Spending Christmas Eve with my family in our hot tub.


Our bulldogs, Tristen and Priscilla. I gave Tristen as a gift to my son, Bennett, and gave Priscilla as a gift to my wife after Tristen had been in our family for about a year.


When my sons each turned 8, respectively, I took them on a father-son trip to whatever country they wanted to visit. Sam and I spent a week in Japan, and Bennett and I spent a week in France and Monaco. Afterwards, the boys created photo albums as mementos of the experience. Those photo albums are the best gifts I’ve ever received.


Time is my most limited resource, so whenever I get to spend more time with my wife and children, I’d consider that the most unique and valuable gift I can be given!

Well, there’s nothing like spending time with your family and friends, although skiing (with family, of course) in rugged Austria isn’t the worst way to enjoy the holidays, either.


It has to be the blue bicycle we gave to my then five-year-old son, Sebastian, although I’m not sure whether he was more excited about the bike, or the balloons attached to it. Anyway, the best part was the gift I received back when I saw Sebastian’s smile light up his face.


Honestly, I’m not too big on receiving gifts. I prefer the rewarding feeling that comes with giving them. How could I not be? Take a look at Sebastian’s smile!


Nothing comes to mind! In my book, giving far exceeds receiving.


I cook a duck with brown pepper and orange sauce each year. I don’t follow a recipe, and change it up each time by throwing a new spice or ingredient in—I’m a huge believer that more is better! Bet you couldn’t tell.


AirPods: I can’t live without them—especially during the week. And not just because we’ve been called the AirPods of hearing aids. In fact,I can’t remember the last time I took them out!

C: My sisters and I all get matching pajamas from our parents on Christmas eve and wear them to bed and Christmas morning. We take a picture every year.

A: My mom (sometimes with our help!) makes traditional ravioli with a recipe from her northern Italian family.


C: I wrote and decorated dozens of teenie tiny little notes to my fiancée for his birthday a couple of years ago and hid them all over his room.

A: I just sent the book Power-Up by Magdelena Yesil to a female founder I met with.


C: My family loves giving gifts that you can “learn.” There’s something nice about introducing a totally new hobby or pastime.

A: I think the best gift is something that someone really wants but wouldn’t buy for themselves. One year, I really wanted a bathrobe and my mom went to 5 different stores to feel the bathrobes to find the softest one.

Definitely the food. I know that sounds cliche, but I’m from Texas which means the actual food we eat on the holidays is a little bit different. A lot less ham and a lot more BBQ. My favorite BBQ dish is homemade sausage with lots and lots of hot sauce. And, of course, eating it surrounded by my family.


I’m really into giving people gifts that’ll improve their daily life (even if they’re not as exciting to open). For example, I think Bose noise-canceling headphones are the perfect gift. They’re expensive enough that people are hesitant to buy them for themselves, but they’re a real game changer whether your recipient works in an open office, travels a lot, or just simply needs peace and quiet.


My Away suitcase, it really does live up to the hype and make packing less stressful. Combine that with my noise-cancelling headphones and travel is just more enjoyable.


A gift card to Barry’s Bootcamp. It made me feel a little guilty eating all that BBQ knowing that I had a plan in place for after the holidays.


Tamales—it’s a Texas tradition to eat them on Christmas Eve and a close family friend makes pork tamales that are the best I’ve ever eaten. Not that I’m biased at all...

My family does a massive Indian thanksgiving with a big part of the Indian community in Beaverton. We’ve been doing that since I was little. It’s a vegetarian thanksgiving :) It’s a great opportunity to see everyone I grew up with, and I love that we make the tradition our own.

My most memorable gift from childhood was when I got a giant Knex set for Christmas—I was expecting a jewelry box but my parents are not ones for gender norms :) and even though I was initially mad that I didn’t get a jewelry box, the Knex set ended up being one of my favorite activities and I still have it.

My wife and I hosting Thanksgiving at our home. It began with just the two of us in our small apartment 11 years ago and over the years has included friends and family from far and wide.


A birthday trip to Coachella for my wife. We were amongst the older fans but it was a fantastic experience —especially seeing Beyoncé’s out-of-this-world set.


My first Nintendo console, received when I was a little kid. I wasted the hours away playing Super Mario.


A few years ago, a friend sent me all the ingredients for his signature Manhattan recipe, including glasses. It was both personal and unique.

We know the biggest ideas — the inventions that move us forward as a society — have come from people who are truly different from the masses. We love being different at Maveron and seek out others who embrace the non-normal. This Giving Tuesday we will give to the Anti-Defamation League that stops anti-Semitism and defends the Jewish people. ADL also fights threats to our very democracy, including cyberhate, bullying, bias in schools and in the criminal justice system, terrorism, hate crimes, coercion of religious minorities, and contempt for anyone who is different.

‘SHIPS OVER ‘ACTIONS

At Maveron, we’re about relationships over transactions. We’re about creating trusted relationships and being there when our entrepreneurs need help. This holiday season we’re donating to My New Red Shoes which provides kids in San Francisco and Portland with new shoes throughout the school year. The organization also helps support kids and their parents with improved attendance, inclusion, and self-esteem.

We want everyone to have a chance to achieve greatness, but recognize that not everyone starts on an even playing field. Hidden Genius Project mentors black male youth in technology creation, entrepreneurship, and leadership to transform their lives and communities

Win the right way. Maveron is fiercely competitive and driven to succeed, but not at the cost of our integrity or values. We think that’s the right way to live and so does Friends of the Children, which supports youth most likely to drop out of school and mentors them to college. The organization has chapters in all the US cities where we have companies. The kids in their programs might be founders of Maveron companies one day.
