2. Cycling in Girona

Cycling activity in Catalonia, and particularly in Girona, has significantly increased in recent years. The region’s large number of cycle paths and routes together with its pleasant climate are increasingly capturing the attention of cyclists from all over the world.

Girona Province has offered cyclists an extensive network of greenways since the end of the 1990s, and currently boasts 125 kilometres of dedicated cycle-tourism and hiking routes. These cycle routes cross five of the eight Girona Counties: Baix Empordà, Gironès, La Selva, Garrotxa and Ripollès.

This network has been recognised on several occasions with European awards, such as runner-up in the European Greenways Awards in 2003, and winner of the Exemplary Initiatives Award in 2011.

Together, these routes and the region’s excellent tourist facilities and attractions are helping to gradually increase the number of national and international users and visitors.

By way of an example, during 2014 counters dotted along the greenways and Pirinexus trail in Empordà recorded more than a million uses at only seven specific points along these routes.

4. 5th International Congress on the Bicycle

Since 2007, the Catalan Government’s Territory and Sustainability Department (DTES) has been hosting the meetings of the Bicycle Committee, a group made up of all kinds of public and civil society organisations linked to the cycling world. Until now the Bicycle Committee has promoted four congresses dealing with different fields affecting the sector.

Recently, the Department received a request from the Bicycle Committee to organise a fifth congress focused on sustainable mobility and the great economic potential of cycle tourism, which is linked to an activity that respects nature and enables the entire Catalan territory to participate equally.

Over the years, Girona City Council has introduced some very active policies to promote bicycle use as a key element of urban mobility, including the introduction of a public bicycle system named Girocleta, a network of cycle lanes throughout the city and many other actions linked to fostering sustainable and safe mobility in the city.

Girona Provincial Council is a member of the Consortium that manages Fira de Girona and one of its objectives is to support actions in the Girona Counties that promote the economy and tourism in its municipalities, such as the introduction of more sustainable forms of mobility.

These three administrations therefore decided to support the 5th International Congress on the Bicycle, which will be held in the city of Girona on 30 April and 1 May, as a complement to the fair Girona Bike World, enabling both events to benefit from the synergies generated.

5. The Pirinexus 360 Challenge

The Pirinexus 360 Challenge presents a new epic test of endurance along the Girona Counties’ roads and trails.Twenty hours to complete almost 350 kilometres on a course that combines asphalt and dirt tracks in a personal challenge held as part of Girona Bike World. On 2 May at six o’clock in the morning the participants will set off on the Pirinexus 360 Challenge. They will have until two o’clock the following morning to complete this 350-kilometre circular route that encompasses asphalted roads, greenways and trails. This challenge was created as part of the first edition of Girona Bike World, the bicycle fair to be held in the city of Girona at the beginning of May this year.

This long distance brevet challenge will take the riders along the PIRINEXUS trail, which passes through the Catalan counties of Garrotxa, Empordà and Gironès in addition to a large section along French trails that will take them close to the town of Ceret. The circular route can be completed individually or in teams of three cyclists and connects with the gravel-based race tradition that is currently extremely popular in the United States.
