• GeoReach is the name given to the expeditionary site mapping (ESM) capability that involves sharing both classified and unclassified information of potential and actual forward operating locations (FOL).

Maneuver Control System

• The Maneuver Control System (MCS) provides Army users worldwide with tools enabling them to understand the battlefield situation, plan actions, and achieve the commander’s objectives.

• On the battlefield, the COP() provides real-time global positioning system (GPS) data on the locations of tanks, field artillery and missile defense sites.

GeoRover Tools for ArcGIS

• GeoRover software enables soldiers, field agents, emergency responders, defense attachés, combat engineers and civil support teams to together actionable intelligence in geospatial context.

• Intelligence data can be quickly imported from multiple sources and displayed in ArcGIS. In the field, data in the form of pictures, video clips, and sound recordings can be linked on digital maps for subsequent intelligence analysis.

• The flying community can use Geo Base as a backdrop for approach and departure corridors on airfields.

Digital Topographic Support System

• DTSS provides updated geospatial data and analysis that can be merged with real-time military intelligence to provide mission planners, battlefield commanders, and war fighters with unprecedented situational awareness.

• Current DTSS systems use ESRI ArcGIS, Leica® ERDAS® IMAGINE®, and Skyline Terra Explorer® integrated with the Army Battle Command System (ABCS) software suite.

Situation Geographic Information System (SGIS)

• Developed within the AQUA project at the Swedish National Defense College (SNDC).

• The SIGIS command and control support system is a Web based client & server approach to handling presentation and management of the operational and tactical picture

adapted to different military arenas (e.g., joint, ground, air, and sea).

• Through the intuitive interface, the Identification tool can be used to learn more about an object´s attributes (for example, tactical graphic objects with attributes such as speed, direction, sensor and weapon ranges).

• Enables realistic scenarios and easy to learn and handle.

Stryker Brigade Combat Team System

• The Stryker BCT system consists of a Web-based front end ,a spatial database, and a Web-based viewer with query and print capabilities.

• The Stryker BCT system directly supports the global war on terrorism through the development of an enterprise framework of geospatial intelligence technology for the Army.

• Benefits:1. It simplifies the workflow by allowing the soldier collecting the data

to input directly to the system.2. It uses default values and subtypes to prevent misclassification of

features and domain lists to improve data quality3. Web-based data entry form for the direct entry of field data

Military Terrain Analysis II, TERRA II

• TERRA II is a second-generation tool for terrain analysis designed for and used by the Finnish Army. TERRA I, developed in 1999, was the first GIS-based terrain analysis used by the Finnish Army.

• The TERRA II requirements included real-time analysis, vehicle parameter control, vector-to-raster capability, and data distribution.

• TERRA II functionality works on ArcGIS 9.x Desktop with the ArcGIS Spatial Analyst extension.

• Terrain models include data layers such as soil trafficability, soil carrying capacity, slope, timber volumes, frost carrying capacity (especially on swamps), ice, and snow.

GIS for Navigation Planning• A GIS was developed to centralize

most relevant information and help navigators be aware of what is available for specific areas of interest.

• Layers were stored in a personal geo database in six thematic datasets: environment, base map, administrative limits, technical limits, chart coverage, and navigation information.

• More than 50 layers of thematic data were collected including several chart folios, baseline, underwater cables, magnetic declination, search and rescue areas, main seaports, main ocean routes, sea climatology, major ocean currents, bathymetry, political boundaries, and satellite images of main ports.

Filtering GIS Displays with Semantic Lenses

• An alternative to toggling layers on and off is semantic lensing, which is a localized, “detail-on demand” filtering strategy.

• Completion times of geospatial analyses are significantly faster when using lenses and workloads are significantly lower.

• Semantic lenses are used by GIS analysts to understand relationships between multiple layers of data simultaneously.
