NOZZLE DESIGN & SELECTION

Nozzle Efficiencies-What to Look For Nozzle design and selection is similar to picking an automobile. The buyer's choices are endless, but the buyer must make certain decisions: what style, performance characteristics, etc. Every car will move the buyer from point A to point B, just as every nozzle will clean sewer lines in some fashion. The question remains, "in what style and at what price” does the buyer wish to travel or clean. The "nozzle-educated" buyer must choose between different types of nozzles to determine first cost, performance characteristics, and life cycle costs that fit the budget and match the scope of the job being undertaken. KEG is ready to assist the buyer in making those decisions.

Tier One, Tier Two and Tier Three Nozzles The National Association of Sewer Service Companies (NASSCO*) divides sewer cleaning nozzles into three categories (see NASSCO Jetting Code of Practice or visit NASSCO's website on-line at www.nassco.org). Each category has its design and performance characteristics. KEG's 2009 Product Catalog utilizes the NASSCO designations to assist our customers in making informed buying decisions. Tier One Nozzles or cleaning tools that have a drilled orifice for creating pressure and have a flat inner surface for receiving and /or redirecting water flow to the orifices are Tier One. The flat inner surface is not efficient from a fluid mechanics perspective. Tier One nozzles are the least expensive to purchase, but also provide lesser performance than the other strata of nozzles. A buyer of Tier one nozzles would be driven by first cost, not product performance or longevity. Tier Two Nozzles or cleaning tools that have a replaceable threaded insert or a more rounded inner surface for water redirection are Tier Two. Tier Two nozzles provide a longer service life due to the replaceable threaded inserts provided, and often have better fluid mechanics than Tier One. A buyer of Tier Two nozzles would be driven by greater concern for performance and longer service life of the equipment. Tier Three Nozzles that have a replaceable threaded insert and a more rounded, higher efficiency inner surface for water redirection are Tier Three. A buyer of Tier Three nozzles would be driven by total owning costs (performance, durability) rather than first cost.

NOZZLE PERFORMANCE AND USAGE

Variables of Nozzle Performance In selecting a cleaning tool for a specific job, and to operate the tool on a specific jetter or sewer combination truck, the operator must know the variables of flow: • pump –flow rate in gpm • pressure in psi • hose diameter in inches, • hose length in feet and • type of hose - thermoplastic or rubber. All of these variables interact to affect the performance of a sewer cleaning tool. Improper use and alignment of these variables will not allow the tool to perform correctly or will adversely affect the operator's ability to accomplish his/her job. KEG has developed in-house proprietary software to assist our customers in configuring their equipment for optimum cleaning performance. Contact your KEG Territory Manager for more information on these important nozzle configuration issues.

Flow Rate Versus Pressure Flow (measured in gpm) is a vital component of the cleaning process. Generally, lower flows as generated by a pump are used to clean smaller diameter pipes, and flow in GPM typically increases as the diameter of pipe increases. Conversely, pressures generated by the tool (measured in psi) are usually higher when cleaning smaller diameter pipes, and pressure in psi usually decreases as the diameter of the pipe increases. The table following shows general rules-of-thumb for flow and pressure combinations, and minimum and maximum flows per hose size*.

Diameter Pressure min. flow max. flow

0.50" hose 4000 psi > 12 gpm <= 25 gpm

0.75" hose 3000 psi > 20 gpm <= 60 gpm

1.00" hose 3000 psi > 30 gpm <= 80 gpm

1.25" hose 2000 psi > 50 gpm <= 125 gpm

1.50" hose 2000 psi > 60 gpm <= 180 gpm

*These flows and pressure ranges are recommendations only, not absolutes.

Length & Type of Hose A final word on configuration includes careful selection of hose. Plastic or rubber hose will have different weights per foot and friction coefficients. As the table above suggests, hose of a certain diameter has a finite range of efficient operation. Failure to follow these guidelines may result in significant pressure losses at the nozzle or cleaning tool. KEG can assist you and train your operators in the correct selection of tools for your particular equipment configurations.

Asset and Resource Management in Public Infrastructure Maintenance and Rehabilitation – An Essay on Sewer Maintenance Tool Selection

Maintenance and rehabilitation of sewer infrastructure is an expensive proposition. Rising costs of fleet operations, maintenance and replacement of equipment and diminishing budget dollars and tax revenues create daily challenges for operator and department manager alike. In these challenging economic times, managers need options to make their resources go farther and do more. Highly efficient sewer maintenance project goals through efficient usage of scarce water, fuel and human resources.

In today’s nozzle market, some vendors will claim that their products “provide more thrust” than the competition. Others will claim that they have a nozzle that won’t blow toilets simply because the jet angles are set at the “proper angle”. Finally, there are those who claim that if a nozzle runs at a reduced flow rate (gpm), it will not have enough horsepower to properly clean a line. The discerning buyer should understand that thrust, jet angles, insert design, horsepower, fluid mechanic, operation psi and input gpm all have a part to play in nozzle performance. No single component is the most important factor when picking a nozzle or a nozzle set. The same discerning buyer should also consider fuel budgets, water availability and -cost, and the life cycle costs of owning and operating their water jetting systems when picking cleaning tools.

In fluid dynamics, Bernoulli’s principle states that an increase in the speed of a fluid (e.g. water) occurs simultaneously with a decrease in pressure or a decrease in the fluids potential energy. This is also the underlying principle that explains why a pressure differential is needed to create flow in a conduit, from gravity flow to power induced flow. Bernoulli also explains the interplay of conduit length and size to potential (pressure) realized, and why greater flow (in gpm) requires a greater pressure differential than lower flows (in gpm).

Many components affect the end potential energy of the fluid (e.g. water). These include:

THRUST Defined in nozzle science as the forward directed movement of a body (nozzle) as the result of the rewarded directed ejection of water.

HORSEPOWER The rate at which work is done and can be expressed in a variety of units (foot pounds, watts, etc).

gpm (gallons per minute) A unit of volumetric flow rate.

psi (pounds per square inch) The pressure resulting from a force of one pound-force applied to an area of one square inch.

Conduit (or hose) diameter and length Also effects the performance potential of fluids. Larger diameter conduits exhibit lower pressure losses per foot than smaller conduits under the same flow rate. Further, shorter conduit lengths contribute less to overall performance loss than longer conduits (i.e. pressure loss increases and vice versa)

Friction coefficients The flow resistance of a particular material also contributes to potential power of fluids. In sewer applications, thermoplastic hose has a lower (more efficient) friction coefficient than rubber hose (less efficient), and a curved inner surface in a nozzle body causes less friction and turbulence than a square or flattened inner surface.

All these variables affect how a jetter truck or trailer unit performs and what the costs are to clean a foot of pipe (both in the immediate costs of fuel, water and man-hours; and in long term costs of pump maintenance, repair and replacement.

KEG, in conjunction with several European testing agencies1 have determined the effectiveness of cleaning nozzles through bench testing. Tests have shown that at a predetermined distance from the nozzle, jet power can be measured at a given flow rate and pressure. Higher nozzle power is attained when the spray pattern of a nozzle’s water jet has a tighter pattern maintained over a longer distance. When the spray pattern degrades or begins to turn into a mist (atomization), the power of a water jet under the same flow rate and pressure is significant lower. Atomization causes cleaning performance to decrease sharply; high air flow velocities and more water vapor can develop in the line under these conditions also (and contribute to the problems listed below). If the water stream remains compact over longer distances (as the result of a highly efficient nozzle body design incorporating excellent flow mechanics and superior insert design), larger nominal widths can be cleaned more effectively; also the thrust effect is significantly improved.

Many “spectacular incidents” can occur with the general public due to high air flow velocities generated by a nozzle during the cleaning process. For example, when excess water volume and air flow (think of putting 1.5 gallons of milk in a 1.0 gallon plastic jug) are induced into a particular diameter of pipe (jet angles have no effect in this case) residential piping toilets can be damaged or a backflow of material into the home or business can occur (the dreaded “blown toilet”). Other factors contributing to these unpleasant backups can include improper sizing in a home’s ventilation stack (too small allowing too little air pressure differential), line and grade irregularities (swales and “sinks” that retain water and debris slugs that are forced up the service lateral to the home during high air and water flow conditions) and the grade on which the pipe conduit is laid (shallower grades being more susceptible to problems than steeper grades in most cases. The power of a nozzle’s jets is divided into cleaning and thrust components (as illustrated below). The schematic also shows that a gain in the propulsion or thrust component takes place at the expense of the cleaning component and vice versa. Wide jet angles increase the cleaning performance at the expense of the thrust effect. Narrow jet angles result in very high thrust at the expense of the cleaning effect. Since nozzles are usually deployed for certain nominal pipe diameters, almost all the modern nozzles feature several different jet angles that affect cleaning and thrust capabilities by pipe diameter.

Thrust in foot pounds can be expressed mathematically as

T = gpm x √psi 18,92

Page 9: ggggggggggg ggggggggg gggggggggg gggg ggggggggggg ... · GmbH, headquartered in Limbach-Oberfrohna, Germany. KEG serves the United States market from its distribution center in Spartanburg,

8 www.kegtechnologies.net

It should also be noted by the operator: Lower efficiency nozzle require more gpm to create thrust than higher efficiency nozzles, e.g. Tier One requires more than Tier Two and Tier Two requires more gpm than Tier Three

The potential thrust of a nozzle increases with the amount of gpm pumped to the nozzle

The potential thrust of a nozzle decreases as psi increases (and gpm decreases)

Thrust potential increases at a slower rate with increased gpm, than thrust potential decreases with a psi increase

2 The operator should consult their jetter or pump manufacturer for more information on HP output, HP-fuel curves, etc. These illustrations are provided for general discussion purposes only. 3 Engine or drive horsepower is calculated by (gpm x psi)/1542 as per Myers Aplex Industrial Reciprocating Pumps, Ashland, Ohio. These illustrations should be typical of most positive displacement water pumps used in the marketplace.

Horsepower can be expressed mathematically as:

HP = gpm x psi 1714 Horsepower is also potential work2, and can be further separated between theoretical horsepower supplied by the pump or engine and theoretical horsepower available at the end of the hose. Also, the relative efficiency of the nozzle attached to the hose further degrades (more in Tier One and less in Tier Three nozzles) the amount of work that can be done by the water system. From the table following, the operator should also note several other dynamics including:

At 80 gpm, over 100 HP3 is typically required of an engine to deliver 62 HP at the end of the hose; if a Tier One nozzle is used, the actual HP drops to 18 HP; if the operator chooses a KEG Tier Three nozzle in this scenario, the actual HP increases to nearly 50 HP.

At 60 gpm, HP required of an engine declines sharply (as would fuel consumption), yet the HP at the nozzle with a KEG Tier Three would only drop to 45 HP

Even when the flow is reduced to 45 gpm, a Tier Three nozzle still delivers 38 theoretical HP from the nozzle

In conclusion, the jetter operator or sewer authority manager should evaluate the total requirements and characteristics of their collection or storm water systems when selecting sewer cleaning tools. Flows, pressures, horsepower needs and thrust requirements are all important factors. Also, resources available (water, fuel, manpower, equipment and budget dollars) always come into play.

The discerning buyer should weight all these components, and then make informed equipment selections for infrastructure maintenance based on their systems needs.

KEG nozzles for Penetrating the toughest clogs and obstructions

When the toughest clogs and obstructions are encountered in a sewer line, KEG recommends any of our high performance penetrating nozzles for the task at hand. For total blockages caused by roots, grease or other impediments to flow, choose our Triple Edge Quattro or Drill Point Quattro Nozzles. Or in ¾”, 1” and 1 ¼” applications, our Rambo Nozzle (pictured at right) combines the performance of both the Triple Edge Quattro and Drill Point Quattro nozzles into a merciless pipe cleaning dynamo.

PENETRATING NOZZLE FAMILY

Rambo Nozzle Triple Edge Quattro nozzle

The Triple Edge Quattro nozzle is an excellent penetrating nozzle for a variety of applications. Deformed pipes, roots or other blockages inevitably yield to this high performance nozzle. The combination of four forward jets and sharp edges of the Triple Edge Quattro make it an ideal selection for total blockage removal. Triple Edge Quattro nozzles are available in multiple configurations suitable for ¼” hose connections cleaning 4” lines to 1 ¼” hose connections cleaning 12” and larger lines. The Triple Edge Quattro nozzle can be configured with standard steel or titanium ceramic inserts. KEG’s Triple Edge Quattro nozzle is classified as a Tier One or Tier Two nozzle depending on the size and the availability of replaceable inserts.

Drill Point Quattro nozzle-for total line blockages

The Drill Point Quattro is a terrific tool for removing total line blockages. The stainless steel drill tip penetrates the toughest clogs, particularly grease blockages. The 3 jets pre-drilled in the changeable tip then enlarge the opening in the clog, working with the sharp, tapered edges of the Drill Point Quattro. The loosened debris is then washed down the line by the propulsion jets at the back of the Drill Point Quattro. For low maintenance, high performance penetrating nozzle, the Drill Point Quattro is hard to beat. The Drill Point Quattro is classified as a Tier One or Tier Two nozzle depending on the size and the availability of replaceable inserts.

Drill Point Quattro nozzles

Rambo Nozzles – Three nozzles in One

The Rambo Nozzle shares its name with a very “dangerous” warrior of the big screen. However, even the famous movie hero would be hard pressed to emulate the success this nozzle has in removing its “enemies”. The Rambo nozzle combines the best characteristics of all penetrating nozzles into a maximum performance, maximum clog busting nozzle. The three jet drill point penetrates the toughest obstructions. Then the forward jets work to open the clog even farther. Finally the sharp edges of the Rambo nozzle are propelled through the clog, breaking the obstruction open and forcing the debris down the pipe line for removal by the rear thrusting jets. Available in ¾”, 1” and 1 ¼” hose threads, the Rambo nozzle can be configured with steel or titanium ceramic inserts. The Rambo is classified as a Tier Two Nozzle.

For larger sewer cleaning power, our Torpedo nozzle or Royal nozzle performs the toughest cleaning jobs.

Standard Nozzle Ball Nozzle

Ball and Standard nozzles

Ball and Standard Nozzles (pictured above) are KEG’s Tier One nozzles that come with factory drilled orifices. For small, residential applications, these nozzles are typically used. Ball and Standard nozzles have a one year warranty. KEG’s Ball nozzles are suitable for 1” to 6” pipes, and fit a 3/8”, 1/4” or 1/2” hose. Standard nozzles fit 1/4” to 1 1/4” hoses and will work effectively in 2” to 12” lines.

Forward jet nozzle Available in 1/2” configurations, the Forward Jet (pictured at right) has seven inserts. All water is pushed forward out of the nozzle, toward the clog or obstruction, and away from the home. Available in 15GPM, 20 GPM, or 30 GPM configurations. Technique for using the Forward Jet: The operator should feed the hose into the service lateral by hand, activate the jetter, then force the clog toward the sewer main. When the forward jet returns to the cleanout, shut down the water; repeat the process until the service lateral is clear.

FLOOR CLEANER FAMLIY

KEG-Patented Fluid Mechanics Design “Jets” Away Debris

KEG’s 5 to 14 jet floor cleaners, utilizing KEG’s patented fluid mechanics, provide truly superior cleaning efficiency in large diameter pipes. Superior to other bottom nozzles in both fluid mechanics and jet angle design, our floor cleaners put the pump’s power on the floor of larger diameter pipes - where the debris is!

Superior Design Equals Superior Performance

Due to optimum fluid mechanics, the flow from the high pressure water hose is converted to maximum cleaning power from each jet. The resulting flow from the various jets (aided by multiple angles of incidence for the jets) makes these floor cleaners ideal for removing sludge, mud, and other compacted materials and heavy debris (rocks, bricks, broken concrete, etc.) from storm lines, detention systems, culverts, and large sanitary lines. KEG’s unique roll cage (see the 8 jet pictured at right) design also ensures that our floor jet cleaner will return to its upright position to perform as designed. KEG’s Floor Cleaners feature our patented fluid mechanics and are Tier Three nozzles.

Advantages:

In our continuing effort to bring new and sophisticated cleaning techniques to the storm and sewer cleaning markets, KEG is pleased to introduce the “Twin Six” and “Twin Eight” floor cleaning products. The “twins” are more of a new technique than a new product. Utilizing two six jet floor cleaners or two eight jet floor cleaners working in tandem (both with KEG patented fluid mechanics), plus a Y - connector and other fittings, the twins offer the contractor or municipality crew the ability to clean large box culverts, arch pipe, or large diameter round pipes in a more efficient manner. The twin units run parallel in a large diameter pipe. By using spacer bars and dual water feed lines, the twin units provide a uniform cleaning pattern over a wide diameter. With the addition of optional angle adapters, an even wider pattern of water can be created. The twins can be feed from one or multiple trucks, so the cleaning can continue over a longer period than conventional systems. For more information on the “twin” concept, contact us.

KLEEN VUE SYSTEM Cleaning Capability and Video Inspection in One Unit KEG’s goal is to provide the absolute best sewer cleaning equipment for our customers. The KLEEN-VUE SYSTEM offers our customers the unparalleled ability to clean a sewer or storm line and record and watch the process as it happens. This one-of-a-kind patented product provides the operator immediate visual feedback on pipe conditions as they are cleaned, saving time, water, and fuel. Utilizing the Kleen-Vue System, contractors or municipalities will be able to clean more footage, provide documentation as needed, and maximize the effectiveness of traditional camera and video systems.

Wireless Technology Equals Superior Results

Because the camera system is totally wireless, the KEG KLEEN-VUE unit can clean sewer lines, video inspect them, and provide a video and audio recording for documentation, ALL AT THE SAME TIME! Two cameras are factory installed in the base of the unit providing forward and rear views of the unit as it cleans the line. The third component is the video receiver, mounted at the man-hole to receive the images and forward these signals up to the monitor at the operator’s station. The recording system then makes video records of the cleaning process.

FINISHING NOZZLE FAMILY

KEG’s Rotor Nozzle Provides the Finishing Touch

When contractors or municipalities "finish" a pipe cleaning job, they often view "streaks" on the pipe walls during their video inspection. These "streaks" are actually grease residue that has not been removed by the other cleaning processes. KEG offers our Rotor Nozzle for this purpose. The free spinning Rotor will remove those last grease deposits, along with tender roots and other vegetation, to "ensure perfect pipe cleaning and a finished job", hence our finishing label.

Rotor Nozzles - A 360° Maintenance Tool Rotor nozzles run the gamut of pipe size applications, ranging from 1/4" to 1 1/4" hose threads, and from 4" to 18“ pipe. The unique nozzle insert configuration provides both propulsion and a rotating body action. This rotation ensures that pipes are thoroughly cleaned in all 360° of the pipe surface. Though primarily intended for grease removal, the Rotor Nozzle is equally adept at removing scaling, crusts, and small root tendrils and other tender vegetation. Maintenance simply requires removal of the top cap and cleaning of the rotational shaft; this can be done in a matter of minutes. No bearings to oil or lubricate and no repair kits to install! Remember, the Rotor Nozzle should be the last nozzle up the pipe before TV inspection! KEG's Rotor Nozzles are available with steel or titanium ceramic inserts. Our Rotors are classified as Tier Two nozzles.

ROTOR NOZZLES To Ensure Perfect Pipe Cleaning Before Inspection

KEG’s Rotor Nozzles are an excellent tool for complete pipe cleaning. It should be noted, however, that a Rotor is NOT a cleaning nozzle and should not be used in cleaning applications. Rotors are intended to remove the grease and sludge that remain in lines after an 80 percent cleaning has been accomplished. These lines are the adhesive for the next clog to begin. KEG Rotor Nozzles are made with our unique water driven design and require no form of lubrication for maintenance and operation. KEG Rotor Nozzles are Tier Two nozzles.

DUCE NOZZLES vibration action removes scaling and deposits

The Duce is KEG’s vibrating rotational nozzle. Using the same water driven rotation as our conventional Rotor Nozzles, the Duce literally vibrates pipe deposits away. The Duce has sprocket-like front and rear end caps that use the vibrating action in the pipeline to break up hard scale and deposits. The Duce is ideal for removing grout and mortar residue, scaling, tuberculation or other deposits that have hardened to the pipe wall or floor. The operator should be careful to determine the overall condition of the pipe via a camera inspection before using the nozzle. Do not use the Duce in pipes that display cracks, fissures or other damage! The Duce is available with titanium ceramic inserts.

CHAIN CUTTER FAMILY

KEG Root Cutters For Roots and Scaling Removal KEG offers five models for customers with root infiltration or grease and scaling problems. Beginning with the Micro Chain Cutter in 2" to 4" applications, Mini Chain Cutter in 4" to 10" applications, the Super Cutter Plus 150 for 6" to 24“ pipes, the Super Cutter Plus 200 for pipes 8" to 48", and finally the Supernova Chain Cutter WOW! For 6” to 48” pipe all with one Cutter, can you believe it! Let us show you with a demonstration. KEG's family of chain cutters has the flexibility to handle the removal of the heaviest obstructions.

Mini Cutter Cutter SCP 150 Cutter Supernova

Superior Performance and Flexibility of Application

KEG's chain cutters are made of stainless steel and offer superior thrust and drive efficiency. Stabilized by stainless steel guide carriage skids, the cutters feature a unique spinner nozzle design that rotates the main shaft, spinning the attached chains at 2,500 RPM. The cross cutter bit installed on the front of the shaft also serves as a penetrating bit to "bore" into the root or obstruction. Chains can be configured for grease or scale removal, or for root removal.

Ease of Configuration

The ease of field configuration is a definite plus for the operator. Installation of replacement chain, or skid configuration for larger diameters, is a simple matter and is quickly done in the field. Standard maintenance and cleaning is easy and prolongs the service life of the cutter. KEG Chain Cutters also feature a 2 year limited warranty and come configured with titanium ceramic inserts for better performance. Finally, no lubrication (other than the HP Swivel joint at the hose connection) is required to operate a KEG Chain Cutter.

Always clean and video before operating any chain cutter. Also, follow operating guidelines in KEG chain cutter manual.

Kit Nomenclature – What the Model Numbers Mean Kits are defined as a grouping of nozzles by application that gives the operator a selection of nozzle groupings. To make things easier for our customers, our Kit offerings will have some “logic” built into the model numbers. All kits will be defined with the following elements:

KIT + DIAMETER + NOZZLES

KIT-1.0-COMP

KIT-0.75-SANI

Kits are available with ceramic inserts only.
