Golf
Edwardsville’s Moore, who had three birdies. “I was just trying to hit fairways and greens. I played well and did what I was trying to do, and things worked out.
“I was hitting my driver right down the middle of the fairway and I two-putted almost every hole. It takes me about two weeks to get back into golf shape after baseball. I’m pretty athletic, so I can learn from my mistakes.”
EHS, which also had a 74 from Trevor Laub and a 75 from Ian Bailey to sweep the top three scores, won the team title with a four-man score of 302. Runner-up Granite City was 16 strokes behind at 318.
Alton was third among large schools with a score of 336 while Triad (338), Highland (350) and Collinsville (404) rounded out the team standings.
Defending champion Mar-quette won the small-school
championship with a score of 347, easily outdistancing runner-up Metro-East Lutheran (375).
The second half of the tour-nament was played in a steady light rain, with intermittent rain earlier in the day. But it didn’t stop Edwardsville from earning its eighth straight large-school championship.
Nate Frey, with an 80, round-ed out the scoring for Edwards-ville while teammates Tyler Janson and Mark Tucker shot 81 and 82, respectively.
“If you talk to golfers, they would rather play in the rain than play in the wind,” EHS coach Adam Tyler said. “The wind was down a little bit, but the rain was up. It wasn’t ideal conditions, but it could have been worse. The course was in very good shape and we always love playing here.
“I wasn’t sure what to expect with this group because we don’t have the depth that we had last year or previous years. But we showed we still have some depth. When our worst score is an 82, that’s fantastic.”
Laub, who had a team-high four birdies, was only one stroke behind Moore.
For the most part, Laub was pleased with his round.
“I didn’t hit a fairway with my driver, but everything else was really good,” Laub said. “The rain made things a little more tiring, but I was being patient and it didn’t really affect me too much.”
Bailey, meanwhile, had only one birdie, but his 75 was still good to be the third-best score of the day.
“I don’t think the conditions had much to do with it, but my approach play wasn’t too good today,” Bailey said. “I was miss-ing a lot of greens, but I was able to get up and down most of the time.”
After opening the season with a 12th-place among 16 teams at Senica’s Oak Ridge Golf in La Salle, EHS was denied a chance to claim a third straight title in the Alton Tee-Off Classic on Spencer T. Olin Golf Course was cancelled due to rain.
On Thursday, though, the Tigers looked sharp in extend-
ing their string of county titles.“That’s a testament to the
program and where it was before I got here,” Tyler said. “You look at some of the other schools that were here today, and they put up some good numbers. Granite City is a very good team and for us to beat them is great.”
Civic Memorial was third at 379 while Father McGivney (400) and Roxana (416) placed fourth and fifth, respectively.
MELHS sophomore Antonio Ybarra was the small-school medalist with a 5-over 77.
Ybarra initially wasn’t pleased with his score but earning med-alist honors was enough to put a smile on his face.
“It adds confidence and makes me a little happier going into the season,” Ybarra said. “My teammates played great and that helps me focus and play better.
“The back nine was a little rough in places, but I tried to minimize my mistakes. It wasn’t exactly what I was looking for score-wise, but I feel like I’m getting better.”
Kaden Topal was the No. 2 scorer for MELHS with a 90.
Drew Sowerwine shot 83 to lead the way for Father McGivney. Evan Yasitis added an 87 for the Griffins.
Aidan O’Keefe was the top scorer for Marquette with a 79. William Rodenfeld had an 84 for the Explorers while teammate Grant Heinz shot 87.
For Alton, a score of 336 and a third-place finish among large schools was a big step in the right direction for the Redbirds.
Tyler Hazelwood and Dylan Lahue each shot 82 for Alton. Clayton Pilger had an 85 and Aidan Keshner shot 87.
“I think we beat last year by about 60 strokes,” Redbirds coach Zach Deeder said. “Four of the guys are returning play-ers, so my guys are showing huge improvement. We have a freshman, Charlie Coy, who played a great opening round.
“We got cancelled on Tuesday on our home course, which was brutal, but today with these conditions, I was really happy with how we played. Anything under 90 is really good.”
