The Dean’s Editorial

We are rapidly finishing the month of August

where traditionally in France everything comes to

a standstill! However in GGSB we are still as

busy as ever getting one lot of students out and

preparing for the next batch in September. We

have already seen a number of students who will

be joining a GGSB program after the holidays

who are already looking for their accommodation

in June and July.

As you can see from the GGSB newsletter, which

is getting longer with each new edition, it has

been a busy and eventful time as usual. Our performance in the FT MSc

Finance rankings is fantastic and now we just have to keep our fingers

crossed for the next MIB ranking which will come out in September. We

have had another successful ISO audit which keeps us on our toes and is

good preparation for the next round of accreditations which are fast

approaching.

To finish off the year on a positive note we have just had a great article –

and photograph - in the FT about the live business cases on Marie-

France DERDERIAN’s MSc in Business Development and MSc Strategy

Entrepreneurship programs and the partnership with Michelin.

I hope you all had/are having a relaxing summer vacation and look

forward to seeing you.

From Monique Garnier Cormons, GGSB International Student Services Manager

It is still summer time, a never ending impetuous and flourishing season… However, we are busy preparing the very promising new academic year while staying connected with our very talented Alumni…. Thanks to you, we progress hand in hand. Our last performance in the FT MSc Finance is amazing thanks to the contribution and engagement of MSc Finance 1 and 2! The numbers of our networking events “GEM/GGSB around the word” have increased a lot and raise always a high level of enthusiasm! Alumni are excited to participate in these events and keep requesting more…It is always my great pleasure to meet with you and develop new ideas! Look at the increasing numbers of groups on social networks! I am sure that you will find your friends and GGSB family! The future milestone is in Paris on Saturday, November 19th 2011: we

are meeting under the Parisian starry sky…. I also enjoy a lot working on this newsletter. This is a great opportunity and way to share your success stories and emphasize how many of you are very successful entrepreneurs around the world! I also invite you to join this network: http://www.businessbecause.com The school has joined this club of business schools – a club with a limited number of schools – only about 30. They publish our news stories and offer a network to BS staff, applicants, students and graduates alike. Business Because also organise alumni events worldwide. For the latest one in London, some of our alumni attended: http://www.businessbecause.com/fifth-businessbecause-mba-applicants-drinks-party/8964.htm As staff, we are not allowed to go to these alumni/applicants events, but we would like to ensure GGSB alumni have the opportunity to attend. Finally, I join Judith in hoping you had/are having a relaxing vacation. Looking forward to celebrating and admiring your talents and success soon... and stay tuned for further information regarding GEM participation in the GIANT campus, the world class innovation campus... From David Songulashvili, MIB 21… “I got an inspiration to start this business from one of the assignments of module - International Business….”

Dear GGSB students and Alumni members, I am delighted to have an opportunity to share my experience about GGSB with you. I would like to speak a little bit about my success story after graduation and how the university helped me in this success. First of all I would like to highlight that GGSB is not just a university or school, not just some time spent with books, even if I did this a lot. I believe that GGSB is the community where you acquire the skills of leadership, entrepreneurship and intercultural relations. It prepares you to live in the real business oriented world. By inspiring you not to ever give up, it shows you that there are always alternative ways of

reaching your goals. Of course the main point is to have an ambition for attaining your dreams and to work for that. I’m addressing all of you from very small part of the world - the country of Georgia. It had difficult times during recent years, but by progressive reforms of leading government and business organizations it is really becoming a part of dynamically developing world. Living here with my young family - wife and two children, I am the founder and managing partner of the company Adress, which operates on Georgian cloth retail market since 2007 and employs 95 staff members as of today. Representing 7 international brands exclusively with 11 stores, the company has become a market leader in its field. Despite of the world economic and local crisis address kept development and is still keeping progress. I started my business right after graduation of the first year of GGSB MIB. I am sure that you are familiar with most of the brands of our portfolio, even more, you are costumers of them. These are Celio, Tom Tailor, Etam, Promod, Gerry Weber, 1.2.3 and DPAM. I opened my first store in December 2007 and since then we are keeping growth and development. I got an inspiration to start this business from one of the assignments of module - International Business. We had to write a business plan of one of the international cloth brand, which wanted to enter overseas markets. Since

Page 5: GGSB Alumni Newsletter August 2011

then I started thinking about this business and which brands would be suitable for Georgian market. I chose Celio and started writing them email thread on their website during two months daily, until they responded and entered in discussion. By the way, International Negotiation classes of MIB helped me very much in those negotiations and I succeeded. Entering business and getting first contact and contract proved to be most difficult part, after that it is much easier to develop existing, though you should always stay alert. Last but not the least, there is no shortcut to being successful, but the main point is to identify yourself and to have your vision. GGSB helps you in that and gives you the inspiration to be employer, not the employee. The key to success is to believe and work hard for achievement of your goals. In case you want to learn more about our company please see our web site: www.adress.ge Wish you success in your business and private life! Kind regards, David

From Luis Angeles, MIB 17…Mexican Wrestlers conquers Paris First Taqueria in France

“Arrêtez de manger la baguette, mangez tacos !” (Stop eating baguettes, eat tacos!) Mario shouted on the street while helping us distribute flyers. So we went out and quietly asked Mario to change his discourse to something a little less aggressive “Welcome to our Mexican restaurant, come on in and try our tacos”. When I first came to France in 2004 I knew that eventually I would start my own business. But I also knew that I needed to learn to make business here and to get to know the European culture better. Having an electronic engineering background and having worked in the manufacturing industry most of my professional life, I never imagined that I would sell tacos to the French. But well, in Mexico we say “El amor entra por el estomago” (Love enters through the stomach). So here we are, with a project that provides work to nine people and promotes

authentic Mexican culture in a contemporary way. We run our business promoting responsible and efficient nutrition. BocaMexa was the first Mexican fast casual restaurant adapted to an international taste. One year on and we are now successfully selling not only tacos, but quesadillas, salads and our number one in sales, the Burrito. We have signed a contract to start importing and distributing Mexican products and our website is a cultural platform for anyone wanting to know more about Mexico. It is clear to me that it was not the product that made the difference but our system and the convictions we have in our strategy. There are now at least six other similar concepts to ours in Paris and four more are about to arrive, including the well know American chain Chipotle. We welcome them, “El sol sale para todos” (The sun shines for everybody). So you never know, if “Let them eat cake” started a revolution that changed France forever, “Let them eat tacos” could be the start of our own revolution. Not that we want to stop the French from eating their baguettes, of course not (personally I love baguettes), but by offering them an alternative healthy meal that didn’t exist before. And all this because we understand that eating is one of the most basic human needs and it should be an enjoyable experience. So like we say in Mexico, “Panza llena, Corazón contento” (A happy tummy is a happy heart). We’ll see how it goes from here. From Giacomo Gigliarelli & Edmundo Ramirez, MIB 21…Tears, sweat, blood ...and some laughs too!

EGCasa has been founded by two MIB’s 21 alumni, Edmundo Ramirez and Giacomo Gigliarelli. EGCasa is a luxury trading firm with presence in Europe, North America, South-East Asia and Russia, which manage and represent brands as Biò® Fireplace, Plust, Pirwi, Leroy&Scarpa, Magniflex, Waterwall, among others. Our Mission is to help brands growing all around the world. The idea started a summer evening in Madrid where we met by chance after few years while remembering the old great days in Grenoble.

Giacomo was being promoted within Diageo Iberia (The spirits giant) and Edmundo was returning to Spain from Singapore to head the activities in Europe of a Consulting Firm in the Oil and Gas industry. While discussing the beauties of working with multinationals, we decided to quit our jobs and go on our own, put our savings upfront, and rock and roll. Having Bio Fireplace as the RAM to the luxury market we decided to expand in terms of lines and countries. Giacomo moved back to Perugia for a few months controlling the European sales Development, the production and looking for complementary lines that could complete the offer to clients while Edmundo moved to Canada controlling the North American & Asian business development. Dear all … here is the tears, sweat and blood part. With a small office in Spoleto, Italy, and a one-bedroom apartment in Montreal, we have been working for almost 6 months 18 hours a day 7 days a week absorbing all the difficulties of every start up. Instead of traveling by plane, bus became a great option (there is free internet and is cheap), using a lot of imagination and our global network we started developing what today is our treasure and child. With lots of sweat, some tears and true blood, but also with hilarious moments like falling in the snow right before visiting a client or entering the Exhibition in Toronto.

EGCasa has grown fast worldwide thanks to the attention to quality and to the obsession on clients’ feedback and satisfaction (Thanks to KARMA CRM). Now EGCasa has permanent office in Perugia, Toronto, Montreal and Mexico City, commercial and logistics presence in USA, Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Russia, Singapore, Cyprus, Middle East and opening new markets for 2012. EGCasa it’s also expanding on the cosmetic segment trough a strategic alliance with Olivella Cosmetics (Italian Cosmetics line made 100% from Extra Virgin Olive Oil) with which we signed an exclusive distribution agreement for Mexico & LATAM markets. Thanks to Grenoble Graduate School of Business and the experience gathered during the MIB program, we have been able to move in the international market getting together multicultural teams. The most important thing we discovered is that the world is big, but it is not that big for all of us together. If you are interested in EGCasa business model or you want to share some ideas or even you want to experience an internship with us, feel free to contact us [email protected] … we can make you laugh, sweat and who know you may decide to join the BLOOD DONATION team ;) ;) Hope to see everybody soon!!!

From Charlotte Felix Faure, MIB 21… Charlotte Felix Faure was born in Johannesburg, South Africa and has been living in France since 2003. She studied sciences and business in South Africa and then went on to study for a Master in International Business at Grenoble Ecole de Management. After a stint in the corporate environment, she decided to embark on a project that has been very close to her heart, opening a faire-trade art and design boutique working with Southern African artisans and artists. iTU Espace Design presents a unique collection of creations resulting from the rich artistic traditions and cultures of Southern Africa (South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland, Mozambique …). The creations have been designed and handcrafted by artisans and artists working within non-profit organisations and by artists employing people from disadvantaged communities. These organisations aim at improving the lives of the people from the disadvantaged communities by

Page 7: GGSB Alumni Newsletter August 2011

providing training and helping them to make a living from their art. “What inspires me most is the creativity that is blooming in Southern Africa these last couple of years, notably in South Africa. And I’m not talking about your typical roadside souvenirs or cheesy wildlife art, I mean Design! Originality! Trendiness! Every time I go down there I get swept away by new amazing creations and their originality! I think to myself this really deserves to be shown to the world. I also love the fact that there is so much recycled material used in many of the products and that there’s already a “green” culture that is growing within the society. Fair trade is very important and something that is very necessary. It has to be the normal way of conducting business. I believe that people should be paid according to what they judge their effort, skill and time are worth. By trading fairly with the producers we allow them to live a decent life and to be able to provide for their families. Then they’ll have no need to go far away in search of employment, leaving their loved ones behind and risking their own lives in the process.” - Charlotte. iTU Espace Design aims at encouraging cultural exchange and discovery of the Southern African art and cultures in Grenoble and France in a responsible, respectable, and fair manner.

From Dr. Taran Patel-Associate Professor GEM, MIB Program Director (Onsite program)

Dear GGSB Alumni, It gives me immense pleasure to share with you some of the key developments in the Masters of International Business (MIB) Program. As you know, the MIB program has been one of the top ranked programs of Grenoble Graduate School of Business. For the past several years, its high quality and academic credibility has been recognized through its international ranking, which has consistently ranged from 4th to 7th worldwide (see Financial Times Ranking of International Business Programs 2007-2010). At the beginning of the ongoing academic year, the MIB program was ranked 5th worldwide. While on one hand this gives us reason to celebrate, on the other this also places an immense responsibility on our shoulders: the responsibility of consistently delivering, year after year, a high quality program to our stakeholders! Our stakeholders include not only our current study body, but also our alumni, the domestic and international companies our graduates work for, and the larger society. It is with the objective of meeting this responsibility, that at the beginning of this year, we undertook the

challenging and substantial task of reviewing the existing and already successful MIB program. The review process which began in November 2010 brought together our dedicated faculty members from all the five academic departments at GEM, the MIB program management team, the Dean and Director of GGSB, the Director of Studies of GGSB, the Associate Dean of Pedagogical Coherence at GEM and the Departmental Heads and/or their representatives. In the first instance the permanent and visiting professors who have contributed to the MIB program for the past several years were invited to make their suggestions regarding what they would like to see changed on the MIB program. We also analyzed the input and feedback we had been receiving from our MIB students in the past five years regarding the program and its content. Simultaneously we engaged in a rigorous comparison between the program that we currently offer and other similar programs offered by other top-ranked schools. The objective of this

Page 8: GGSB Alumni Newsletter August 2011

exercise was to learn what we needed to learn from other business school with comparable standing as ours, without compromising on our own identity and image. Another very important stakeholder group that we included in this reflective exercise was the local and international companies that have been employing our graduates for the past several years. As part of the first Professional Advisory Board organized by GGSB this year, local and international companies were invited to provide us feedback on all the GGSB programs. The Professional Advisory Board also included some of our alumni, who contributed in a big way towards the reflections pertaining to the revision of the MIB program. This feedback was then used to enrich our reflections during the MIB review process. Once we had received all the input from the different academic departments and once the input from the other stakeholders was also presented to the MIB program review committee, the creative process of restructuring the program commenced. The MIB program review committee met five times through the year, every time engaging in in-depth reflections and discussions, which culminated in the generation of many creative suggestions regarding the content of the program. This iterative and reflective exercise concluded with the final presentation and subsequent approval of the revised MIB program to the GGSB Board of Studies in June 2011. The current MIB students were also invited to comment on the revised program and have given it their resounding approval! The revised MIB program is a much leaner and richer program than the existing one and more in line with the current demands of the job market. The review process has resulted in shortening some of the existing modules (for example, International Business Law), regrouping other existing modules ( for example, Research Methodology for FMP and Business Statistics have been regrouped into a more coherent module entitled Research Methodology for International Managers), creation of many new modules (for example Marketing and Innovations and Strategic Marketing and Planning) and the integration of existing modules into other modules (for example, Economics is now part of the larger International Business module). In the revised MIB program the Final Management Project (graduating thesis) has been given much more significance as compared to the existing program. This change is in line with the general practices in many top business schools around the globe. Most importantly, all these changes are consistent with the guidelines provided by our accrediting bodies (AMBA, EQUIS and AACSB). The revised MIB program is set to be launched in September 2012. The MIB program team and the entire GGSB family as well as our advisors and well-wishers are holding their breaths to see the impact of the interesting and collaborative work we have done this year! We are confident that the revised MIB program will be even more successful than the current program. Inputs from our alumni with regards to the revised MIB program are very welcome! Dr. Taran Patel has lived and worked in several countries including France, Spain, India, Finland and the UK. In addition to being

an Associate Professor in the Management and Organizational Behaviour Department of Grenoble Ecole de Management, she is

also the Director of the Masters of International Business (MIB) Program of GGSB. Additionally, she is a Visiting Scholar at the

University of Oxford and Affiliate Researcher at the Judge Institute, Cambridge where she does research in the area of cross-

cultural management, corporate sustainability reporting practices and the culture of innovations. She has published academic

articles in many internationally recognized peer-reviewed journals: Innovations: A European Journal of Social Sciences,

Management Decisions, Journal of Business Ethics etc. Her book entitled ‘Stereotypes of Intercultural Management’ was published

in 2007 and was the culmination of her doctoral thesis, which won the EFMD (European Foundation for Management Development)

Award for best doctoral thesis in the Corporate Governance category in 2006. She has been a consultant to companies such as

Salmson in France and Technip-Coflexip in India. She has been involved in diversity training programs with companies such as

Atos Origin and AXA. Her initiatives in creating awareness regarding Diversity Management were recognized when she was invited

as a speaker at the World Diversity Leadership Summit at the United Nations Headquarters in New York in 2007

The M3C Model of Cooperative Contextual Change

Dr. Mark Esposito and Dr. Lloyd C. Williams from Grenoble Graduate School of Business in France, jointly with Dr. Alessandro Biscaccianti, have come together to write a modern new textbook on the theory of contextual change, presenting original ideas tested and ready to implement in their highly informative book, The M3C Model of Cooperative Contextual Change. The book has been released worldwide on May 17

th and it sold out, in few days in the UK. The

work is now being used at Harvard, where Dr. Mark Esposito teaches, to enhance parts of the systems dynamics course, where students from around the world are participating. On July 20

th then, Dr. Mark Esposito and Dr. Lloyd Williams have animated and co-lectured on

the content of the book at Harvard University, in a crowded Emerson 108 Hall.

The authors posit that to increase effectiveness of change, it's necessary to introduce dynamic stability into a system. The whole organization and each individual should have a sense of security, and M3C can become the vehicle for this change. One especially new element is the contextual “drivership” method, which integrates leadership and management into organizational practices and processes that assure opportunity and capacity for success among employees.

Page 9: GGSB Alumni Newsletter August 2011

This textbook is also a premiere in the literature on change management, since the concept of “contextual cooperative change” has been formulated, for the first time, by the authors. With a strong focus on the theory of the systems and complex adaptability, this work wants to represent an integrated and interdisciplinary approach to the theory of change, which has been, for so long, strategized, but never transformed into dynamic. So if you're ready to increase action coordination, proactively anticipate possible issues, enhance information sharing, and become willing to look for solutions instead of focusing on problems, pick up The M3C Model of Cooperative Contextual Change for some brand-new insight. Special economic zones in Asian market

Published by Routledge in 2011, co-edited by Connie Carter, a business lawyer who teaches Corporate Governance and Business Ethics in the MSc Finance programme at GGSB.

Special Economic Zones (SEZs) are said to have kick-started China’s rapid economic growth. The first one was in Shenzhen, originally just a small village opposite Hong Kong, today it is a city of 20 million people. Dr Carter’s book has grown from the proceedings of a conference held in Kyushu University, Japan, involving scholars from Asia, Canada, China, India and other parts of the world. It explores the nature of SEZs across Asia: from China through the Philippines, Korea, Malaysia to India, in an attempt to understand the reasons for the concept’s continuing vigour and what challenges they may face. The reader will find a fascinating set of studies which raise a wide range of issues about SEZs in the context of the socio-economic, environmental, political and governance aspects of Asian development. Since SEZs have proliferated rapidly during the past decade, and seem set to multiply in the next, not only in Asia and Europe but also in Africa and the Americas, the book is relevant to anyone contemplating the question of whether there are lessons to be

learned from the Asian experience.

One Thing at a Time

From Pat Brans

Most of the executives I talk to about time management tell me you need to do one thing at a time. Many of them forbid the use of laptops or phones during meetings. For example, Jim Whitehurst, CEO of Red Hat, says that anybody who tries to do email during a meeting probably isn't doing a good job at either of those tasks. Ahold USA CIO John Dettenwanger concurs, adding that time management is mostly about eliminating distractions. On that note, let me close with a few ideas about what you can do to achieve better focus:

Whenever you set work aside, make a clean break. Bring each small chunk to a good stopping point where you can continue working the next time you go back to that project. Then stop thinking about that task and move on to something else.

When you say no to somebody, do so as politely as possible to minimize any agony you might feel later about having hurt the other person's feelings, and then detach yourself emotionally. It's no longer your problem.

Plan at least an hour a day to work on only one thing. A woman attending one of my workshops told me about a site director with an engineering company who made it a policy for people to work alone between 10 and 11 o'clock in the morning. During this time, nobody was allowed to look at email, use the phone, or talk to anybody else. This rule turned out to be very popular, because people found that they could get a lot done in a relaxed manner during that hour.

Set aside time each week to think about your big goals, and make it a habit to think about those big goals only during that time. Cut the big things into small, meaningful chunks of work with clean stopping points. Take a little time thinking through what can go wrong; if appropriate, add chunks of work that will help you to prevent those problems from occurring.

Once you've spent your allotted time thinking about your big goals and what might go wrong, you're free to focus on each of the little tasks in sequence. Spend most of your time just thinking about what's in front of you right now.

Master the moment.

Patrick Brans' latest book is Master the Moment: Fifty CEOs Teach You the Secrets of Time Management (British

Computer Society, ISBN 9781906124731). You can learn more about the book and Pat's time-management seminars

From Jessica Anthonios, Junior lecturer The first time I ever stepped foot on GGSB ground was in the fall of September 2007. Fresh off of the plane landing from Lebanon, heading towards Grenoble hoping that my year abroad would be the best year of my life. With worries, thoughts and lots of anticipation I took my first steps into GGSB as an MSc in Marketing student intake one, not knowing what awaits. The journey here forth was everything I had hoped for and much more. So let me break it down for you.

Page 11: GGSB Alumni Newsletter August 2011

Coming to a country with no knowledge of the local language, not knowing a soul, and going into a field foreign to your own…the pressure was on! My year at GGSB passed at the speed of light, with an all-inclusive package of hard work, pressure, aspiration for excellence, cultural diversity, fun, laughter, and many memories I will treasure forever. When I finished my taught year at GGSB, I managed to get an internship in a multinational company located in Grenoble called XEROX for those of you who know it. The experience was a wonderful one as I learned an array of many new things and worked with people from different academic and cultural backgrounds. It was truly an enriching experience of exactly 10 months. After the end of my internship I was called back to XEROX to consult for three months on the project I had worked on previously. During that time I was writing my thesis, and fortunately managed to submit it on time. Not only did I graduate, but I did so with distinction. What a proud and happy day that

commemorated the hard work of the year before. From there I went on to get a postgraduate Professional Diploma in Marketing at GGSB as well and an internship in a startup digital marketing company called SWEETBEAM. This internship was nothing like my first, as it included a creative and very interactive side of marketing that I did not experience at XEROX. Four years down the line, the year is 2011, I find myself still in Grenoble, still at GGSB, but this time loving it even more, and finally speaking French. Not only that, but this time I am all in one! I am currently employed at GGSB as both a permanent part of the admissions team, I am a junior lecturer teaching ‘Consumer Behavior’ to undergraduate students in both GGSB and ESC English track, as well as being a Doctoral student in the DBA program at our mother school GEM. To boil it down, my experience for the past four years here at GGSB and Grenoble itself, has been surely unexpected and unplanned for, yet the best experience of my life and more to hopefully come!

Learning Expedition in Management Consulting for MSc in Management Consulting and MBA students from GGSB 30 & 31st May 2011

From Preethi Moorthy, MBA candidate, full time program 2010-11 The sunny Northern Italian city of Milan, where the finest fashion houses in the world jostle for room and recognition alongside industrial, technological and financial powerhouses, was the perfect setting to kick-start a two-day learning expedition -- an expedition that would turn 15 GGSB students from every major continent into international job candidates, better prepared to deal with the triumphs and perils of management consulting.

An impromptu addition to the Msc. Management Consulting program, envisioned by the dynamic duo of program director Dr. Michelle Mielly and Professor Michele Coletti, under the aegis of APCO (Italian Professional Association of Management Consultants), the trip was an intensive session on pan-European consulting practises, cultural implications and best practises for its participants from the MSc Management Consulting and MBA programs. IBM: The Pinnacle of success The first stop was at the technology and consulting behemoth, IBM. At IBM, the graduates got a feel of the process and practises employed when offering strategy consulting and change management expertise to its diverse clientele. IBM’s ability to cope

with a changing and complex environment, aided by sophisticated business analytics tools, along with their client centric approach to consulting was of considerable interest. We also got a sneak peak at the state of the art technological solutions, from supercomputing question answering (QA) system “Watson” (champion of the ‘Jeopardy’ game show) to the trendy “Fashion Solution Store” application, IBM had something for everyone. The sprawling campus at the heart of the city and the sheer wealth of professional experience that IBM encased within its walls struck an instant cord with us as we got to interact with IBM employees and catch a glimpse of what life would be at a multi - national consulting enterprise. A fork in the road From the dynamic technological hub to the grit, grind and glory of independent consulting, the second half of the trip was a lesson in rich contrasts. Group 1 students got to visit Franco Guazzoni’s firm Core Consulting, a consultancy with practices in Marketing & Sales, training, and performance management with a strong focus on HR and Organizational development . The same group also got a chance to visit with Rita Bonucchi, the founder and director of Bonucchi & Associati, a niche, international Marketing consultancy that provided an honest appraisal of the consulting profession in Italy along with helpful guidelines on writing business plans. Group 2 students were involved in a highly informative session on Project and Portfolio Management with Omar Zein of Projectize, a Project Management Consultancy with an emphasis on best practises, tools and certifications. This group also had an interactive session with Francesca Oliva of SLO SRL consultancy, a boutique firm specializing in HR coaching and organizational development, as well as CSR, that offered insights on how to win businesses and leverage social media to improve web presence. It was inspiring to note how innovative and process-driven even a boutique consultancy can be and discover the intricacies of client retention thorough relationships, referrals and networking. The icing on the cake The culmination of our trip was the meet with APCO members and potential mentors. It was extremely gratifying in terms of networking opportunities and gave us a chance to expand our tendrils across Europe. In the words of Joy Matwale, Msc. Management Consulting Student from Kenya, “The trip to Milan was a wonderful way to end the program. Visiting different sized companies and to have consultants from different backgrounds make presentations was especially helpful for me in clarifying the areas I would like to specialize in. The practical element of having

Page 13: GGSB Alumni Newsletter August 2011

Certified Management Consultants providing their guidance and mentorship in developing a career in Management Consulting is of great added value.” We’re very thankful to our Italian Management Consultant hosts and mentors for their time and efforts to make this happen and look forward to future collaborations with APCO, which is one of the 47 member institutes of the International Council of Management Consulting Institutes (ICMCI).

GGSB links to the Management Consulting Industry From Michelle Mielly, Program Director MSc Management Consulting

With the creation of a new Master’s of Science in Management Consulting at GGSB starting in the Fall of 2010, GGSB is poised to create strong links to an industry in which many of our alumni have established successful career paths. With a first intake of 15 students from 13 different countries, the students worked on a variety of consulting projects for companies in sectors ranging from biotech devices to cloud computing consulting to aluminium manufacturing. They completed projects in Change Management, Business process management and

organizational design, innovation in R& D practices, and IT implementation, among others. To round off the academic year, the group, along with some current MBA students, went on a learning expedition to Milan, Italy in late May to discover the Management Consulting Industry there. Envisioned by the program directo r Michelle Mielly and Professor Michele Coletti, under the aegis of our Professional partners in Italy, APCO ( National Professional Association of Management Consultants), the trip was an intensive session on pan-European consulting practises, cultural implications and best practises for its participants.

GGSB’s official link to APCO is just one way for us to create vital links to the consulting profession and to better prepare our students for the specific needs and trends of this industry in their own countries. Since the management consulting profession is growing dynamically across the world, particularly in some emerging economies, it is an opportune moment for us to help our students and alumni from all over the world connect to certified Management Consulting professionals (CMCs) working at the highest standards in their respective countries. This is possible since APCO is one of the 47 member institutes of the International Council of Management Consulting Institutes (ICMCI), a professional organization which, according to its mission statement, is working “…to elevate the standards of management consultants worldwide, and to provide the international community with the confidence that these standards, combined with the certification process of its member institutes, will ensure that certified management consultants serve their clients with world-class competency and professionalism.”

We prepare professionals for work as Internal consultants across industries, as well as specialists in technology management, change and business transformations, ERP implementation, and the like, aligning the projects and teaching philosophy with the ethics and code of conduct upheld by the ICMCI. Thanks to their excellent work on the consulting projects realized and the strong recommendations they’re received, a number of students from the first intake have already found jobs or internships at organizations such as Michael Page, Accenture, Caisse d’Epargne, Saint-Gobain, XRite, Mars….and more in the pipeline. If you are an alumni already working in this vibrant profession, or looking to do so, make sure you visit the Grenoble Ecole de Management’s Management Consulting Club Community pages on the Graduate Network, and that you join the community to stay in touch and network with other consultants, current and future. We shall be organizing bi-annual events of specific interest to consultants in November and February and aim to put GGSB on the map of international management consulting. More info...

MSc Business Development From Marie France Derderian, Program Director MSc Business Development, MSc Innovation, Strategy &Entrepreneurship

GGSB MSc Business Development Program enhances focus on China As part of the MSc Business Development program at Grenoble Graduate School of Business, students have the opportunity to visit one emerging economy each year. The goal is to create an integrated learning experience for all participants. The International Study Residency combines academic lectures, corporate visits, and cultural activities. The students gain extensive knowledge of global business practices to prepare them as business developers that consistently perform across cultures and compete on a global market

China Residency Overview This year’s China residency program hosted 34 students from 22 countries along with their Program Director, Marie France Derderian, the University’s Director of Development & Executive Education Gaël Fouillard and the Dean of GGSB, Judith Bouvard. The residency began with a visit to Shanghai; the most modern and vibrant cities. MSc students studied different areas that made Shanghai the leader and driver of China’s economic growth. The trip continued with a visit to Beijing. Despite its role as China’s capital and home to a large number of international business and diplomatic residents, Beijing remains a traditional city due to its long-lasting importance as the cultural and political center of China.

Student’s Feedback Taking part in this exceptional experience helped us in acquiring the right balance of informative business visits and opportunities for cultural exploration. All of the logistics were well organized and our hosts and tour guides provided important assistance. The companies we visited as Michelin China, Airbus Tianjin, Sansi Tech (Chinese company),Aon Hewitt,(consulting firm),Oxylane Decathlon, Asobio , EDF Trading and the executives who spoke with us were particularly impressive. The level of attention they gave to our questions was exceptional. This was a rewarding experience for all of us.

This ranking reflects the satisfaction of the participants and our ability to meet the demands of the job market. Indeed, the recruiters are looking for finance professionals that master the concepts and techniques of finance, are able to work effectively in multicultural teams, and can relate finance to the economic and business worlds. Singapore and Jakarta From Judith Bouvard, GGSB Dean & Director

After a long trip to Indonesia via Amsterdam and Kuala Lumpur I spent a couple of days getting to know a new partner, BINUS University in Jakarta. We have signed an agreement with this small private university which we have sponsored to become a member of EFMD, to offer the possibility to students to spend a year in GGSB on the BIB program and get a double degree. From Jakarta I made the short trip over to Singapore to meet with our partner MDIS to discuss our current program, the MIB, which has now been running for 5 years and to discuss the possibility of extending our offer of programs in Singapore and in particular in the areas of Finance and Marketing.

MDIS have just extended their campus facilities to include a residence with accommodation for both students and faculty. GGSB faculty, program director and coordinators will be able to stay in this brand new facility which is right next door to the teaching rooms. No excuse for being late to class! Whilst I was in Singapore I met with Singapore Management University to discuss a possible cooperation with them on their MSc in Innovation program. They are particularly interested in a study trip to Grenoble which would be organized by Executive Education.

Conferences

AMBA - Deans & Directors Conference, Geneva From Nancy Amstrong, GGSB Director of Studies

This year, AMBA’s International Conference for Deans and Directors was held in the Grand Hotel Kempinski in Geneva. The conference provides an important opportunity for stakeholders in the business education field to examine the MBA and its future development within the international community. It is a key forum for learning and networking. The conference was attended by

Judith Bouvard, Thierry Grange, Phil Eyre and Nancy Armstrong. Phil Eyre chaired a very interesting session on the Future of the MBA. With the contribution of prestigious speakers from the Open University Business School and IESE Business School University of Navarra, Phil addressed the future of the full time MBA in light of distance and blended learning and, more generally, the balance that needs to be struck between technology-based learning and more traditional face-to-face classroom settings. Nancy contributed to a session entitled “Challenges in Faculty Recruitment and Development” and gave a talk about the issue of training practitioners to teach in accredited business schools like GGSB and presented GGSB’s faculty development program which has been deployed in Grenoble and Singapore this year and which she will deliver in the form of a 3 day seminar in Saudi Arabia, the Lebanon and Egypt in the Fall.

Educational Innovation in Economics and Business International Conference From Nancy Amstrong, GGSB Director of Studies

Early in June, Nancy Armstrong and Michelle Mielly attended the 18th edition of the EDiNEB International Conference in IDRAC, Lyon. The theme of the conference his year was “From Innovation to Crème de la Crème Education”. During the conference it became clear that participating institutions shared the way they look at education. From 40+ contributions (papers, workshops, keynotes) the mega-theme identified was that

of “The Whole Person” (a term introduced by prof. Peter Jarvis in his keynote address). Crème de la Crème Education focuses on the learner, and not just on the learner's cognitive capacities, but his/her entire being. Nancy and Michelle showed how 'Horseplay' (a pedagogical activity designed by Nancy and piloted by the MSc Management Consulting – see previous newsletter) can literally lead to enhanced leadership skills and ‘mindfulness’ in their paper and presentation entitled "Concepts of Ethological (Natural) Leadership in Elite Management Education and won the 2011 EDiNEB Best Paper Award.

Conference “Leadership – Managing for Values” From George Room

Professor Jim Hoopes, of Babson College, USA gave a conference on 5 April that lasted from 6:00 p.m. to about 7:30 p.m.; a total of 15 people attended, of whom most were faculty and the others GGSB MBA/MIB/BIB students. The subject of Professor Hoopes address was “Leadership – Managing for Values”. This subject was based very widely on his book about George W. Bush’s presidency (“Hail to the CEO: The Failure of George W. Bush and the Cult of Moral Leadership”).

Professor Hoopes sought to define “values” being used as goals – are they a means to an end or an end in themselves? Where should values figure in political and economic life? The answer would appear to be that values are used as grounds for defining political or economic goals but they are not, in themselves, a final objective. The development of values over the last 20 years or more has ridden on their moral ideals, but they are only now

beginning to be employed to improve social and cultural responsibilities, even as lip service continues to be paid to these intentions. A DVD of this conference will be available shortly.

GGSB China From Amy Xu, China Overseas Manager

GGSB attended Campus France Nanjing Office event

On April 22, GGSB China Office manager Amy J. XU was invited to attend the CampusFrance Nanjing Office event. The event was held at the campus of Hohai University, the first institution of higher education in China focusing on a wide array of engineering subjects, water resources in particular. Together with other representatives from Emlyon, Audencia Nante and Euromed Marseille Ecole de Management, we gave a seminar of Introduction of French Business school, the education system and feature programs of each school. Because of the engineering background of Hohai University, some students are very interested in the innovation management features of Grenoble Ecole de Management. Amy introduced them the great version of GIANT, the MSc Innovation Strategy and

Entrepreneurship program etc. During the open question period, students actively asked about the internship opportunities, program recruitment criteria of GGSB. After the seminar, the journalist from the World Learner program of Jiangsu TV Station International Channel interviewed school representatives. The interview was focused on the career plan before studying abroad, which is a very important concept for students and their parents to think about.
