health & wellness, and industrial biotechnology projects at Burrill & Company, a leading life sciences company managing $1 billion in venture capital. Dr. Wyse chairs or serves on the boards of 11 private companies and has over 30 years of experience as an internationally recognized scientist and dean at two major research universities; he speaks globally about biotechnology applications and policy in food, agricultural and bio-cleantech and the use of venture capital as a component of an open innovation strategy for emerging economies.

Nolan Bushnell, Founder, Atari Corporation, Chuck E. Cheese Pizza and BrainrushNolan Bushnell is a technology pioneer, entrepreneur and scientist. Mramba Mkange has a wide experience in SMEs businesses and financial management. He was very instrumental in the Savings and Credit Societies modernization program initiated by SCCULT as a consultant and also participated actively in the SMES capacity building program carried out by SELF project under the Vice President Office and the International Labor Organization (ILO). He also carried out several capacity building programs in financial management and best practice through the Prime Minister’s Office Regional Administration and Local Governments throughout Tanzania and is an accredited LGAs trainer by GIZ.

SAFARI YETU (safariyetu.com) has developed a web and mobile- based ticketing system for Intercity Bus ticketing that replaces an inaccurate, inefficient, paper-based booking process enabling bus operators to manage seat inventories accurately, track sales, and reduce loss. Most Tanzanians & other Africans travel long distances by bus, but booking bus travel is difficult, time-consuming, and inefficient. Safari Yetu uses cloud computing to provide its services. The service is high performance, and offers high availability while still remaining cost effective. Operator costs of entry are relatively low as they do not pay any upfront costs, and only pay as they use the system. The system won the StartUp World 2012 organized by partners of Google and will be travelling to Silicon Valley before July 2013 for an international pitch all expenses paid for by the organizer. MagilaTech (www.magilatech.net) is developing a variety of applications enabling ordinary and disabled citizens greater participation in government, in particular mobile eParliament. Mobile parliament allows ordinary Tanzanian citizens to listen to parliamentary discussions from the convenience of their mobile phone, anytime they want, without incurring any phone or airtime charges, from wherever they are, even in the most remote areas of the country, as long as there is cellular service. This application will allow streaming of parliamentary debates and allow the listening citizenry to give views/comments in real time based on the pronouncements of the parliamentarians in the august house. The startup was honored to be one of the finalists in the Startup World Tanzania, and was a key representative of Tanzania at IT World Conference in Dubai. His pitch there earned him a cover page on the esteemed IT Africa magazine.

What lessons do you believe entrepreneurs can get from GIST Startup Boot Camps? That a bootcamp is but one part of the learning process for entrepreneurs. One of the best things I have seen in the last two GIST boot camps I have been involved in is the recognition that a stronger core team (multiple co-founders) is better than a cofounder trying to do everything. GIST Mentors have assisted a number of ventures/founders to look at joining forces with others so they have a stronger team.

Do you have any advice for young entrepreneurs? Become a co-founder, build a team focused on solving a problem (rather than building a product and looking for markets), and learn from others quickly rather than trying to learn/experience everything yourself.

What is the best part of being an entrepreneur? I prefer to focus on founders as they are the engines of ventures. Founders attempt to solve, unsolved market challenges, through the creation of products/solutions and ventures to deliver same.

Heart Attack Monitor Wins US Startup Contest for Middle East

Most Middle East entrepreneurs can only dream of a startup oasis such as California’s Silicon Valley that is filled

with angel investors and venture capitalists. But a few entrepreneurs have begun receiving funding from a more

unlikely source - the U.S. government. One of those entrepreneurs, Ziad Sankari, was just 17 when he lost his father

to a heart attack. Today, the Lebanese engineer is building a startup based on a medical device that can monitor

cardiac patients outside the hospital around the clock. His startup idea won a first place prize of $20,000 in the final rounds of the U.S.-sponsored

GIST Tech-I Competition held in Istanbul last December. That funding from the U.S. State Department may help Sankari and his colleague, Najwa

Sahmarani, develop a business plan for their “Cardio Diagnostics” startup. The competition also provided business mentoring by flying in experts

from MIT and Silicon Valley. “GISTech was our shortcut towards better connections and visibility and provided us, indeed, with some cash and

unmatchable opportunities to visit Silicon Valley and possibly find a collaborator there,” Sankari said.

Increasing Opportunities for Early-Stage EntrepreneursIn the search for entrepreneurs with innovative technology ideas that can address a problem affecting their country or region, the Global Innovation through Science and Technology (GIST) Initiative has implemented the GISTech-I Competition, attracting close to 200 teams from the Middle East, Africa, and Central and South East Asia. Among them was CardioDiagnostics, a Lebanese startup founded by Ziad Sankari. Ziad lost his father at the age of 17 to a heart attack, which inspired him to create a medical device that monitors cardiac patients outside the hospital around the clock. This idea earned him a top prize of the competition awarded at the Second Global Entrepreneurship Summit on December 3-5, 2011 in Istanbul, Turkey. CardioDiagnostics has been given a strong start for a global success with $20,000 in seed funding, hands-on training with serial entrepreneurs and business mentors, global media exposure by MSNBC and Wired Magazine, an upcoming trip to Silicon Valley and participation in the MIT Global Startup Workshop.

Providing Access to Capital The “ecoFridge,” a revolutionary refrigeration system used to transport perishable products, was developed by a team of Ukrainian scientists with a U.S. business partner who participated in a CRDF Global research and development grant competition. CRDF Global provided training and mentorship to the team to prepare them to effectively pitch the ecoFridge at a venture forum in Los Angeles, CA. As a result, the team obtained $2.2 million of follow-on capital investment to develop their business, and EcoFridge is now being adopted by companies around the world who appreciate its environmental benefits and cost efficiency.

Transforming Technology Transfer in Russia CRDF Global has trained more than 300 technology transfer managers and assisted eight leading research universities with establishing technology transfer offices, which significantly contributed to the establishment of the local innovation ecosystem. The Programs include professional skills development seminars, workshops, academia and industry international conferences, and site visits to the United States for technology transfer professionals. The Dar Teknohama Business Incubator (DTBi) promotes the growth of ICT technology-based emerging companies contributing to job creation and enhanced economic health of the nation.

The incubator serves as a hub for technology start-ups and actively identifies and provides for the value-added services required to support incubator clients’ success. Turning an idea into a profitable business requires a lot, DTBi provides the valuable support entrepreneurs need. DTBi assists startups and early stage ICT companies by lowering the cost of business and increasing the chances of business survival by providing access to shared resources, facilitating access to finance and markets through credible support, guidance and business management, and etworking for technical trends and opportunities to access markets.

Monetizing high-tech businessesOur intention is to create a dynamic eco-system to monetize innovative high-tech companies and support creative ICT entrepreneurs in Tanzania. We are business driven but a “Not-for-Profit” entity. The Incubator has its own Board whose members come from the Private Sector (including Banking sector), Government, Civil Society, Academia and Telecommunications sectors.

A New Optimism for Startups in Africa

Six of the world’s ten fastest-growing economies over the past decade were in Sub-Saharan Africa. As the continent’s population becomes increasingly educated and affluent, the global business community is looking to capitalize on the increase in human and financial resources in the region. At the same time, real startups are being created in Africa, developing real-world solutions worthy of investment and global attention. The awakening of the African economy provides an opportunity for global and African entrepreneurs and enterprises to forge partnerships for mutual benefit. In recognition of Africa’s economic emergence, the U.S. Department of State, in collaboration with Microsoft, Nokia, DEMO, infoDev, the U.S. Agency for International Development, the African Development Bank, and Startup Weekend, launched Liberalizing Innovation Opportunity Nations, or LIONS@FRICA at the 2012 World Economic Forum on Africa. This new public-private partnership seeks to enhance and deepen the startup and innovation ecosystems of targeted fast-growing African economies.

CREDIBILITY launching an awareness-raising campaign to bring credibility to Africa’s emerging innovation and startup ecosystem.

DEMO AFRICA | A pan-African launchpad for emerging technology and trends. The event is geared towards identifying leading innova-tors and supporting fast-growing technology startups. Hand-selected classes of new products are intro-duced to the world for the very first time to global press and prolific bloggers; investors; corporate acquirers; strategic partners and buyers.

MEET THE LIONS | An event where selected African start-ups will be given the opportunity to present their business plans to prominent African entrepreneurs and business executives in an effort to secure an investment.

VC ROUNDTABLES | A roundtable aimed at providing venture capitalists with an opportunity to engage with the investor community and explore tech sector investment opportunities.

GIST BOOTCAMP | The Global Innovation through Science and Technology (GIST) program builds capacity for young scientists and technology entrepreneurs to translate innovative technologies into new products, companies, and jobs.

STARTUP WEEKENDS | A series of 54-hour hands-on experiential events where developers, designers, marketers, product managers and startup enthusiasts come together to share ideas, form teams, build products, and launch startups.

APPS4AFRICA | A competition that supports African social entrepreneurs who use technology to solve societal prob-lems. The competition brings together the public and private sector, universities, NGOs, and African technology innova-tors for collaborative workshops, with the goal of creating new mobile, web, and desktop applications that address local challenges.

Innovative, technology-driven Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) in Africa, Asia, and Europe & Central Asia are now benefiting from a new partnership between the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland, Nokia, and infoDev – the global development financing program housed within the World Bank Group’s Financial and Private Sector Development Network (FPD) - a joint group of the World Bank and the International Finance Corporation. The €12.9 million program Creating Sustainable Businesses in the Knowledge Economy focuses on enhancing the competitiveness of emerging market SMEs in the information and communication technologies (ICT) and agribusiness sectors in particular. The program also employs the use of the mobile communications platform to grow content, services and applications for developing countries. The three partner organizations created the program to foster the adoption of ICT technologies and innovative, technology-driven business models in developing countries. This approach is known to have a transformative, long-lasting effect on economically, socially and environmentally sustainable development efforts.
