Pupils of Classes 3 to 6 received their prizes on 11 May and Classes 7 to 12 received theirs on 12 May. Special prizes and the House Trophy were awarded on the second day.

The Variety Programme on each day had Music from Films as its theme.

The first item was a musical piece, Movie Margarita, put together by Mr A. Halder and Mr G. Sen. The quintet of musicians in the orchestra pit, who played the piece, included Mr A. Halder (synthesizer), Mr G. Sen (lead guitar) and guest artistes – Mr Subhodeep Roy (bass guitar), Mr Shushruto Goswami (flute) and Mr Shuvam Ghosh (octopad).

The Founder-Rector, Mr I. Guha, then lit the ceremonial lamp.

11 & 12 May 2016 The mood for the evening having been set, it was time for a medley of songs, based on various ragas, sung by Mukherjee 4D, Monoswita Sengupta 4D, Anushkaa Banerjee 4E, Oishik Mandal 4E, Vibhan Dutta 5D, Oishik Mukhopadhyay 8C, Srimantee Mohanta 8B and Soham Mitra 9B.

The pupils sang Man Tarapata from Baiju Bawra, Naveli Kali Khilan Lagi from Basant Bahar, the soulful Poochona Kaise from Meri Surat Teri Ankhen and Bol Re Papihara from Guddi.

The impressive solo rendition of Aaoge Jab Tum Saajna from Jab We Met by Sarbajit Dutta 12A was the concluding piece.

Directed by Ms M. Bose, the young singers were accompanied by Mr Manoj Pandey on the tabla, Mr Debasish Adhikari on the harmonium and Mr A. Halder, Mr G. Sen, Mr S. Roy, Mr S. Goswami and

Adrija

Mr S. Ghosh on various other instruments.

Thereafter the Principal, Mrs Rajashri Biswas, addressed the audience, reiterating the School’s commitment to academic excellence.

Little Titli in the eponymous play, Titli, discovers the true joy of learning when she is admitted to a school where education is synonymous with happiness.

The Samridhi Roy Memorial Prize for the highest aggregate in Home Science (Classes 9 & 10 combined), instituted this year, was awarded to Archishman Saha 10E.

The House Trophy went to Chinar. The House Captain, Rishab Bairagi ISC 2016, and Vice-Captain, Aaditi Somen Bose 12B, received the trophy from the Founder-Rector.

The Junior Choir then sang a medley of six songs from The Sound of Music.

The Senior Choir’s musical medley began with two numbers that are and will remain Salil Chowdhury’s immortal legacy: the unforgettable Aha Oi Anka Banka Path blending into Aha Rimjhim Ke Ye Pyare Pyare Geet from the film Usne Kaha Tha. This was followed by Nee Varu Kavya Devathe from the Malayalam film Swapnam blending into Raaton Ke Saaye Ghane from the film Annadata. The last song of the medley was O Sajna from Parakh. The Choir concluded its performance with A. R. Rahman’s Oscar-winning, Jai Ho, from the film Slumdog Millionaire.

1. 11 & 12 May: Romance, choreographed by Ms A. Guha Thakurta, was based on the songs Jash Ne Bahara (Jodha Akbar), Deewani Mastani (Bajirao Mastani) and Sun Saathiya (ABCD 2).

Pupils of Class 11 assembled in the morning to observe Netaji’s 119th birthday. The programme included patriotic songs, poems, and speeches on Netaji’s life and achievements, as well as an enactment of the poem Swaraj by Charankobi Mukunda Das.

The opening song – Tabo Charano Nimne – was followed by a narrative highlighting the patriotic fervor and nationalistic spirit of the Indians who accepted Netaji as their leader. The speakers also emphasized the role of the INA and its achievements in India’s struggle for freedom. Songs like Eso Pranobarono Dainyo Horono, which can still move listeners, were sung.

The 119th birth anniversary of one of the foremost freedom fighters of India, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, was observed in the Primary School at a special assembly. Amaradri Palit played the role of Netaji. Arhan Das Gupta, Shreyansh Das, Aadita Biswas and Soumya Ghosh spoke about the life of the great man and the part he played in India’s struggle for freedom. This was followed by patriotic songs sung by the children of Classes 1 and 2. The programme ended with the National Anthem.

Rector’s Tea Party for Outgoing Class 12When: 28 January 2016Where: Hexagon

This annual event was held in the afternoon. In the presence of the Founder-Rector, the Principal was followed by several teachers in wishing the students all the best for the ISC examination and the future that lay ahead. Students shared memories of their schooldays with their classmates and teachers. Songs were sung with everyone joining in. Adrija Debnath 12B performed a solo dance. Then, there was a flurry of photography with pupils clicking themselves in groups and with their teachers.

High tea followed.

The Scouts and Guides of the 2nd Explorers’ Group went on their Annual camp this year, once again to Jaldapara. They stayed there for 5 days, taking part in various activities like games, jungle safaris and, of course, campfire. Though the pupils were divided into teams or patrols, they worked together throughout the camp, helping each other in the various activities. They enjoyed themselves thoroughly.

Adittya Pal 11B was selected for the National Training Camp for Earth Science Olympiad 2016 at Anna University, Chennai.

Koustav Chatterjee 7F was placed 1st in the 28th West Bengal State Age Group Chess Championship 2016 (Under-13 Boys), organized by the Bhawanipur Education Society College and Global Chess Founda-tion. He was also ranked 2nd (U-13)in three tournaments: (1) Chess for Youth 2016 at Khudiram Anushilan Kendra, (2) 2nd Triple ‘C’ All India FIDE Rating Chess Tournament 2016 at Puri, and (3) 2nd Adra FIDE Open International Rating Chess Tournament 2016 at Railway Officers’ Club.

Shreya Chakraborty 10B won the runner-up trophy at the AITA U-16 Championship series held from

7–11 May 2016 at the International Club. She was also selected from East and North East India to be trained under Wimbledon coach, Mr Dan Bloxham.

Annual Camp 2015

BITM VISITPupils of Class 11 (Science) visited BITM on 18 January 2016 to attend a lecture, organized by the British Council, on Nitrides: The Rainbow Material by a professor from the University of Strathclyde. It was part of a series of public lectures across Kolkata. The speaker, Prof. Carol Cowan, explained the invention of the long-awaited blue-light LED which won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2014. She also spoke of methods to make the LED more efficient and effective. This was followed by an interactive session.

The students were accompanied by Mr K. Ray and Ms T. Roychow-dhury. It was an enlightening experience, and a truly unique opportunity for the pupils to learn some interesting and important facts from one of the leading researchers in the field of material chemistry.

The theme of this year’s brief programme was Jagat Parabarer Teere Shishur Mahamela, focusing on the nature of a child, a child’s relation with its mother and Nature, its unfettered imagination, and Tagore’s views on child psychology. The programme comprised narration, a skit, songs and dances.

On 29 January the children of the Primary Section had their annual event – COOK IN – when all the pupils from Nursery 1 to Class 2 prepared their midday snacks themselves. Nursery 1 made Chatpata Churmur, while Nursery 2 made an innovative item – a Scrumptious Salad with boiled potatoes, sliced

cucumber and peas mixed with potato chips. They added chaat masala and lime juice to it. The Preparatory made Rocking Roll. The children were thrilled when they were asked to place the omelette or panir on the paratha and roll it up. The teachers helped them to pour tomato sauce on the rolls.The little chefs of Class 1 made a Smiley Sandwich Platter. They prepared it with bread, aloo tikka and cucumber slices. They made smiley faces with tomato sauce on the sandwiches.Class 2 made Murukku Magic – placing cheese slices and onion rings on murukkus. Incredible IndiaOn 15 March 2016 the juniors of Garden High (Nursery to Class 2) put up an extravaganza of colour and talent, showcasing India at her best. Ms Ratna Bose’s concept was ably executed by the enthusiastic teachers of the Junior Department. Art teachers got busy and on the final day an entire fence between the building and the lawn was covered with beautiful artwork by the children. Exhibits featuringcreative writing andamazing acrylic art, all by the children, were on display.

The Little Musicians entertained the visitors with folk music – baul songs and dances. Sounds of sweet voices filled the air as Aisshe Sinha 2B, Agnishwar Bhatta-charjee 1A, Sanchari Malkhandi Nur 2E, Tannistha Pathak 2A and PragyanGhosh 1E sang, played the harmonium,dhol, tabla, ektara and khanjani, and danced to the beats they produced.

Moving on, there was Bartan Bahar, a magnificent display of metal utensils used in Indian kitchens all over the country. Further on was the delightful Banarasi Paan Bhandaar where Avigyyan Routh 2D and Arya Sengupta 2D, both colourfully clad, sold paan and called out to their customers to come and taste their fare. There was a food counter run by the Preparatory called Dil Maange More.

Boards filled with pictures of peacocks, lotus, elephants and other Indian emblems; tables displaying tribal masks, headbands and tigers on thermocol plates; mobile displays of four festivals celebrated in India: Christmas, Holi, Onam and Diwali; and a tree with hand-impressions of the little people of Garden High – all meant to highlight Unity in Diversity – impressed all visitors.

There were jute bags decorated with bangles, shells, wool and mirrors, and T-shirts painted with hand or produc-ed by block printing.A traditional Aarti Thali and some Rangoli were on display, as were models made by the pupils of Class 2 – Picturesque Thar, Kaziranga National Park, The Magnificent Ganga and A Lazy

Afternoon at Nandapur. Visitors saw pupils making rakhis, painting pots, and creating items of heritage art like Warli, Patachitra, Madhubani and Alpana.

In another place, children were dressed in regional costumes of West Bengal,Kerala, Goa, Rajasthan and Kashmir. Visitors met famous personalities like Vivekananda (Soumya Ghosh 1B), Gandhiji (Rajarshi Deb Roy 1D), Dr Abdul Kalam (Rupannita Dey 1E), Mother Teresa (Barnita Paul 1A), Rani Laxmi Bai (Mehul Anand 1A),

Dr Radhakrishnan (Sampoorna Biswas 1D), Netaji (Amaradri Palit 1B) and Pt. Nehru (Snehal Chakra-borty 1E).

The Artisans at Work was a pleasure to watch. Little fingers were working busily – mat weaving, Warli painting, pot painting, jewellery and kantha making, tie-and-dye and

block printing.And finally the dances! Every half an hour a group of pupils would break into a dance. Tribute was paid to Rabindranath Tagore through their

dance to Phagun Legeche Bone Bone. This was followed by Bhangra, Dandiya and a Goan dance. Rishav Ved Basu 2B and Anusha Chowdhury 2E were competent comperes.
